i am 5'4 and a 12-14
i weigh 9stone7. mostly.

laundrylover · 28/02/2008 11:09

Hmmm, I'm not sure I agree Cod although I would've done before I lost all my weight. Like Orm I was doing a fair bit of running and had to stop due to injury but running toned me up and I still was over 10 stone. As I said I looked good and didn't want to lose any more weight. How skinny are we supposed to look to be classed as 'the right weight'?? In the BMI tables 'healthy weight' for 5'4 goes up to about 10 stone 5.

I don't do the big bones argument but I do hold with the big boobs one - mine are a 34F so must weigh a stone on their own!!!

alas my 34A's cannot take the blame for much of my weight.

my mother, whos 57, weighs 2 and ahalf stone less than me she is underweight tho.

TheFallenMadonna · 28/02/2008 11:13

But isn't the fact that he was so amazed a plus?e wouldn't have been so surprised if you looked porky would he? To the extent of checking the scales?

I agree with you yorkshire. I know that I am fitter than I ever have been. I know that I am slimmer and more toned than I ever have been. But I also know that I weigh more or less the same as I did before I started running - give or take a few pounds. So if BMI is used to indicate health it needs to be taken in conjunction with everything else. GP sounds like a bit of a twat.

I'm being glass half full here yp - work with me

The BMI is a blunt instrument. DH has a higher BMI than me, but I certainly carry more fat. I still tease him about it though, obviosuly

nappymadmummy · 28/02/2008 11:20

I hate this 'tick-boxing' that doctors do. I mean, they should really take into account body measurements too shouldn't they? I am 4" smaller than you and a size 14. From what I've read you're a lot healthier than me.

Any good trainer monitoring someones weightloss/fitness doesn't just keep an eye on weight... they measure the bodyfat ratio and use a tape measure.

I bet if you measured yourself you'd have lost inches and replaced fat with muscle.. which DOES weigh more.

Ignore the stupid doctor.

And yes.. boobs will add to weight, lol.. i have 40G's and they add a good 16lbs to my weight.

prettybird · 28/02/2008 11:49

You might be reassured by this article

Kathyis6incheshigh · 28/02/2008 11:51

BMI is daft.
How's your hip-waist ratio? I thought that was meant to be the best indicator of health.

prettybird · 28/02/2008 11:59

and this

cazboldy · 28/02/2008 12:01

I am 5'4 and at the moment I weigh 11 and a half stone ( am actually trying to lose weight at the moment ) I want to be 10 and a half....

I am a 12/14 on the bottom, and a 16 on top hth

viggoswife · 28/02/2008 20:46

Am 5'5 and currently weigh about 9 and a half stone. Size 12 all over.

I was 10 and a half stone a couple of years ago and was described by my Dr at the time in my notes as being "slightly obese". I was gutted. Is it even possible to be "slightly" obese, surely you are either obese or you are not?

ThingOne · 28/02/2008 21:35

I am 5'3" and have been overweight must of my adult life. A couple of times I have slipped into technically obese and taken action to get healthier each time.

I weighed more than 10 1/2 stone when I left school at 18 but was very fit and toned and wore size 12 clothes, back when size 12 really was a size 12 . My most recent standard weight over the past ten years has been 11 4. This gave me a BMI of 29.

I've lost weight since my second child was born 20+mo ago. I have been as low as 9 stone through illness and I was shocked to see quite how much fat was still left! I have put on a bit of weight, prob half a stone.

I think we have all got far, far too used to seeing overweight as normal. Clothes sizes are not a reliable guide and they have clearly been altered to be more flattering in most British shops. It was very noticeable when I was in hospital that not a singe doctor was even slightly overweight.

I think you are probably not as unhealthy as most people your weight are (I've been pretty fit and heavy too) but that you probably do still need to lose weight. I'd throw in back in their court and ask them what they propose.

Maidamess · 28/02/2008 21:38

I'm a bit taller than you (5 ft 9") but am 12 top and 14 bottom in most shops.

I'm tipping the scales at just a smidge over 11 stone at the moment.

At my lightest I was 10 1/2 stone and everyone said I was too thin ( I thought I looked great!) but I was still a 14 bottom.
