Does anyone smoke anymore? And if so why?

This is not aiming to lecture or judge anyone who smokes cigarettes (not vaping) as yous are all grown ups and know about the effects of smoking etc...but I genuinely don't know anyone who smokes cigarettes anymore ...I know a lot of people who vape instead. Wondering why people still smoke in this day and age? as it's also ££££, unhealthy blah blah.....

Almost all the staff at Mum's care home smoke. I think it's more common in people with challenging jobs.

Devilsmommy · 21/07/2024 10:02

I've been a heavy smoker for 26 years and I'm not ashamed to admit it. It's my one vice and I don't want to give up. Don't understand why vaping is acceptable when it's no different really. Nicotine and they smell awful.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 21/07/2024 10:09

I smoke a rollie occasionally with my friend who smokes - I have one every couple of months. Love it, it’s a little treat.

Dontcallmescarface · 21/07/2024 10:10

I smoke for the same reasons that other people like to drink alcohol I guess.

NashvilleQueen · 21/07/2024 10:15

Currently on holiday in France and really noticed the difference in the number of smokers here compared to UK. Ashtrays on all tables, most people it seems are smokers.

I was in France last week and it was astonishing the number of people smoking outside cafes and bars. No one was vaping. All old fashioned cigarettes. Notwithstanding the health risks it was preferable to seeing everyone sucking on a vape all the time tbh!

I'm assuming cigarettes are a lot cheaper in France.

Depends where you are in the UK.

Not many smokers in London but a lot of vapers, loads of smokers in Doncaster.

Vitriolinsanity · 21/07/2024 10:22

Well, my DH was arrested at 6:30 one morning in front of my DC and is now in prison. Our entire life was detonated by his actions in the space of one morning. I won't describe other awful events of the past couple of years, but re-starting smoking was the least of my worries.

NoahVale · 21/07/2024 10:24

because they like it

AstonMartha · 21/07/2024 10:25

I know lots of smokers. I used to (for years) but stopped when I realised that I was kidding myself that I liked it or that it helped with my stress.
I don’t miss it and can’t imagine smoking now.

thefamous5 · 21/07/2024 10:28

My husband does.

He is addicted, and to be honest, I think he enjoys it.

Yes, we would both rather he didn't, and he said that at some point he hopes to quit, but if he doesn't, well, he doesn't.

NoahVale · 21/07/2024 10:32

me and dh started vaping about 14 years ago - i stopped smoking,
he carried on and does both.
so irritating.
and still expensive

HelpMeGetThrough · 21/07/2024 10:33

Yep, I'm a smoker, not a heavy smoker and it doesn't cost me mega money.

I could stop, as it's more habit than anything else, but I enjoy it. If I go out anywhere, I don't take the ciggys and don't crave it.

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 21/07/2024 10:36

I know maybe 3 people who smoke. Plus some kids at work.
I luckily never started due to asthma. Literally everyone I knew smoked when I was younger( mid fifties)
I would suggest that alcohol has replaces it tbh.

Mabelface · 21/07/2024 10:40

I started again when my mum was dying in hospital. Managed to quit again until anniversaries hit and started again. It's a coping mechanism. Working up to quitting again soon.

MumblesParty · 21/07/2024 14:57

People are addicted, and switching to vaping isn’t for everyone. I imagine smokers feel they’ve made a calculated risk with smoking, but vaping is a bit of an unknown, and some smokers prefer to stay as they are.

There’s no doubt that smoking makes many people feel better in the short term. Sadly, as a GP of nearly 30 years, I’ve seen a vast number of people regretting taking the risk, and wishing they could have their time again.

But some people love it so much they never regret it. Even as my Gran wheezed and coughed up blood as she died from lung cancer, she still defended the glory of cigarettes.

DoAClassicCamel · 21/07/2024 16:43

I can tolerate cigarette smoke but I hate vapes more. Especially as some vapers don’t seem to think the rules don’t apply to them.

Probably the only way they can get regular breaks! Used to be common thing for people to join the smokers to get a breather then they started smoking as well.

netflixfan · 21/07/2024 16:51

It looks cool.

netflixfan · 21/07/2024 16:53

Only half joking. Look at the 40s film stars, Rock stars of old, French people.
I have up smoking 20 years ago and no going back by the way.

Totallywoah · 21/07/2024 16:53

I started smoking age 16 and gave up when I was 36. I was recently for the first time in years around a heavy smoker and I can't believe how much I used to love it, I find the smell so disgusting.
I used The NHS stop smoking service to stop and was prescribed Champix. I don't think they're available anymore., Not sure why they worked well on the people I know who stopped.

Himitsu · 21/07/2024 16:55

I’m not addicted I just enjoy the very occasional cig. Maybe one a month with a glass of wine in the garden if the suns outs

Windmill32 · 21/07/2024 18:07

I have up smoking 4 years ago. My husband just kept on and on, for me to give up. He gave up 20 years ago (40 a day). Pre vapes. I vape most days. Would never have smoked that much. Vaping will kill me quicker than smoking ever could. I used to smoke 10 max a day. Vaping is worse but doesn't smell, so is somehow acceptable. Vile habit

ineedtogwtoutbeforeitatoohot · 21/07/2024 18:41

I smoke when I go out with my friends and have a drink. I enjoy it

suburberphobe · 21/07/2024 18:52

I'm still smoking but then I don't drive a car so only doing it to myself IYSWIM.

Come from a family of smokers - some have quit - and both my dad and grandad lived to a ripe old age. (80's/90's).

Just been tested in the hospital (for unrelated stuff) and my lungs are totally fine.

I'm sure it has a lot to do with genetics. I know someone who died of lung cancer in her mid-30s, never smoked. Her dad died of the same.
