Who should be the new presenter of Home Truths?

Listened to it this morning with (I think) Tom Robinson, but although he seems a good egg I don't think he quite cuts the mustard.

Who would be a great Home Truths presenter do you think?

I can't think of anyone, although I think Jonathan Ross would be funny.

OP posts:
spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 13:31

Or Mariella Frostrup

OP posts:
spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 13:31

Or David Blunkett

Yeah, I thought that too about Tom Robinson. In fact everyone since JP has been 'ok', but I keep comparing everyone to him. Not sure about David Blunkett Shock how about Victoria Wood?

spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 13:47

No-one will ever be able to fill JP's shoes Sad

OP posts:
spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 13:52

what about Jack Dee

OP posts:
spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 13:54

I do love Mariella Frostrup's agony column in the observer

Or would she be too cool?

Nobody Sad

TinyTimsGang · 11/12/2004 13:56

Funny you should say Jack Dee - I typed his name then changed my mind, but you know I think he could be rather good.

I want JP back - it's NOT FAIR! Sad

spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 13:57

tough one isn't it

OP posts:
JanH · 11/12/2004 14:01

I honestly think they should retire the programme.

spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 14:01

I'm having serious trouble thinking of anyone who has quite the same appeal across all boundaries as JP had. And that self deprecating cosiness.

OP posts:
spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 14:01

I wondered that too jan, but it's such a good idea for a programme, it would be such a shame to lose it

Victoria Wood might be good. Perhaps they should continue to have guest presenters until someone just clicks. It's such an unusual programme, it'll probably end up being someone really unlikely who would take it over and make a success of it.

Very true SD - after all before John did HT's who would've thought of him as the ideal person?

I must admit, I don't listen to the programme so closely now because his comments 'made' the programme. I still sort of expect to hear his voice when the theme tune starts, then mentally switch off a bit when it's not him - used to do that a bit before he died and others would stand in on hols etc.

Paul Merton perhaps? Just another thought..

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 11/12/2004 14:53

Must confess, I haven't listened to it for ages - since Saturday morning became my regular lie-in - but I think Jack Dee waould do a tremendous job. He has the right mixture of wit, experience of family life, and, I think, a hidden caring side to him.

spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 15:04

Agree about Jack Dee. He's got children and when i've seen him interviewed he certainly has a lovely warm self deprecating side as well as the whole curmudgeonly persona

OP posts:
TinyTimsGang · 11/12/2004 15:16

Yes, it'd have to be someone with a strong family life really and who'd be willing to share a bit about it, because that's what the programme is about I guess.

fisilhohoho · 11/12/2004 15:18

I thought Jenni Eclair was good. Like Jack Dee too - could be too cutting, though.

spacedonkey · 11/12/2004 15:19

aha I didn't hear Jenni Eclair, but can imagine she'd be good

OP posts:
Eulalia · 11/12/2004 16:16

I thought Tom Robinson was good... no-one will be the same as John Peel though of course. I think we have too much of Jonathan Ross on radio and TV at the moment.

Jenny Eclair was good but her voice is a bit squeaky when she reads out something long, she was fine with the chatty sections of the programme. Maybe it is time for a woman.

spacedonkey · 18/12/2004 11:36

i am now warming to tom robinson

did anyone hear his fantastic "brushing up on my german" joke this morning?

I think Linda Smith is very witty but not compassionate enough - Jack Dee is too cool IMO. I'd give the job to Graeme Garden.
