Wearing white to a wedding as a guest

Help! I'm struggling to find an outfit for my friends wedding next week. I've found 2 dresses that I love but both are white. Can you wear white to a wedding as a guest? If it makes any difference the wedding is being held at a registry office rather than a church. It is also a very small wedding with 10 people including the bride and groom!

Find one in one of the many many other colours, don't be a dick.

MrsPoliportsGoose · 16/10/2023 17:04

No. You cannot wear white as a guest to a wedding. Who even has to ask that question? Jesus.

TheFlis · 16/10/2023 17:04

Don’t were white. Someone wore pale cream to mine and I took no notice on the day but it sticks out like a sore thumb in the photos.

caringcarer · 16/10/2023 17:06

Every month someone wants to know if they should wear white to a wedding. The answer is always no. It's not your special day. Let the bride have the limelight. You can surely find a dress in any other colour except we hire or black.

Jesus wept 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm hearing you all loud and clear 😂

Mn is completely insane about white at weddings. And black. I don't think I've ever encountered such entrenched in the general population.

jannier · 16/10/2023 17:13

It's always been a no and not just a MN thing especially at a registry office where the bride may be in more like day wear. Only someone who wanted to be the centre of attention would wear it.

White background with a print is fine. Absolutely not all white. That's just manners

Bridgetx88 · 16/10/2023 17:23

How about polka dot? White background with black spots?

So mainly white then? Don’t be that guest

I'm hearing you all. I've found a burgundy one that is ok

In person, no ones going to say ‘I can’t believe you chose to wear white, what a fool you’re making of yourself’, but people will be thinking it for sure.

Er yes, it is rife in the general population as well. It is also traditionally considered a faux pas to wear green to a wedding. Don't know why not.

I don't think anyone I know is petty enough to think that someone other the bride wearing white is 'making a fool of themselves', though. Or that black implies mourning, or that red implies you've slept with the groom.

Worddance · 16/10/2023 17:49

No you can't.

Ponderingwindow · 16/10/2023 17:53

The smaller the wedding, the stricter the no white rule.

imagine a scenario where you end up in the same dress as the bride. That is a legitimate possibility if you wear white to a very small wedding. Sometimes brides still wear elaborate gowns, but sometimes they go shopping in the same stores you are currently shopping for something nice for a wedding, but in white because she is the bride.

Maddy70 · 16/10/2023 17:57

No no. No

14blackcrows · 16/10/2023 17:58

Maybe but run it past the bride first.
Someone turned up to me wedding in a white lace dress. No one confused her with the bride because it was a short dress and I was in a full length tulle wedding dress.
However the dress she chose was almost identical to the bridesmaids dresses! So it did look quite odd in the photos as all my bridesmaids matched exactly then she was stood there in a very similar dress but without any of the matching stuff.
I certainly wasn't angry tho it was just a bit funny.
Funnier than that was a male friend who wore a super formal black 3 piece suite, whereas my husband had gone for a more relaxed tweed trousers and jacket... and unfortunately the guy in the formal suit is stood next to me in the big group photo and honestly it looks like he's the man I've married lmao! We laugh about that to this day 'my marriage to Joe!'

Bloop1986 · 16/10/2023 18:09

Absolutely not! Just no!!

CherryMaple · 16/10/2023 18:16

My MIL wore white to my wedding. Oh yes…..

Stroopwaffels · 16/10/2023 18:17

Choose from any other colour on the planet, not white.

Bridgetx88 · 16/10/2023 19:53

I've gone with this one...
