So what was the consensus on sarcasm and swearing with no personal attacks then?

Because I have had my post deleted and I don't understand why!

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2008 15:34

were you not making a personal attack? I didn't see the post but from later comments it seemed that way

S1ur · 17/03/2008 15:35

What did you say?

Ah now you can't say can you, mmm, can you say in a sanitised bleeped out sort of a way? Going to have to get a jist at least in order to comment.

Oh and a link to thread [nosy emoticon]

pagwatch · 17/03/2008 15:38

I had a comment removed the other day for using 'twat' - but I understood that that was because i called the person a twat rather than using twat within my post.

apparently it seems being accurate is not a defense.

It was my first deleted post. I couldn't dcided whether I was mortified or stangely satisfied. Still not sure.

WhenIrishSquonksAreSmiling · 17/03/2008 15:39

the problem with sarcasm on t'internet is that nobody can hear that you are being sarcastic.

Twould be tres easy for them to take what you posted at face value and be mightily offended by it.

Particularly if they don't "know" you and your propensity for ironic comments

when I say "you" I mean "me" actually, but you kwim

TheAntiFlounce · 17/03/2008 15:40

No, I wasn't I was just being silly.

I'm not going to link in case I get this thread deleted - but basically, I replied to a woman asking what food she can and can't eat in a foreign country while pregnant, and I replied along the lines of "Oh you're not going to eat are you? How irresponsible, won't someone think of the children. That poor poor innocent baby who gets no choice etcetc(I'm just being a C**t now)"

and that was IT.

It really was NOT a personal attack! And I really am upset and angry that I have been deleted for that, when nobody else ever has, I never have before, and how anyone took it personally I don't know!

OP posts:
WhenIrishSquonksAreSmiling · 17/03/2008 15:42

rofl!

she took you seriously didn't she!

take a step back for a minute, forget about sarcasm, and read your post as someone else might, someone who doesn't know your posting style.

Now think again, does it come across as slightly attacking?

maybe just a little bit?

WhenIrishSquonksAreSmiling · 17/03/2008 15:42

you see, I just read my post back and it seemed to come across are really patronising.

Which was not what I intended

sorry

morningpaper · 17/03/2008 15:43

Who IS the antiflounce, are you a name changer?

Anyway don't take it personally

Make it a notch on your bedpost

WhenIrishSquonksAreSmiling · 17/03/2008 15:43

are really patronising?

as really patronising.

I'll get me coat...

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2008 15:44

hmm weird
i assumed you called her that (and didn't understand it - it seemed to come out of nowhere)
very odd - you attacked yourself! Surely that's allowed
I am the stupidest polar bear I've ever met. I wouldn't wee on me if I was on fire.

Carmenere · 17/03/2008 15:44

I haven't even looked at that thread as I knew it would irritate me from the title. HOWEVER, I can see how what you wrote could be construed as unhelpful and a bit personal and not in the spirit of mn (ie making each others lives easier with help and advice ect).

Do you not think it was a bit nasty? And as such better off gone?

S1ur · 17/03/2008 15:45

Well that does sound silly, as is much of mn. Perhaps misguided with an unknown poster but hardly worth censoring.

Devil's advocate here. Perhaps she thought you were mimicking her, Imagine whiney voice saying "oh poor me how will I cope in foreign climes et etc... I am being a cunt"

It could be construed that way I suppose.

My guess is that if it is reported then mn will be happy to explain why.

FWIW I don't think posts which are a bit nasty should be deleted.

(not talking about OP here just in general)

katierocket · 17/03/2008 15:48

LOL fio

TheAntiFlounce · 17/03/2008 15:49

Oh ok, better off not posted maybe, but really, censored? AFTER the verbal walloping I got (and realistically, deserved)?

Does anyone else get poorly judged jokes removed? I've seen PLENTY in the same vein - how was I to know someone would have a cow this time?

OP posts:
Carmenere · 17/03/2008 15:50

Well don't take it personally, I got deleted for allegedly posting a spoiler of a programme that had been on already, someone complained because they wanted to watch the repeat FFS

WhenSquonkyEyesAreSmiling · 17/03/2008 15:51

I suspect that if someone were to complain about one of my poorly judged jokes, then they would be removed.

MNHQ only delete when asked to. If people are generally happy that the offensive poster has been thoroughly verbally wolloped enough, they probably wouldn't bother to report it.

Put it down as a tick of "things to do on MN before I de-register"

ZippiBabes · 17/03/2008 15:51

well it probably would come acros as a bit

up yourself

but not worth deletion

WhenSquonkyEyesAreSmiling · 17/03/2008 15:52

carmenere... that's going too far!

My mum does things like that - she rings me up to complain that the paper had the details of a soap storyline from last week.

They don't know she taped it all week!

TheAntiFlounce · 17/03/2008 15:52

de-register?

I couldn't possibly, it's very important I continue, er being here for important research reasons.

Um.

OP posts:
ZippiBabes · 17/03/2008 15:53

i got into huge trouble for writing

and its up north

but it wasnt actually deleted

WhenSquonkyEyesAreSmiling · 17/03/2008 15:54

yeah, yeah, yeah... you're "just looking something up on the internet dear" and you'll "be with you in just a second" and you'll definitely "get tea on in just a mo" and you'll do the housework "tomorrow"

been there.

WhenSquonkyEyesAreSmiling · 17/03/2008 15:55

I think I remember that, zippi. You were being mightily rude . Can't remember what it was you were being rude about though... was it a shopping centre?

TheAntiFlounce · 17/03/2008 15:58

yes it was snide and unhelpful and immature and really I should have thought twice and not posted that on a Noob's thread, because the poor woman only wanted some advice.

But Lordy, it wasn't aimed at her, really it was a poke at the militant "You Are A MOTHER NOw, how could you be seeking physical pleasure of any kind" Daily Mail-esque rompous pompous destroyers of fun.
