What do you think? I can clearly understand why looking at that report.

That really does take the pee then. It's profiteering out of the ultimate fear any parent has - and actual lives. It really is about time we stopped being so passive about all this bullshit - and call me cyniocal, but I don't think Jeremy Vile will save anyone when he's in the same business as 'da man' - for want of a better phrase

MrsAki · 26/06/2008 21:07

This, monkeytrousers, is what really makes me mad as well. Britax for instance will tell Swedish parents on their Swedish website that RF is safer and children should RF till 4 years old, and that BRitax knows this as they are so advanced and carry out their own tests etc. Then on the British website they say nothing of the sort. What happened there to their advanced testing and care for children? Should we then conclude that they care about Swedish children and not British ones? It makes me so angry I want to ... grrrrrr!

Pixiepants · 26/06/2008 21:07

Not sure what you mean Monkeytrs? Really interested to hear your idea's about not being passive about this bs...

MissHH · 26/06/2008 21:13

Can someone fill me in on this Jermy Vile person?

OP posts:
Pixiepants · 26/06/2008 21:18

He's a DJ called Jemery 'Vine' . Hosts a lunchtime 'debating' show where listeners can call in with their opinions after the for and against have had their say.It's....no I'm not going there....

Pixiepants · 26/06/2008 21:19

And Jeremyvile is a Mumsnetter...but I don't think they're related!

Pixiepants · 26/06/2008 21:28

And MissHH...Your 20.25pm post...you are doing the latter...just not getting paid.

MissHH · 26/06/2008 21:45

That is true and sometimes it is good not to get paid.

MrsAki · 26/06/2008 22:06

And here I was thinking that you meant that Jeremy Kyle was whiny ...

MissHH · 26/06/2008 22:11

MrsAki: Have you sent the research report to any organizations, radio or tv channels?

Surely somebody must react and want to adress this if you pull out the bit about 6 out 8 children part.

OP posts:
MissHH · 26/06/2008 22:12

6 of 8..

Media likes that kind of sad figures.

Pixiepants · 26/06/2008 22:19

I didn't get back to you before MissHH, but I've contacted BBC Bristol again with the new research. They want a 'Bristol' link to make it newsworthy? I couldn't come up with much apart from possibly being one of the two people here who have a Group 1 RF seat...a friend of mine has the isi-besafe? Might have to start another campaign group...or ask about setting up a Bristol 'division' of the Hampshire one???

MissHH · 26/06/2008 22:29

So if they find someone in Bristol then they will adress this?

It is a bit weird that the figures in this case haven't got any news value by it self(at least I think it has great value).

OP posts:
Pixiepants · 26/06/2008 22:36

I'm in Bristol To be fair the reporter I spoke to hadn't read the report when he asked for the Bristol connection so hopefully he might reconsider..

You've just given me an idea though, as I think journalists sometimes use Mumsnet for research...just off to find where they post and see if anyone would cover this for the national press....(I don't think concise and informative writing is my strong point)

Pixiepants · 26/06/2008 22:42

On second thoughts might just e-mail the editors...

cwtchy · 26/06/2008 22:47

I wonder if you need to secure everything in the boot if you use a RF carseat? I've got the Britax First class, so DD is rear facing until 18kgs. It has just occurred to me that with a hatchback full of shopping, this could actually be more dangerous than a FF seat.

MrsAki · 26/06/2008 22:52

I have emailed the report to Which? Magazine, and to BBC South. The authors of the report has in conjunction with ANEC send a press release to the national press about it link here so I was hoping that it would be covered but nothing yet... Pixie, you and you-know-who definitely make up the Bristol division of the Rearfacing Campaign Group. Feel free to tell them that you are members of the team. You are. There is your connection.

MrsAki · 26/06/2008 22:54

You should secure everything in the boot no matter which direction you face. Did you know that a teddy bear will hit you with a force equivalent to 15 kg if it comes flying in a collision?

MissHH · 26/06/2008 22:55

One needs to secure everything in the car all the time regardless It is dangerous for everyone in the car to have loose objects in the back.

Haven't any one seen the missiles test on Fifth Gear?

Pixiepants give them cold facts that'll give you attention.

And it is true that it is a suggestion to remove all FF car seats on the market over a timeperiode of five years(meaning that when the five years have ended there should just be RF seats for small children on the market So one can write that they want to take dangerous seats out of the market.

MissHH, do neither of us ever sleep?

I wonder why men are so hard to convince? I had a bit of the same problem, but know everyone in the family have been educated about RF and seen crashtest, so they are all so understanding about us having DS RF.

MrsAki: No, how can we sleep when we got to do missionary work?

OP posts:
Twinklemegan · 26/06/2008 23:45

Let's not forget that the the most dangerous item inside any car is quite often the driver.

Pixiepants · 27/06/2008 09:02

Good Luck Sprogger. Seems that many people view going FF as a developmental milestone, like crawling and walking. It takes a long long time to re-educate but I guess we have to start somewhere.

And Twinklemegan, your post shows another good reason to support RF. We all think we're safe drivers, but we're all human. Hardly a journey goes by when we don't see someone doing something dangerous behind the wheel. I guess the safest option is not to use the roads at all but thats just not realistic so this is the next best thing.

CJMommy · 27/06/2008 10:52

Could I just say 'thank you' to all who have brought this issue to my attention. I'd never heard of RF seats being used after the infant carriers and DH and I were innocently looking forward to the day when DS could go ff so he could 'see where he was going'. I have followed these threads on RF seats for the last few weeks and will now be looking to purchase a RF seat in the next few months (DS 5 months old). Although money is not in huge supply, safety is the main issue here............
I was recently told that a girl I used to work with was in a car accident and her 4 yr old DS was in the back in his FF seat. She drove into the back of a parked vehicle, not going very fast. Her DS is now paralysed from the neck down. I heard this before I knew anything about RF seats and now that I do know, as someone said earlier in this thread, 'it's a no brainer'.
