New Year Resolutions - what are yours and do you think you'll keep them?

Not sure what I think of New Year resolutions really. Am I more likely to stick to them at this depressing time of year than any other? Not sure so I'm keeping them short and sweet. They are:

Stop smoking. For good this time (yep, agaaain)
Stay off dairy as I've lapsed badly over Christmas
Go to yoga and stick to it this time
Cut my spending
Lose weight. I know how to do it, I just haven't. So 1,200 calories a day, more exercise, less alcohol, less olive oil.

Oooh, it all sounds grim but I'm going to make myself a chart for the wall in my office to remind myself what I want to achieve. Maybe it'll work What about everyone else? What are yours and do you think you'll keep them?

To stop shouting at my DS - hard one but I really want to try I am beginning to really hate myself and I am sure I am making ds unhappy too.

bluestar · 02/01/2003 13:05

Go to the dentist!

CookieMonster · 02/01/2003 13:07

On a serious note, to make sure dh knows I love him and appreciate him because I really have been neglecting him since dd was born (22 months now).

And on a more frivolous note, to clean the oven more often. It's in such a state at the moment that I'm going to get one of those professional companies in to do it because I can't face it! What a slob ...

SoupDragon · 02/01/2003 13:08

The only resolution I've ever made and kept is from a few years ago when I resolved not to make any more resolutions

Philippat · 02/01/2003 13:11

dh's is 'buy phil more big presents'.

star · 02/01/2003 13:45

I'm going to stop picking the skin around my finger nails,
take the car less and walk more,
spend more time playing with my DS at home rather than taking him to every Tumble Tots, Little Explorers, Mother and Toddler group under the sun,
experiment more with cooking and
learn a DIY skill (not sure what yet).

I've never set myself any New year Resolutions before so i have no idea whether I will achieve these.

Zoe · 02/01/2003 19:04

Eat five fruit and veg each day
Be positive
Get organised
De-clutter house
Gym twice a week

So far so good - it's only the 2nd though...

Lindy · 02/01/2003 19:11

Have to agree with Soupdragon, every year for the past 25++ mine has been to lose weight & exercise more............. has it ever worked...... NO!!

Happy New Year everyone, and good luck to those who have more willpower than me.

Chinchilla · 02/01/2003 19:41

To not buy any more make-up, and to start using some of the stockpile I have already amassed! To go to see Lee Evans and/or Eddie Izzard live.

WWW - you can still lose weight on 1500 cals per day, which is much less difficult! Oh yes, I want to get down to 8 st. 7 lbs. or less before my cousin's wedding in June. Currently 10 st. (sniff)

kkgirl · 02/01/2003 21:08

Mine is to lose some weight, but mainly to get fitter. I took ds and dd to The Mall today and they ran up the stairs. I huffed and puffed to the top and thought to myself my legs should be stronger than this at my age!!!!!!

SueW · 02/01/2003 21:35

Chinchilla, I have been doing that this year with make-up/potions and lotions.

My bathroom is looking much clearer. I also have a chuck out about once a month in there where I throw out something I have never really got on with. This month it was two Clinique products - eye make up remover and 7 day scrub that have sat there for years probably without being used.

willow2 · 03/01/2003 10:08

Stop smoking (day three of patches and doing ok - no lapses yet; how about you WWW or did it all come crashing down over Christmas?)
Get rid of the weight that I worked so hard to get rid of in 2001 and then put back on over last year.
Get in to the clothes that I bought with glee in 2001 and now languish in the back of the cupboard.
Get in to the gym that I pay a fortune for but haven't seen for months (are you seeing a pattern here?)
Get a publishing deal.
Get an income.
Get a life.

SimonHoward · 03/01/2003 10:32

Ladies

For all those of you wanting to loose weight please come and do my job for me.

In the 2 months since starting it I have lost over a stone in weight.

I mainly put this down to being so tired the thought of food in the evening is horrifying so it is easy to keep the calories down.

As for my new years resolutions, well I plan on winning the lottery, giving up work and convincing DW to hire me the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader squad for an interesting weekend (somehow I think the first two are so much more likely than the 3rd)

oxocube · 03/01/2003 11:19

Be more patient with the kids, clean my house more regularly, drink less, smile more, oh and go out occasionally with d.h. without children (so far, we haven't managed this since d.s.2, now 14 months, was born !!

Chinchilla · 03/01/2003 19:30

SueW - I have enough make-up to last for the rest of my life I think!

Tinker · 03/01/2003 19:33

I was going to not post on here since I never make rsolutions but, having just paid my newspaper bill of EIGHTY FOUR POUNDS, I vow to pay my bill each week!

mam · 03/01/2003 19:36

Zoe copied my list!!!

WideWebWitch · 03/01/2003 19:50

Blimey Tinker! That's a LOT of newspapers!

Try to recycle as much as possible (including sending stuff to Oxfam that we don't need/use), and cut down on waste.
Make real effort to get into reusable nappies with new baby.
Save money on groceries by shopping around more, and avoiding cooking with expensive ingredients.
Buy more fresh food locally & from the Farmers' Market instead of lining the pockets of Mr Safeway et al.

Good luck to all of you trying to give up smoking - you all have small people who want you to be around and in good health for as long as possible. (Both my parents-in-law smoke, and I can get quite upset when I think what it's doing to their life expectancy).

After years of making the same general resolutions with no success, I've decided to try to be really specific this time (don't know if it will work):

exercise twice a week
eat better foods (less junk)
reduce to 3 cigarettes or less per day (HA!)
say one nice thing to dh each day
say I love you to dd at least once each day

Happy new year!

Xanthe · 04/01/2003 16:46

I've decided to keep a diary. I used to do this regularly many years ago pre-husband and pre-kids in the days when I had masses of time to write it, but not much to write about, so it was full of deep soul-searching stuff! This time I just want to keep a record of daily events, so rhat I can remember when we did such-and-such in years to come. Thought it would be especially useful for reminding me about family holidays.

Now that ds2 is at nursery in the mornings I will have time to myself to keep it up-to-date, which I didn't have when the children were younger so let's see if I can keep going beyond the end of January ...
