Either in the city or surrounding places.
Where is pleasant , good schools, any really decent suburbs?

For centralish locations, Highfield and Bitterne are nice, as are some of the streets on the south side of the Common (not sure what the area is called). If you want something more suburban, then Bassett on the outskirts is lovely. And for posh areas (which needs loads of money) you could look just outside the city in Hamble or Chilworth.

HTH.

Oh, forgot to post about schools. I only know about those in Highfield area. Highfield CoE and Portswood Primary are the local primary schools - they are the top 2 in the city. I don't think any government secondary schools are that great (but prob no worse than anywhere else), but King Edwards (private) is very good.

brimfull · 28/05/2008 20:06

Ditto-

Romsey, Otterbourne, Bassett (certain bits!)- Hollybrook Sch is good, Chilworth, Chandlers Ford (again certain bits), Highfield.

If you have a bit more to spend explore a bit further afield eg Braishfield etc

catchingzeds · 28/05/2008 20:30

North Baddesley infants has a lovely reputation too.

Have you thought about Winchester? Lots of nice areas there too. Also, Park gate, Lowford, Swanwick, Burridge etc

mypandasgotcrabs · 28/05/2008 20:33

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!

Go a little bit east so that you have a PO post code, or failing that a little west so you have a BH post code.

HonoriaGlossop · 28/05/2008 20:55

Agree that Winchester and surrounding areas are much nicer but it's hugely expensive.

Agree that places like Swanwick and Chandlers Ford are nice, I also like Locks Health and Warsash but they are a good twenty minutes drive from Southampton city centre (on a good day!)

georgiemama · 28/05/2008 20:59

I wouldn't.

Salisbury or Winchester.

My immediate thought was 'Ringwood'! But that's because that's where I grew up; it's still a lovely town and certainly the infant and senior schools there are great (not sure about Juniors as don't have any contact with that age group atm). Don't live in Southampton!

Eve34 · 28/05/2008 21:11

Chandlers ford is nice, and good school, Winchester is costly. Some part of town are nice, you need to think about your budget and what you want from the area.

Wher are all you lovely ladies when I shouted out for a get together...................

Nero · 28/05/2008 21:14

Oi - stop with the SOuthampton bashing!! It really isn't that bad. I moved down from London last year and we love it here. Ok, yes it is not that attractive a city, and you don't get top restaurants like in London, but it has everything else you need. You are close to the New Forest, and its only just over an hour to London. And most importantly property prices are not outrageous, so we have fantastic quality of life now.

(But if you're a football fan you might not want to support the local team )

brimfull · 28/05/2008 21:15

Piffling-I live in Ringwood!

Have dc in senior and infant school

Junior has a new head and has improved apparenlty.

Saying that dd went through it and came out the other end and is doing well at the senior

georgiemama · 28/05/2008 21:16

Not anywhere near there, but grew up in the area.

jetgirl · 28/05/2008 21:21

I live in Southampton - Shirley, but aspire to Upper Shirley!! Nice houses, decent primary schools nearby and close to town. I also teach in one of the secondary schools, which is challenging but a great place to work, and I teach some wonderful kids. I also support Southampton FC.

Bit [hmmm] by the Southampton bashing on here, glad someone likes it, Nero!

ChippyMinton · 28/05/2008 21:25

Highfield - apparently not that difficult to get into CoE because of high student population, not many families. And there is a Waitrose I believe

Nero · 28/05/2008 21:29

Oh yes, there is a Waitrose in Highfield. It's my local supermarket

llareggub · 28/05/2008 21:40

The most miserable years of my life were spent in Southampton. I love in Swaythling and then Portswood. I left there 13 years ago, so my opinion is completely irrelevant and unhelpful.

I'm sure my misery was caused by being the grottiest halls of residence, followed by a student house that should have been demolished. I did visit some lovely villages in and around Hampshire, so it isn't all bad.

llareggub · 28/05/2008 21:41

lived in Swaythling. I clearly did not love it!

davidtennantsmistress · 28/05/2008 21:43

no don't do it! (althou i'm PO thru n thru! lol)

hamble? (it always seemed nice when I worked there, but wouldn't know about the local schools etc - and there's a huge tescos at the top of the main road in.

HollyPutTheKettleOn · 28/05/2008 21:50

I live in St. Denys, which is great. Brilliant schools (Portswood and Highfield) just up the road and loads of young families, so there is loads going on. Also you can still buy a 3 bed semi for around £170k.

If I could afford it I would live in Highfield, it is lovely.

Also stop with the Southampton bashing, it is a great place to live and at least it's not a complete hole like a certain other nearby city.
