Would you be scared to walk through a graveyard in the dark?

And if you were scared, would you do it anyway?

When I get back to our village late at night after working away I have to take a short cut through the churchyard (unless I go the long way round on an unlit road, which is probably more dangerous in traffic terms).

It is pitch black and very spooky. The worst part is that very occasionally they lock the gate at the far end of it and my biggest fear is that I will get to the gate and find it locked so I'll have to decide whether to attempt to climb over or go back.

Am I brave for doing this or a wimp for being scared in the first place?

ds isn't in the church...the churchyard is on the way...

MaryAnnSingleton · 07/02/2008 15:27

am not afraid, probably as we grew up playing in a graveyard attached to our primary school

MrsMattie · 07/02/2008 15:28

I'm scared of the dark, full stop. Pathetic, really.

QuintessentialShadow · 07/02/2008 15:31

MaryAnn, funny really, the Mayor recently came to visit the school and was amazed to see the children playing happily among the tombstones!

Oenophile · 07/02/2008 15:37

I'm not scared of ghosts for they don't exist: the dead are just dead, in the way leaves that have left the tree are dead, harmless and finished.

It's possible we have an extra fear of graveyards because they are commonly used in horror films and we now link them subconsciously with unpleasant and frightening things.

Not nice to walk anywhere late at night alone in the dark though (I'm thinking of human threats now) so I do think you're brave, yes!

not really but when on holiday in bembridge, isle of wight we took a twilight stroll.

we passed the graveyard and looked in, about five or six women were in there cleaning the headstones.

they all really glared at us with expressionless faces. it shook us up.

"It's possible we have an extra fear of graveyards because they are commonly used in horror films and we now link them subconsciously with unpleasant and frightening things. "

Oh that's a very good point. I am thinking of the bit at the end of Carrie where the friend is kneeling over her grave and then a hand comes out....

lol, we couldn't even find a pub and really needed a drink after that.

bunnyhunny · 07/02/2008 15:55

the graveyard in the dark wouldnt bother me, but the possibilty of the gate being locked would

I'm pretty sure you could out run a zombie, but if the gate was locked at the end...

nappynoonoo · 07/02/2008 15:56

OMG Mymeems I do that too, especially as our loft hatch is above our bedroom door in the hall and it freaks me out no end.

When I was younger I used to bike through a graveyard to get home after being out with my friends. One night the gate at the other end was locked and I turned round to go back to the other gate and that was locked too. This being before mobile phones were small and cheap, I stood at the gate and kept shouting 'help'. By the time I was 'rescued' I had mascara running down my cheeks and a big rip in my jeans where I had attempted to climb over the fence after abandoning my bike.
All very scary I was only about 14 at the time.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 07/02/2008 15:57

Well the worry would be finding the gate was locked at the other end and turning round to go back to the entrance and then finding THAT gate was now locked as well.....

I used to be scared of axe murderers etc in dark graveyards / woods / the heath near us, until dh sagely pointed out that it is unlikely that they will be hanging around in the dark in a completely isolated place until someone walks by.

nappynoonoo · 07/02/2008 16:01

lol Kathy

expatinscotland · 07/02/2008 16:03

No

But you couldn't pay me money to go into that decrepit abandoned care home a couple of villages away because it doesn't feel good even during the day.

The biggest threat in graveyards are drunk yob teens.

Oh, and I wouldn't wear sandals because the other big threat is used needles.

FoghornLeghorn · 07/02/2008 16:06

I am a great big pansy so yes I would be absolutely terrified. I don't know if I would be more scared of the eeriness of it all or the thought of some stark raving lonatic hiding behind the headstones to get me !

Kathyis6incheshigh · 07/02/2008 16:07

Well I'm glad Expat's not scared, because she believes in ghosts. I will also be thinking of Fio 'evryone there is dead fgs'

It's true Expat, some places that you would not expect to be creepy just are, while others that ought to be scary feel quite benign.

The dead can't hurt you

But a lurking malingerer with a sense of the dramatic can.

expatinscotland · 07/02/2008 17:26

I've been through loads of graveyards at night - as a drunken teen , nothing sinister happened other than a couple of people who were wearing flimsy sandals coming into contact with used needles.

Really, they're not scary places.

nannyL · 07/02/2008 18:44

it wouldnt bother me in the slightest

nannyL · 07/02/2008 18:46

.... but then i stay alone in the hosue i work in, which also has a (friendly) ghost, and that doesnt bother me in the slightest either

Tortington · 07/02/2008 18:47

only incase i was robbed or raped or beaen up

ALMummy · 07/02/2008 18:48

No, NO, NOOOOOOO!!!!!
