Ooooh - well done you. My two dds were never interested in dummies at all. If I was in your situation I would persevere. It's gonna be a long, hard journey but you'll get there. Good luck. x

yurtgirl, do you really want to do that? Fine if you do but 8mos is youngish to give it up. If it's a comfort why can't she have it? Up to you of course! My dd still has hers at 13mos although only for sleeping.

Personally I'd live with the dummy a little bit longer to lose the screaming!

Pinkdiamond, my ds had his until he was about 3, I really wouldn't worry! And by then it was just for sleep/comfort if he hurt himself. He doesn't have it now and he's 7.

I must say I thought 8 months seemed a funny age to stop. I was going to tell you about a friend of mine but at 8 months it wouldn't work anyway. She managed to get her dd to stop dummies by telling her to leave it under the christmas tree on christmas eve and Santa would swap it for a very special present. She also told her that Santa was collecting the old dummies from the "big" children to give to the tiny little babies. It worked but she was much older than your little one.

I stopped dummy at eight months with DS3. It burst so I decided not to replace it. He got over it in a couple of days.

Our ds1 and Ds2 had a dummy until waaaaay after 8 months, probably more like 2.5 yrs.

I admire you for have the courage to chuck them at 8 months. Hope it goes well tonight.

I got rid of it because it was a hassle when he lost it. My other babies had their thumbs and I would have preferred him to find his. He never did but he slep through the night once the dummy was ditched.

My Ds was 3 when we encouraged him to part with them. He wanted a party on a train for his birthday so we told him he could but big boys who have parties on trains don't have dummies so he would need to give his to the train driver for the babies. This worked for us because DS is train mad and he really wanted that party!!!!!

I am not sure I could take the dummies away at 8 months if they were relied upon for comfort. I have read that some babies/infants have the sucking reflex til they are 3 and I am sorry but I am a bit of a 'anything for a quiet life' kind of parent within reason

I think some children do need that extra bit of comfort.Is there any reason you want to stop the dummy?If it is that it falls out i heard about someone who used to surround their child with them in the bed.My son has his when he feels abit poorly and he is 5.I don't see the prob really.Same with toilet training.ds was abit "behind"everyone else but i did not force the issue,then suddenly he was dry day and night from about 3years and 11 months old.Relax.
