Would you overtake a hearse?

stickynote · 06/12/2004 12:22

I've just followed a hearse (with coffin on board) for about 3 miles along an A road. The limit is 50 and the hearse was going about 35.

I couldn't believe the number of cars struggling to get past the hearse. Are people really SO BUSY that they cannot spare 5 extra minutes to sit behind a hearse and show a bit of respect? Or am I out of touch and is this an acceptable thing to do? I know if someone had overtaken my Mum's hearse it would have finished me off Sad.

Interested to hear your views.

Gobbledigoose · 06/12/2004 12:26

Absolutely not. Frustrating as it might be if I was in a hurry (like going to pick up ds from nursery or something) - I just couldn't.

Momp · 06/12/2004 12:26

OMG NOOOOOOO

jabberwocky · 06/12/2004 12:27

Well i don't drive but no i wouldn't.

Donbean · 06/12/2004 12:30

We were talking about some thing similar at work yesterday. One of the girls went passed a funeral directors shop and they were putting Christmas decorations up. This then got the discussion going on whether or not it was appropriate for them to do this.
The discussion got pretty silly as we then went onto talk about whether or not they would have Christmas music on in the backgroung (lift type music) you know jingle bells and the like.
Its an interesting subject, what do you all think.
(sory, ive hyjacked your thread, sorry sorry sorry, )

MissYulie · 06/12/2004 12:30

Absolutely not. Respect for the deceased and those following. when my dad died I remember my aunt and her family accom[anied him home. I remeber so well my mother thanking her for bringin him home safe. I know it sounds weird as he was dead but it meant so much to her. Some people have no respect.

Donbean · 06/12/2004 12:31

Ignore this if its offensive, just a thought as we were talking about it for ages.

stickynote · 06/12/2004 12:31

That's OK, I've got my answer Smile.

stickynote - no, no, no definitely not. Never.

donbean - hmmm, tricky one, maybe decs in the reception (but subtle ones only), but prob not in the rooms families see their loved ones in, and prob no to the music...

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 06/12/2004 13:56

No I wouldn't overtake a hearse, but on the other hand, if the hearse was driving for 3 miles along an A road, I think it should have driven a little faster.

cranberryjampot · 06/12/2004 13:59

no to decs in funeral directors - maybe some winter floral displays but definitely should be understated and respectful

BadHair · 06/12/2004 13:59

Absolutely not. Although I did overtake one by accident on a roundabout years ago, and I've been overtaken by one doing at least 90mph (I was doing 80 and it hurtled past) up the M6. It had the "backseat passenger", flowers and everything.

NomDePlumPudding · 06/12/2004 14:00

I wouldn't, but DH probably would if he'd been following it patiently for 2+ miles

Thecattlearemerloting · 06/12/2004 14:04

No to overtaking (unless on a dual carriageway) and definitely NO, NO, NO to xmas decs. Winter flowers sound a great compromise.

aBeanInaManger · 06/12/2004 14:08

I wouldn't overtake, would probably think to myself that they should drive a bit faster though.

xmas decorations? maybe a tree with just white lights, definitely no tinsle type stuff or horrible baubles.

motherinfestivemood · 06/12/2004 14:10

I once did, accidentally, on holiday. In Sicily. Which is not a good place to realise you have overtaken a hearse...

Caligulights · 06/12/2004 14:19

MI Grin

You must have been terrified!

advocaatofthedevil · 06/12/2004 14:22

I would, depending on the circumstances. I wouldn't sit patiently behind one if I had to be somewhere and there was a safe opportunity to overtake but I wouldn't overtake one for the sheer hell of it.

advocaatofthedevil · 06/12/2004 14:23

But I certainly wouldn't do it in Sicily.
