Ok, I know it's corny but I just had to start this one. So, what is then? Mine has to be 'A Spaceman came travelling' by Chris De Burgh - it is so beautiful and always brings a lump to my throat and (now I'm showing my age) I do have a soft spot for Last Christmas by Wham - it reminds me of my youth!!

I love all the Christmas songs :-

Last Christmas
I wish it could be Christmas every day
Frosty the Snowman
I saw mummy kissing Santa Claus
Merry Christmas everyone
Fairy Tale in New York

RosieT · 18/12/2002 11:53

What about "When a Child is Born"? by Johnnie Mathis.
(Although my personal fave is "Little Donkey" sung by my ds' s Nursery choir. Aaaaah

lou33 · 18/12/2002 12:25

"Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree for me.
I've been an awful good girl Santa baby, so hurry down the chimney tonight"

GeorginaA · 18/12/2002 12:27

Can I add the tackiness factor please?!

Mel & Kim (the other Mel & Kim) "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree" (was on the radio this morning - it brought a smile!)

JaneyT · 18/12/2002 12:33

Nutjob - it has to be Last Christmas by Wham for me as well - reminds me of someone I fancied at school one Christmas ! See him around very occassionally, can't think what all the fuss was about !!

RosieT · 18/12/2002 12:37

I don't think you beat a bit of Frankie, though, for atmosphere. "Chestnuts roasting by an open fire... Jack Frost nipping at your toes..."

Lucy123 · 18/12/2002 12:43

Last Christmas? you lot are so soppy.

It's not so much a question of a "fave" song, but the only one I don't feel like retching to is "Fairy Tale of New York" by the Pogues with Kirsty MacColl in particular the bit that goes "merry Christmas you arsehole I pray god it's our last".

bah humbug!

GillW · 18/12/2002 14:05

Driving Home for Christmas by Chris Rea. Quite like "I believe in Father Christmas" too.

susanmt · 18/12/2002 16:12

My fave Carols are 'It Came Upon The Midnight Clear' (so modern in a scarey way) and 'O Holy Night', but the CHristmas song that always sends a shiver down my spine is 'Do They Know It's Christmas'. I was in Woolies the other day and the first few chords came on and I still got that shiver - I was 14 when it was released, I think that is why, it all seems so real to me even now - and of course it is all happening again as well.

I Believe in Father Christmas by Greg Lake and the goosebump inducing Do They Know it's Christmas. I agree about those opening chords!

Marina · 18/12/2002 19:13

Susanmt, another vote for It Came Upon a Midnight Clear - you are so right about the words...

"So hush your words, ye men of strife, and hear the angels sing".

And on the secular front, "Fairytale of New York" makes me smile and remember dear Kirsty MacColl.

Tinker · 18/12/2002 19:17

'Merry Christmas, War is Over' still does it for me. Even find Yoko's , ahem, 'voice' bearable.

The German version of Silent Night really makes me feel emotional as well.

Tissy · 18/12/2002 19:46

I don't feel Christmassy until I have heard the Salvation Army Band playing, just about any carol will do, but my favourite is In the Bleak Midwinter. I also love Three Kings from Persian Lands Afar- they usually sing it on the 9 lessons and Carols on Christmas Eve afternoon, the solo tenor voice that starts it is sooo beautiful!

suedonim · 18/12/2002 20:06

Another vote for 'In the Bleak Midwinter', too, it's so atmospheric. I also love 'Angels From the Realms of Glory.'

'Chestnuts Roasting' does it for me, and David Essex's 'A Winter's Tale' makes me boohoo, plus I have a soft spot for 'When a Child is Born' because someone requested it for me at a disco when I was pg with dd2 one Christmas.

I think I'll go and put on an Xmas CD now!

Tissy · 18/12/2002 20:11

sue, are you back in Scotland now? Its going to be -5 tonight!!

bossykate · 18/12/2002 20:36

i have to (somewhat shamefacedly) put my hand up for "so here it is - merry christmas" by the immortal slade.

having spent my entire school life in the choir, i took part in many a carol service and i know the words to a fair few of them and get rather nostalgic when i hear them.

my all time favourite is one you don't hear often outside nine lessons and carols services, and i don't even know the correct title, but it goes

lullay, lullay, my dear son, my sweeting,
lullay, lullay my dear heart, my own dear darling...etc

loses a lot in transcription without the music, lol!

if anyone knows the correct name for this, could they please let me know?

thanks!

suedonim · 18/12/2002 20:54

Tissy, that would explain why my legs are numb from the knees down!! Actually, it's been a lovely bright and sunny day today even though the frost didn't lift. I won't tell DH it's -5 until after he's put the bins out this evening, lol!

Zoe · 18/12/2002 21:26

You can't beat O Holy Night and O Come All Ye Faithful for carols.

Dh bought a Christmas CD this year and we have been loving Merry Christmas by The Waitresses and also Step Into Christmas by Elton John. The Power Of Love by Frankie Goes To Hollywood anyone? (ok not strictly festive, but was Christmas number one and had a Nativity based video)

Adelaide · 18/12/2002 21:41

I'm with Lucy123 on this one - Pogues & Kirsty Fairytale of New York. Never tire of singing "you scumbag, you maggot, you cheap lousy faggot etc" at the top of my voice. There's festive for you.

Lambchops · 18/12/2002 21:58

The Sunday School kids dressed as angels and shepherds singing 'Away in a Manger'
Oh! Bawling my eyes out!

thumper · 18/12/2002 23:04

Got to be I Believe in father Christmas for me but mainly because I remember the year when it was kept from Christmas number one because of that little ditty Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Have to add I wasnt old enough to understand it all but my big brother was distraught and still harps on about it twenty years later.

Current fave is I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus cos dd loves it and keeps telling daddy i kissed someone else!

Janeway · 18/12/2002 23:09

Little Donkey, Little Donkey, had a heavy day
Little Donkey carry Mary safely on her way

Ring out those bells tonight, Bethlehem, Bethlehem
Follow that star so bright, Bethlehem, Bethlehem

It was my favourite to sing as a child, as was "Little Drummer boy", and they still are now

RosieT · 19/12/2002 09:56

Bossykate ? is that the Coventry Carol?

Marina · 19/12/2002 10:04

It is, RosieT.
Bossykate, ds delighted us all with a bellow of "It's CHRRIIIISTMAS!" the other morning. I wondered how he had smuggled Slade into the house until I noticed that the song is part of a Bob the Builder Boxing Day special on CBeebies. Nod as a Bob the Builder puppet, indeed...disgraceful.
