shhhhhhhh the neighbours might hear

weightwatchingwaterwitch · 21/01/2005 11:40

ha ha at this thread. I don't care how many new threads are started even if it's been discussed before, does it matter? I do put links if I know of an old thread and feel grateful if people do the same to me if I start a thread. But sometimes it's good to start a discussion again to get new people's view on it.

Just for badness!! ..........joking
Politeness duly noted Cod - and on re-reading the title, you asked very politely..
Have never thought to use the archived threads for that reason, but anytime I've tried to use them I've drawn a blank - must either be very dim and doing it wrongly. Will try harder or ask nicely for someone to point me in the right direction like JanH (Queen of links and searches).
I do feel though that it is nice to 'chat' in the here and now with poeple who may be going through the same problems or whatever. Have to say I agree with Hula - people should post what they need or want to and links from those who are good would be most helpful rather than re-posting the same info for the umpteenth time.

I also think that views and opinions change from time to time. New mumsnetters have different experiences that they can share. I do search if it's something specific but sometimes don't have the time to trawl through all the posts to get the answer I need.

Aero · 21/01/2005 12:08

I'm not sure how to take that Beety- I haven't posted anything on here up until now, and you are a nice person as is Cod and everyone else, so please don't be cross with me. I have said I will try to use the archived search more.

Aero · 21/01/2005 12:11

Also, I did say I was joking and I wanted to add my thoughts - shouldn't I have? Don't think this topic has been covered before! (lighthearted comment - not to be taken sarcastically)

nasa · 21/01/2005 12:12

I think beety misunderstood you Aero, I shouldn't worry

Aero · 21/01/2005 12:14

Thanks nasa. Am not really worried. Didn't mean to stir. Am off to add to Titania's threads!!!

Blu · 21/01/2005 12:14

and after her sterling efforts to distract this thread which was chasing it's own tail, the red icon might just have been her red out of breath face....

marthamoo · 21/01/2005 12:15

Am I allowed to post?

Even when I know there is a thread about a subject because I have posted on it in the past I sometimes can't find it. And I've been here a while.

If as a brand new poster I had asked a question and had the reply "oh we've done this already - look in archived threads" I would have left and never come back and none of you would ever have known me and had your lives enriched by my wit and loveliness

Sometimes I see a thread title and think "oh gawd, not again" and I don't post. Sometimes I think "oh gawd, not again" and I do post. Consistent, I ain't.

I think Mumsnet is great and lou is an eminently sensible moderator - and we should all chill out a bit, maaaaaan

hub2dee · 21/01/2005 12:16

Sorry to interrupt the spanking.

I'm very new to MN, but has anyone ever suggested an area for interactive messaging (live, real time, non archived) ? (for the techies some kind of little java chat window).

Yes, archived searches should be carried out, and people should be encouraged to use them, but the strength of the community is not only in the breadth (and depth) of the archived discussions, but in the relationships people create (often very quickly) with other users. Knocking them too abruptly with a 'been there, done that' probably would put some people off.

Space where you could instantly see who was online, review a handful of chat topics which are going on live could be interesting. Kind of like butting into a conversation. Perhaps questions / posts would time-out and disappear after 24 hours. An alternative to threaded discussions and highly addictive !

Anyone agree ? (ermm.... I forgot to search the archived messages on whether this has been done to death )

lou33 · 21/01/2005 12:23

hub,

live chat was talked about and has been on and off over the years. There are those who think is would be good, but the general consensus is that most netters do not want it. I cannot remember why, but these things are always worth talking to mumsnet hq about from time to time, as opinions and circumstances change.
