Does anyone know? I have always wondered and Google hasn't helped!

I've heard of someone being Amanda Moo but also Milly Moo (baby boy called Miles) and Melly Moo (Melanie)

I think it's just a coincidence and isn't linked to Amanda, it's a common nickname for names with M in them

Indigo247 · 27/08/2023 13:46

They're not.

Mandy is a typical short form of Amanda. And Milly Molly Mandy (Millicent Margaret Amanda) is a childhood favourite of mine.
But Amanda Moo......... nope. Never heard anyone called that.

Needmorelego · 27/08/2023 17:56

@Totallyterrific what I have always thought funny about Milly Molly Mandy is Margaret isn't usually shortened to Molly.
Maggie, Mags, Meggie, Meg and for some strange reason Peggy but not Molly.
She should have been Milly Maggie Mandy 🤣

I'm 52, and an Amanda. Never EVER have I been called that. Not to my face anyway!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 27/08/2023 18:14

The only Amanda I know is a cow

Moo would suit her

Mimilamore · 27/08/2023 18:22

I'm an Amanda and have never been called Moo, well not to my face!

UpUpUpU · 27/08/2023 18:24

My son is Moo, not an Amanda though 😆

Cherryana · 27/08/2023 18:25

I call my husband x-moo and he isn’t called Amanda. It’s a form of endearment and it’s because of alliteration.

With Amanda - it’s the ‘Manda’ bit that the moo is alliterating with.

I guess it’s because it sounds a bit silly and rolls nicely off your tongue.

It's not specific to the name Amanda.

It's just a pet name/nickname and is often added to names with an 'm' sound. Dd isn't called Amanda but we still call her Moo at times, started when she was tiny and has stuck a bit with me/dh (she's now 21) But only privately. We don't call her it out and about.

I aman Amanda (1960s baby) and I have never been called moo.
My shortened name is Mandy.

pennyfest · 27/08/2023 18:55

I know of several people with the nickname 'Moo'. Lots of different real names though- Madeline, Maddison, Mandy, Charlotte...

Totallyterrific · 27/08/2023 21:28

@Needmorelego that is very true. Milly Maggie Mandy doesnt work quite as well though

I agree btw with regard to "needing more Lego" :)

Maraudingmarauders · 27/08/2023 21:31

I have a friend Amanda, known as Moo! I had no idea it was a common thing though, just assumed it was a random nickname she had picked up over the years.

Needmorelego · 27/08/2023 21:45

@Totallyterrific I popped to Sainsbury's yesterday for bacon and shower gel....came out with two reduced Lego sets 😂 Oops !!
About Margaret/Molly though. I think I was wrong. Molly Brown - as in "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" who was on the Titanic was actually Margaret Brown.
So young Milly Molly Mandy can keep her name 🙂
