Sainsbury's have just called to say they need to see 3 forms of ID when they deliver our order tomorrow - is this usual?

This will be our third or fourth home delivery from them, it's always been to the same address and we always order more or less the same stuff. I had an email from Sainsbury's today which I deleted without opening as there were 2 spelling errors in the subject title and it was from an odd sounding email address and now they've just called to say when they deliver tomorrow they want to see 3 forms of ID. Just sounds a bit odd - anyone else had this? Thanks.

Sounds strange to me....

Blandmum · 13/04/2008 18:37

I've never been asked for any ID.

sounds like a scam to me

MaureenMLove · 13/04/2008 18:38

Er, isn't the fact that you are standing behind the door that he's just delivered to & the fact that the shopping is already paid for enough proof? How ridiculous!

ScoobyDoo · 13/04/2008 18:39

Anyway it's none of there friggin business you have paid for the shopping by the time they bring it to your house...

TheFallenMadonna · 13/04/2008 18:41

Eh?

Sounds

Greyriverside · 13/04/2008 18:47

Sounds dodgy to me. If they are serious I'd be inclined to say "hmm nope. but feel free to carry all this back if you like"

ruddynorah · 13/04/2008 18:48

ring the store your delivery comes from. may be the driver up to something.

geek3 · 13/04/2008 18:51

I would call the store and ask if this really is required. If they say it was not them, I would call the police who could be waiting in your house for the scammers to arrive who want your proof of ID.

popsycal · 13/04/2008 18:54

I have had delieveries from 4 differnt supermarkets and never have been asked for ID even when buying alcohol.....

poppy34 · 13/04/2008 18:56

definitely suspect -like popsycal never been asked for any id by any of 4 delivery companies.

Ring store/helpline

avenanap · 13/04/2008 18:57

Never. Change to ocado. They brought me free banana cake last time they delivered.

FrayedKnot · 13/04/2008 19:01

Never been asked for any. You must ring them. Is their helpline open?

Hassled · 13/04/2008 19:02

Dodgy as hell - either delivery man is out to scam you, someone has observed when you get deliveries and has made an intelligent guess that you're due one and is scamming you, or Sainsbury's website is less than secure (which I would very much doubt). Do not provide ID and ring Sainsburys.

WanderingTrolley · 13/04/2008 19:04

Never had this.

Ocado deliver and don't give a fuck who I am.

I heart them and all their plastic booties and freebie cake and (in my case) wine and pasta sauce.

Guitargirl I embrace you warmly for deleting an email on the grounds of spelling errors in the subject line. Do you frequent Pedants' Corner muchly?

NotABanana · 13/04/2008 19:36

Definitely dodgy.

Guitargirl · 13/04/2008 19:38

Thanks everyone for the advice. I have cancelled our order online. I tried to call the general enquiries number on the website but it's not open on Sundays. I will ring them tomorrow though to explain why I have cancelled the order and ask them to remove my details from their database. I did ask the woman I spoke to on the phone why we were being asked for the ID and was told that it is standard security procedure caried out at random. I might have understood it if the address had changed or our order was suddenly vastly different but that's not the case.

Guess it will be Ocado from now on (and will definitely try their banana cake!). WanderingTrolley - I have not yet ventured into Pedants' Corner, am not sure if my grammar would withstand their scrutiny, will have a peek though!

Sainsburys normally deliver from your biggest local supermarket. Have you tried phoning them directly and asking them whether this is procedure? It sounds very nosey to me, under the data protection act I don't think that they should be asking you for this information, they don't ask for it when you go into the supermarket.

NotABanana · 13/04/2008 19:45

Do you remember when sometimes the bank did extra checks on your card when paying, it is just random. Maybe this is the same but it still sounds a bit odd and OTT.

jingleyjen · 13/04/2008 19:47

No.. I get regular deliveries from them.. I would call the store even though you have cancelled your order.. who else is the driver scamming tomorrow??

SaintGeorge · 13/04/2008 20:00

Asking for ID in a shop is one thing, but what ID do they expect to get on a doorstep that is actually worth anything?

You are in the house FGS, you therefore probably have access to the home owners ID so the whole exercise is pointless.

All very strange and bogus sounding.

NotQuiteCockney · 13/04/2008 20:15

It sounds perfectly normal, tbh. Badly explained, but perfectly normal.

How on earth could the driver scam people by getting ID from you? And how would the driver know who they'd be delivering to on a set day?

Guitargirl · 13/04/2008 20:17

Yes, I thought that was weird too. Especially as the woman I spoke to on the phone specified that one of the 3 forms of ID would have to show proof of address, am not sure what that would show given that I would be standing in the doorway of the given address...?! I will also call the local store tomorrow and give you an update on what they say.

I don't like things like this, probably totally innocent but still it makes me feel uncomfortable...

StealthPolarBear · 13/04/2008 20:23

weird
only ever get Tesco order but never had anything like this
Do join us in pedants' corner - you sound perfectly suited
I have had two scamming emails from 'Natwest' in the last couple of days, one was fairly decent, in the other the spelling and grammar was appalling - they hadn't even tried! That reminds me, I wanted to post in geeky stuff about them...

popsycal · 14/04/2008 13:26

did you ri ng?
