Nana 90 years old fell in car park. Advice please

Firstly thank you for reading and thank you again for any advice.

My nana was 90 in June and doesn’t go out very often. She goes to bingo which she has loved for as long as I can remember and I’m 44. I’m her granddaughter. She goes to bingo 2 afternoons a week max sometimes not as many. Bingo lasts maybe 2 hours. One day a week my mum (her daughter) and I (her granddaughter) take her out for her shopping/groceries/little extras.

Today we went out and when we nearly finished shopping my nana said she wasn’t feeling well, she was just not wanting to take her coat off and felt a bit hot. I took my nana out to the car to have a seat. We were literally 5-10 feet from the car as I went to open the car door for her to get in. There was an island in between parked cars with a post up high saying how long we could be there before we were charged but cars were parked alongside it and my nana fell over it. I’ve never felt so frightened. Even now I xan see it happen in slow motion. I ran over immediately and as she’s had two knee replacement she isn’t very mobile. Luckily a man came over who must have heard me scream or see my nana fall and helped me lift her up to carry her to the car. On getting to the car I noticed she had a deep cut to her upper eyelid and cuts on her hand. She was then very sick I think due to the shock and was shaking due to this. After the shock wore off she’s feeling sore down the one side of her body where she fell. After she fell she was looking for her glasses but there were shattered. Before I left her tonight she had bruised swollen lip, black/bruised eye and bruised nose. I dread to think how bruised she will be tomorrow.
after a long cry and thinking what I can do to stop this happening again I’m looking for advice to whether to contact car park. This island is between parked cars in all directions, to the side front and back and I don’t think this is safe.
can anyone advise please. I would hate this to happen to anyone else.
thank you

I did not expect that twist at the end of the op. Why are you banging on about the car park layout?!

Focus on your nan, get her some proper medical attention.

Trebolle · 11/10/2024 07:58

I hope you can get her to A&E. she really does need checking.

marcopront · 11/10/2024 07:59

If you have no medical reports then you won't be able to claim for compensation.
Is that a good enough reason for you to take her to the doctor?

itwasnevermine · 11/10/2024 08:00

OP you seem very convinced she didn't hit her head, she didn't have a stroke etc., but she wasn't taken to A&E so how do you know?

She could've got small bits of glass in her eye or the cut, and if her glasses cut her eyelids that would imply there was some sort of impact and so she hit her head?

She needed an ambulance to be honest, you shouldn't have moved her and shouldn't have taken her home. I don’t know what advice you were expecting to be honest

Darkfloods · 11/10/2024 08:01

If you are planning to sue the car park owners then you need a medical report.

Not taking a 90 year old to hospital after a fall is surprising especially as she was sick afterwards and has injured her face and had felt unwell before the fall.

Dibbydoos · 11/10/2024 08:10

Who operates the car park @Fingerscrossed11 I'd contact them first because there's been an accident on a property they manage. I'd then talk to them about the islands - could do with a picture to know what you mean exactly - and whether they can be removed - it will be expensive so it's unlikely unless they're already planning to revamp the car park.

The alternative is to work out where to park or walk to avoid the risk uneven ground presents - I assume your nana missed her footing and fell which is why she landed on her side, bless her.

You did the right thing checking her over. She doesn't need A&E but may need to see a GP or attend a walk in centre - possibly should have been seen on the day of the accident - but def book her in if she's in pain etc. The only other thing to think about is that she was already starting to feel unwell which might have contributed to the accident, so try to find out why she felt unwell.

I hope she feels better soon.

If this isn't a bonkers AI post then get your Grandma to hospital today.

BitOutOfPractice · 11/10/2024 08:12

Oh lord op I hate to pile in but you really do need to get your nan checked over. My mom is a similar age and recently had a fall so I know how scary it is and how stubborn they are but she really does need checking. Will you be able to get her seen today?

Gozillah · 11/10/2024 08:13

So you don't take her to A&E but have money signs in your eyes over sueing the catpark already?

Nice.

shellyleppard · 11/10/2024 08:13

No update since the early hours I wonder how nana is??? I would have been straight to a and e regardless. Or as previous posters have said its a compo claim

LIZS · 11/10/2024 08:17

Take her to minor injuries or gp at least. You are focussing on the wrong thing. Older people tend to be stoic and minimise pain to avoid causing inconvenience but they are quite fragile and injury prone. The kerb she may ,or may not, have tripped on is of less concern but report it if you think it was not clear, ie had contrast paint or lighting poor.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 11/10/2024 08:17

Your Nana almost certainly hit her head, her glasses will have taken the brunt hence the damage from the glasses but that is a head injury and she should have gone to hospital. Particularly as she vomited after!

At 90, you become more frail and minor things like feeling hot can affect balance and increase falls risk. Eyesight won’t be as good, hearing, all these things impact stability. There are trip hazards everywhere, they can never be eliminated!

unkownone · 11/10/2024 08:21

Oh dear I have a 98 year old grandmother and even at 90 I was holding her arm when out. They think they are great on their feet but aren’t! Especially as you said she was feeling unwell beforehand. She needs a check over. At that age falls can cause fractures that they don’t know til the pain goes on for ages.

Fizbosshoes · 11/10/2024 08:30

Sorry this happened OP , it sounds very distressing for both you and your Nan. Sitting in a hospital for hours may have been more uncomfortable for her, although depending on what else was happening , her age and potential head injury may have meant she was seen more swiftly.
I had to attend a minor injuries unit a couple of years ago and an older lady (although possibly not 90) came in with a bleeding head and she was seen almost immediately.
I would definitely seek medical attention today, from minor injuries or a GP.

I'm not entirely sure I quite get how the car park is, but I think the priority needs to be getting a medical check.

You don't say you nearly tripped on the same part, and not meaning to be unkind or ageist, someone of that age who already felt unwell, might be less mobile and possibly bad eyesight, is more likely to trip and fall. I know my dad fell in the park once, and there was no obvious trip hazard.

Coruscations · 11/10/2024 08:31

Last time I took my 90 year old mother to minor injuries they fast-tracked her because of her age and frailty, it may be the same if you take your gran.

outdamnedspots · 11/10/2024 08:37

She had a deep cut to her upper eyelid ... bruised swollen lip, black/bruised eye and bruised nose.

That's the very definition of a head injury.

Take her to be seen by a doctor and stop banging on about compensation.

There won't be a comps claim with a trip to a and e and medical evidence.
