Friend does something dangerous, what do I say?

I go out occasionally with a friend who I like very dearly. We're both nearly 50. However she has this habit which scares me a bit. She doesn't drive so I always drive. But whenever we arrive at our destination she swings passenger door of car open to get out whilst the car is still moving to park up. It means that I have to finish driving with the door wide open to park properly. This puts extra stress on me to nail parking the car in a space in one attempt.

I feel it would be telling her off to say don't do it, but I just find it dangerous, not to mention the car starts beeping like crazy as a warning that the door is open!

How can I politely advise my friend to remain calm in seat with belt on until the car has come to a complete stop and the handbrake is safely on?

Literally just say “please close the door, the car is still moving”

or as she opens the door shout “Geronimo!!!” Then when she looks at you oddly, explain why you said that.

EmmaEmerald · 24/09/2023 00:15

OP "I feel it would be telling her off to say don't do it"

but she needs to be told off. I'd be refusing to drive her.

BananaPyjamaLlama · 24/09/2023 00:21

Literally by saying what you said in the last sentence of your post.
"Please remain in your seat with your seat belt on and the door closed until the car has come to a stop and I have finished parking. ie when I turn the engine off its time for you to unclick your seatbelt"

LollipopChaos · 24/09/2023 00:22

I think the issue is she doesn't drive so isn't fully aware that the car still needs to move to the parking spot completely, the hand brake applied and the engine switched off before it's safe to do that.

BananaPyjamaLlama · 24/09/2023 00:23

Nah thats not a "not being able to drive issue" - its an impatient, lack of concern for safety issue.

I would explain to her that either she stops doing that or no more outings.

ElizaWinter · 24/09/2023 00:25

How about saying something just before you arrive 'don't go whipping off your seatbelt just yet will you, I'd never forgive myself if we hit a cyclist or you fell out'

She's nearly 50, she's met cars before.

Just tell her to stay where she is until the car has stopped. I can guarantee you won't be the only person to have told her this.

Lol she'd be half way down the street by time I've said that!

I love her dearly as a friend, but this makes me so nervous!!!

Do you have a child lock system you can activate? So she can't open the door until you unlock it?

BlurredEdges · 24/09/2023 00:32

I don't drive. That doesn't mean I'm a total fucking idiot

Previous poster's suggestion was too long-winded.

I recommend saying

"What the fuck are you doing? Don't open the fucking door while the car is moving, you twat."

This is a really good question, it's a new car so I'm not sure but I'll check the manual to see. Thank you.

What the last poster said. Put on the child lock. Or just tell her that you feel a bit nervous finishing parking with the door open, so can she please shut it.

Maybe 😂
But if you wanted to sound a bit less like a pilot or air steward, there are a million ways you could say it according to your friendship
Hang on, I haven’t stopped yet!! being just one.

LollipopChaos · 24/09/2023 00:41

I have looked at the manual and can only do child locks on back doors and not the front passenger side.

Then I would just stop the car and tell her you don't feel comfortable parking with the door open. Surely she will then shut it and it won't happen again?

This

how can she be so dense?

I'd be thinking more in terms of CUT IT THE FUCK OUT but this would work too.

Howdoesitworkagain · 24/09/2023 00:43

“Fucksake I’m going to have to put you in the back with the child locks if you can’t behave”
honestly there are so many ways of saying this without sounding like an officious twat.

ElizaWinter · 24/09/2023 00:43

You have to find your inner brave and tell her to hang on.

Ha ha!

It does amuse me slightly why she does it, I think she just gets so excited at arriving at destination that she's half hanging out the door whilst parking up.

OP posts:
WhateverMate · 24/09/2023 00:45

You don't need child locks.

You don't need a script so long you could trip over it.

You just need to simply communicate that she's not to do it anymore.

Why complicate it? She's your friend, not your bank manager. You should be able to simply tell her to stop.

LollipopChaos · 24/09/2023 00:45

kittenseverywhere · 24/09/2023 00:42

At this point she's already got one leg out the car. The whole thing is bonkers!

Scaredycatttt · 24/09/2023 00:45

Stop the car? Let her get out and shut the door, then finish parking. I think my instinct would be to stop the car of someone opened a door

NuffSaidSam · 24/09/2023 00:45

Could you hit her on the nose with a rolled up newspaper? Or spray her with water?

Reward with a chocolate when she manages to keep the door shut.
