Hi, does anyone know of any mother and baby housing units that would take 21 year old with a 2 year old?

What area of the country are you in?

Your best bet would be contacting your GP and local social services.

Goodread1 · 07/02/2023 20:03

Hi Op

Which part of uk are you 🤔at then?

I lived briefly (6 months ) at a mother and baby's home Unit in the very early 90s when I gave birth to my daughter

It was a vicarage in city of Cardiff,

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 20:07

@VargaV Hi, I live in London and neither of those would be an option for me actually. I have already had ss in the past definitely not trying to go through that again. Thanks tho

Hi Op

I agree your local social services will help arrange this act as go between that's what they did with me, all those years ago too.

Also agree that Dr could support help here in this situation too

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 20:09

@Goodread1 Hi, I'm in London and I have lived in one before as well but was taken out I didn't have a choice so I am not sure now if I wanted to go back if they'd take me.. Thanks though

You would need to contact your local council housing department but the places are generally allocated via social services so if you are set on not having them involved you are very unlikely to get a place.

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 20:12

@Goodread1 That's all useful but i'm not sure either would help as I am in temporary accommodation.. they'd probably say why you want to leave to go to a mother and baby unit if you are in temporary..

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 20:14

@POTC Yeah I see what you mean but Is it really necessary having them involved? Couldn't like a health visitor help with this maybe?

Hi Op

I was thinking along same lines too, I think contacting a Health visitor via Dr surgery either new mums clinic or just asking for a referral in some way ,

I think the mother and baby's unit could be useful too

Goodread1 · 07/02/2023 20:26

Oops sorry Op

I will get back to you about link

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 20:28

@Goodread1 Thanks for your help I guess it's worth a shot to give my hv a call tomorrow and see what she might say. Hopefully she can help with this.

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 20:37

@Goodread1 Thanks for the link. I had actually had a look earlier today on that website but that's the type of mother and baby unit that's mental health specialised. I'm looking for a housing type of mother and baby unit which is the one I had originally been at. And I think that one you sent only accepts children up to 24 months old not sure. But thanks anyway

Have you looked on your local YWCA website?
Ywca run supported housing for young parents where I live but we're up in Yorkshire. They might do similar in your area?

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 20:48

@fairgame84 Hi, thanks for that. I haven't heard of that one before and had a bit of a look now it looks really interesting. Do you know if they have like a certain criteria people have to follow to be able to get in and if I would have to be referred or can I simply self refer?

For our local one the referral has to be via health visitor, early help worker or social worker. You have to be eligible to be on the housing register for the local council to apply for a place as well so you'd need to be facing homelessness or sofa surfing and have a local connection eg family or job in the area.

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 20:58

@fairgame84 thanks for replying. considering all that then I sure won't be able to get in that actually because i'm not facing homelessness.. Thanks anyway tho

It's worth a phone call though as each one might have different criteria so your local one might not be the same.
Even if you can't get a placement, they might be able to offer outreach support if that's what you're looking for.

If you're in temporary accommodation that would usually mean you are classed as homeless

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 21:11

@fairgame84 you're right i'll give that a try.

suchamessughh · 07/02/2023 21:12

@POTC not in lambeth no you ain't considered homeless. at least I never heard of that.

Hi Op

I was just wondering, thinking 🤔 that getting in touch with a Political local councillors in your area,

Having a list of them from Gov. uk website or just visting your nearest council hub centre to ,find out about a list,(or been giving relevant directions to find out,

see about them,

supporting finding a mother and babys accommodation longer term,

After all Political Councillors and MPs roles are Public servants of the people who elect them,

Also just a random thought would your local citizens bureau be able to help you in regard of this ?

Just wondering would Salvation Army charity be able to help maybe?
