dd is my first and she has a dummy day and night... i take it away if she's happy, but she is just learning to put it in and take it out herself, and the nightly 1am scream for it is starting to annoy me! i might have to go with you all on this one and ditch it!

well not that it matters but I don't think you are cruel either. Was more labouring the point that if the crying was torture you could cave

I gave a dummy to ds from very early and am glad I did cos it seem to help him (and me!) be quite calm. Decided to take it away at about 4/5 months cos had to plug him up several times a night and didn't want to be doing that for the next few months. Had a couple of bad days and a few whingy days but he soon forgot about it and started to sleep through night (when not ill/teething but that's another story).

Fwiw he did not then resort to his thumb but I did give him a 'cuski' as a comforter which seemed to work quite well.

Good luck!

I did the same as you Yurtgirl as I was so tired of having to find DS's dummy 4 times a night. It took about 1 week of screaming hissy fits and now he goes to sleep quite happily with his fluffy bunny or something soft. I have 4 little cuddly toys scattered strategically in each corner of the cot so he can at least find one

I know it's hard but stick with it, you'll be so glad that you did.

Still asleep yurtgirl?

aloha · 23/01/2005 23:21

My ds only slept through for the first time at 8months - with his dummy. He was a rubbish sleeper but it was nothing to do with his dummy. Why did I give him one - well my mum did actually - and he was a much happier child. He has always had an enormously strong need to suck. In fact, his sucking reflex hasn't gone away at all - he sucks his sleeve these days by day (aged 3).
Different children have different needs, and I do think it helps to remember that.
It's not cruel not to use a dummy, nor is it wrong to use one.

How did it go last night?

lunavix · 24/01/2005 09:48

THe only thing I will say to this is by the time your dd reaches 9 months, she should be able to find her dummy herself... ds still has his (9 months) but then he sleeps through the night, and doesn't notice if it's fallen out/puts it back in if he does. But I admire you for choosing to do it now! I'm going to wait till his first few teeth are through (only just started this month) and he's walking, then cut it down.

WestCountryLass · 24/01/2005 13:35

Exactly Aloha and many children do have a need to suck until they are pre-schoolers as although the rooting reflex starts to diminish at 3-4 months, the sucking one can remain for a good few years.

My DS has no dummy now but if he gets upset he sucks his sleeves and he is nearly 3.5.

We are going through this at the moment too (in fact, I am listening to ds2 scream in his bed right now). He is 7.5 months and I too was sick of getting up in the night a hundren times to put it back in again. His quality of sleep was very poor as a result. My ds1 found his thumb at 9 weeks old and was an excellent sleeper. Ds2 will not suck his thumb. I have nothing against a dummy - and if he could pick it up and put it in himself, then he could keep it. But as he can't, I ditched them last night. The night wasn't so bad, by the daytime sleeps today have been hell. Hopefully this won't last forever, or my neighbours may end up reporting me to SS!
