Where to live in nottingham

We will be moving to Nottingham in August. My husband will be working in NUH/Queens medical centre.

Where would be a good place to live? Dd is 6 years old and will be in year 3 from September.

We don’t want to spend more than 700k. Happy to consider state or private schools.

thank you !!

£700k goes a long way in Nottingham, you could buy in any area with that really. So it's about schools, commute time, city suburb vs village or small town etc.

wollaton is popular with wealthier people who work at qmc, good schools, or the park if you want to be in town itself, but school choices less unless fee paying, or various nice villagey/small town places like ruddington, bramcote etc

maybe a bit more about what you want to be near/what kind of house you want might help

Manyandyoucanwalkover · 21/03/2024 23:27

Bramcote Hills or Wollaton are both lovely and very handy for QMC. The schools are good there too.

Disneyiscool · 22/03/2024 07:56

We both grew up in big cities. So we are hoping for somewhere with cafes, boutique shops, things to do for young kids.
we are not huge fan of new builds

Beeston. There's a decent town centre with a cinema, loads of cafés and bars. Direct tram to QMC and centre of Nottingham.

Decent range of housing stock from Victorian to all the way up to new build. You'd get a nice house for 700k.

I can't comment on schools, though.

Somewhere towny then? Beeston yes, Sherwood (or the adjacent posher Mapperley Park). But parking is a horror at NUH so being sure where you're based for work and ideally if you can get there without driving would be helpful (although senior drs with on calls will very likely get a permit)

Is west bridgeford still popular and nice? It certainly used to have a reputation of where the yummy mummies wanted to live, lots of young families (and over subscribed school so check that). It has a nice David Lloyd gym with a good spa area 😁

Pinktank · 23/03/2024 06:18

I live in Nottingham. My daughters starting in reception at one of the city centre private schools in Sept. There’s a wide range of private schools in Nottingham, as well as Loughborough, with the quality of teaching and facilities varying widely so I’d focus on finding the right school first and then look at the areas you might want live.

Disneyiscool · 23/03/2024 07:47

My dd is at a GDST school at the moment and we are thinking of a transfer. What will be the school run like living in Beeston or West Bridgford to NGHS and then going to work at NUH?

Yes west bridgford of course, good for qmc, not so much for city hospital. Very nice

There are plenty of kids go to the high school, from Wollaton and Bramcote Hills. There are plenty of buses to catch.

that would be a fairly horrible drive unless the child goes on a bus. If you are going to use the High School I'd look at Mapperley Park

From Beeston you should be able to use the tram to get into NGHS, and if it's the QMC hospital site that's on the same tram line.

Offredismysister · 23/03/2024 20:17

I’d agree with Beeston, it’s a lovely area. I used to get the tram from there to QMC, it’s only about 5 stops. Lots of children in NGHS uniform on at the same time too, so a popular choice.

HelenaJustina · 23/03/2024 20:20

A sibling started work at QMH last year, they have a young family and are very happy in Beeston.

In that case Lady Bay, or West Bridgeford

nocoolnamesleft · 23/03/2024 20:26

When I was at QMC loads of the docs lived in West Bridgford.

Lion400 · 23/03/2024 20:27

A friend of mine lives in The Park, Nottingham. It’s a beautiful area!

PhamieGowsSong · 23/03/2024 20:36

We are from Nottingham. Nice areas are:

West Bridgford - we lived here, would definitely recommend
Wollaton
Ruddington - we lived here would definitely recommend
The Park - very posh and in the City Centre

Do not move to:
Chilwell
Beeston
Lady Bay i.e Trent Bridge
The Meadows
St Ann's
Anywhere North of the River

Disneyiscool · 23/03/2024 20:36

Lots of food for thought, thank you
Am I being ambitious of hoping to drop DD off at NGHS at 8 am sharp and dash to QMC in the hope of arriving before 8.15 through morning traffic?

DS lives in Nottingham near the Uni Park and we really like Beeston. Very mixed housing- he lives in a 1930's ex Council terrace but there are some lovely more expensive houses there. Lots of good cafes, cinema complex and I always feel very safe there. Easy bus ride to QMC. I don't know anything about schools though.
He rented near the Park which was attractive.

Thindog · 23/03/2024 20:43

Traffic congestion in Nottingham is awful in the mornings, but tram and bus services are frequent. Getting to QMC from Beeston, Wollaton, or Bramcote to QMC is easy, lots of people who work at the hospitals or University live in these "nice" areas. Four bed traditional detached houses with good sized gardens under 700 k, look on Zoopla.

Adele64 · 23/03/2024 20:45

The Park is a nice area, close to the city centre (although that’s not so nice nowadays!) plus convenient for the High School and QMC.

I’ve lived in West Bridgford for 20 years and brought my children up here. The state schools here were the best in Notts when I moved here. It’s c10 minutes from Nottingham in the car ( dependent upon traffic) and not much further from QMC.

It’s home to Trent Bridge cricket ground, 2 football teams, an M & S food hall, numerous bars and restaurant, Waterstones, Oliver Bonas, restaurants of all nationalities (incl Cote Brasserie and Wagamama plus numerous decent independents), coffee shops, fortnightly farmer’s market plus plant market in the summer, a library and a nice park. The Castle Healthcare Centre is amazing (QMC linked) and there are plenty of good private dentists.

Rushcliffe Council are great, the parks are well maintained and there are events during the summer (outdoor cinema etc) and at Xmas.

It’s a great place for kids to grow up safely and have some independence. Virgin and David Lloyd gyms nearby plus small yoga and reformer studios.

Plenty of walks along the river/ golf course and fields.

Lady Bay adjoins West Bridgford and has the feel of a smaller community. Lots of creative people live there. 5-15 min walk to WB town centre or the river.

FHP Living list some of the better properties.

Teamrofl · 23/03/2024 20:47

Parking is going to be your problem at 8.15 at QMC I would guess, even with a permit car parks are often full by then. We live in West Bridgford-it’s very popular with medics and sounds like what you’d be looking for. Easy commute to QMC, less so to City. Our children aren’t school age yet but local schools all reported to be very good.
The Park is also lovely.

Adele64 · 23/03/2024 20:50

I agree 15 mins would be a stretch. The QMC building is huge to navigate too but I guess you’ve already visited.

This would be very ambitious. I drive easily from West Bridgford to the QMC in under 20 minutes every day, but going via NGHS would make it hellish - you would probably need to put her on the school bus. Schools in West Bridgford, Bramcote and Wollaton are really good so you might want to look at those before you opt for NGHS. Bridgford has the best range of shops, cafes etc. But getting into schools there can be tricky, although less so recently as birth rates drop. £700k will get you a much better house in Bramcote or Wollaton than in West Bridgford.
