Ex wife needs payslip for benefits?

Loukey · 11/01/2026 10:40

My ex wife has asked for a copy of my payslip every March since we divorced 6 years ago. She claims there’s a benefits form she completes (we have 2 kids which she claims child benefit for and I give her child maintenance), and the form needs my payslip to calculate the minimum amount I should pay her and for her to confirm she’s happy with it and receives it.
I can’t find information on any benefits or tax form which requires this - does anyone else have any idea?
I pay the maintenance by standing order and she’s never complained about the payment. The issue is arising as I’m now self employed so won’t have a payslip to give her, so if it’s so important on the form, I don’t know that she can complete it?
just confused and looking for any knowledge or advice on what the form is she needs my employment details for

There's no form that I'm aware of.

Cm doesn't count towards income for benefits therefore anything that you pay is separate to her claiming. She certainly wouldn't have to advise that she's happy with the amount to anyone (wtf!)

Is she using it just to check you're paying the correct amount of cm? This could be equally checked by you giving her the figure verbally.

She's checking to see what you earn!

Anewuser · 11/01/2026 11:13

Your ex wife has been lying to you. Most separated couples do not provide payslips to each other.

She doesn’t need your details for her benefit claim.

Spirallingdownwards · 11/01/2026 11:15

She does not need this for any official purpose.

She is merely checking that the child maintenance you are paying is in line with what she woukd get were she to claim by CMS. Crafty mare! But I understand why she may have done it and continue to do so when you hear of how some partners try to get away with paying less than they should.

AgnesMcDoo · 11/01/2026 11:17

She’s telling porkies

shouldofgotamortage · 11/01/2026 11:28

She’s telling porkies, she just wants to know how much you earn. Stop showing her them!

titchy · 11/01/2026 11:31

Why is she a crafty mare? Plenty of fathers lie to their ex about how much they earn in order to reduce their maintenance. It’s perfectly sensible of her to ensure you’re making the correct payments.

Will you be paying yourself a tiny salary now that you’re SE? So reducing how much you’re required to pay? How about reassuring her that the amount you pay will not decrease regardless of how much you pay yourself.

Lightuptheroom · 11/01/2026 11:35

She doesn't need it for anything official, she's simply checking what you're earning and what you should be paying in maintenance. There are exes who will seek to hide income in order to pay the minimum (not suggesting this is you) so she is protecting herself.

Why ate you being snide in your second paragraph and speaking to the op like they've done something wrong? Weird tone.

Fiftyandme · 11/01/2026 11:38

She’s lying.

ilikeeggs · 11/01/2026 11:39

She doesn’t need your payslip but needs to know how much you earn to work out how much you need to pay using the online calculator.

GAJLY · 11/01/2026 11:39

She just wants proof that you’re not lying. Your wages can change over the years, according to promotion and cost of living rises. She’s making she she gets the correct figure and you pay the appropriate amount of maintenance.

She's being crafty because she's lying to get the information. There's nothing wrong with her wanting to check she's receiving the correct amount, but lying to do so isn't a good look, is it?

MildlyAnnoyed · 11/01/2026 11:42

Child maintenance has access to your income so they calculate the amount you pay. If you have an informal arrangement & don’t go through CMS she’s just checking whether she’s getting what she’s entitled to if she did go through CMS. You don’t need to provide her this information.

OriginalUsername2 · 11/01/2026 11:42

Lots of men go self employed to get out of paying full maintenance. I think she’s trying to check you’re not earning any extras you haven’t told her about. Like others have said, there is no such form and your maintenance payment is excluded when they decide on benefit payments.

This. So you can always check it yourself in the CMS calculator and adjust accordingly.

Does she have reason to not trust you on this matter?

caringcarer · 11/01/2026 11:45

Sounds like you have a good relationship with exw. Don't spoil it by having a go about her not needing pay slip. Just reassure her you'll still be paying money to help bring up kids and you'll keep that good relationship going forward.

Anonanonanonagain · 11/01/2026 11:46

She asks only once a year for it so shes clearly checking to see if you get paid more than the year before. Tell her no from now on as it is none of her concern and if she has issues to go through the proper legal channels.

patooties · 11/01/2026 12:06

This is wild. Go sisterhood. Punch down all you can ladies - cos no man ever lied about their income to avoid paying. Wonder why she felt she had to lie ?

DumpedByText · 11/01/2026 12:33

I don't get CM anymore but I never had sight of my ex's payslip.

She's having you on so she can check how much you earn.

If CM wanted to know, they'd ask you. Tell her no and that CM can contact you if they need it!

Simply because some men lie about their income to avoid CMS does not make it right for this woman to lie and demand documents that she has no legal right to, to make sure this one doesn't.

Usernamenotfound1 · 11/01/2026 13:06

She didn’t need to lie to o/p.

she could have just asked. If o/p refused take it to the CMS and let them deal with it.

I’m just astonished at the ‘siding’ with this random guy - who’s come to ask a bunch of mums to slag off his ex.

again - I wonder why she felt she needed to lie to find out his earnings to make sure she was getting what she is due (not a penny more not a penny less obviously).

Not siding with him. Don’t know the background.

bottom line is she didn’t need to lie to him to get his payslip. She could have just gone to CMS if she felt the amount wasn’t correct.

if she thinks he’s lying to her about his income why come down to his level and lie about why she needs proof. Both as bad as each other.

Probably a MN user who has fallen for the doctrine that all men are abusive liars. Some of the advice I have seen on here over the years telling women to break laws, it would not surprise me in the least bit if someone had recommended this tactic.
