Would you overtake a hearse?

I've just followed a hearse (with coffin on board) for about 3 miles along an A road. The limit is 50 and the hearse was going about 35.

I couldn't believe the number of cars struggling to get past the hearse. Are people really SO BUSY that they cannot spare 5 extra minutes to sit behind a hearse and show a bit of respect? Or am I out of touch and is this an acceptable thing to do? I know if someone had overtaken my Mum's hearse it would have finished me off Sad.

Interested to hear your views.

when on the way to my Gran's funeral we had to follow the hearse down a stretch of dual carrage way. Even though we stayed at 40 ost drivers still stayed behind and those that went past went past slowly and saluted the hearse as they passed.

I remember being most touched at teh respect they showed.

In short no!

on the day of my nan's funeral, some guy pulled out right into the middle of our procession between the second and third cars. was he really so stupid that he didnt realise? fair enough it was going round an island so maybe it couldnt be helped but he had plenty of opportunities straight after this to pull into a side road, let us pass and pull back onto the same road again. i was bloody fuming, sitting in the third car trying so hard not to let rip with obscenities (sp?) tosser, now ive said it.

SueW, are you talking about Wilford Hill? My mum lives just across the road from there.

My colleagues mum died and we all went to the funeral in the boss's car. Once the family had gone off to wherever they were having their cup of tea (sorry don't know what that bit is called)the hearse did speed up to a normal speed for that road (presumably the cremation was later or the next day or something). Our boss overtook it anyway. I lost the one small shred of respect I ever had for the man.

Although I have a story about my friends late grandma's funeral. She was already reknowned as the speeding granny, and got stopped twice in her 80's for going too fast... On the day of her funeral, her hearse and procession was made late by slow traffic, so the HEARSE overtook a load of traffic to get past, topping about 50 at one point! In this instance the procession all fell about thinking "It's the way she would have wanted to go!"
