I always have fake would never buy a real one. No real reason except my mum always had fake and real ones just don't look right to me!?

AMerryScot · 05/12/2004 20:26

I had a real Christmas tree completely kill my year old vacuum cleaner a few years ago. I think this is worse for the environment than a fake tree that might last about 10 or 15 years.

littledrummerbird · 05/12/2004 20:27

I've had a fake tree for the past 4 years, and it is also pre-lit. Gotta say that it is sooo easy to put up and decorate, looks great the whole time it's up, and there's no huge mess after. I don't take it apart, just put a sheet over/around it, and store it until the next year. Must admit though that I have some pine scented candles that I burn! Grin

happymerryberries · 05/12/2004 20:30

Well I eat meat and I have a fake tree.

motherinfestivemood · 05/12/2004 20:32

I am deeply embarrassed about the naff fake tree DP bought, but feel there are worse things in life, really.

Former vegetarian, organic-type Guardianista.

Oh and my fake tree is now in its 11th year and is still looking great. At this rate I can see it lasting at least another 20 years. If you ballance that with the fuel used to transport real trees to the house and then to be recycled, the fertilisers used in their growth, the fact that very little else growns in a fir forest so soil errosrion is common once they are cut down etc I don't think there is a lot in it eco-wise. Unless, of course you buy a tree with roots and keep it alive from year to year. That is the best, I would think.

And there is little advantage in the CO2 taken up by the tree as it is releaced back into the atmosphere when the tree is burned/allowed to rot.

Kaysleighbells · 05/12/2004 20:36

We have a fake one but it has to be VERY bushy and dense. Don't like sparse fake ones at all.

suedonim · 05/12/2004 20:38

We have a real tree in the main room but have an artificial one in the dining room. But artifical has to look artifical for me ie white or pink or orange, not green. Btw, the business up the road grows Xmas trees. I don't think it's environamentally unsound - the land is too poor for growing anything else and they get an income out of it.

albosmum · 05/12/2004 20:38

I am veggie and have a fake treee looks naff -but it is not to do with being a veggie but to do with ease etc

codswallop · 05/12/2004 20:39

the veggie thing was tongue in cheek!

Never??? Wot, u b tongue in cheek??? Grin

My fake is great and looks very realistic. It has also saved me a fortune over the years and so much hassle. Just send the man up into the attic to fetch it. Sorted!

hoxtonturkey · 05/12/2004 20:44

real, every time.

codswallop · 05/12/2004 20:46

naffer than the naffiest naff-naff Wink

but then again naff can be quite kitsch and up-to-the-minute can't it?

has to be real for me though

xmashampermunker · 05/12/2004 20:50

I LOVE the smell of real trees. But I fear it will be fake for us this Xmas. We'll see...

fisilhohoho · 05/12/2004 20:54

DP is veggie and anti-real tree. I can't quite get his logic, but it wasn't an issue I could get too passionate about, so fake tree it is. I made one condition - that if we have to have a fake one, then it has to be gloriously and outrageously fake. So we have a white and silver fibreoptic one that glows purple and blue. Not sure I'd cope with a "wannabe" fake!

I know

happymerryberries · 05/12/2004 20:57

TBH my reasons for a fake come down to it is easier. What are your dh's objections fisil? I'm just nosy.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 05/12/2004 21:58

Real Christmas trees make me itch !

princessinapeartree · 05/12/2004 22:01

naff naff naff

xmas is about the smell of pine trees and that excruciating feeling of a pineneedle burrowing under your kneecap as you place the presents under the tree.
might as well be easter otherwise!

merrymarthamoo · 05/12/2004 22:05

Ours is fake and a bone of contention between dh and I. I want a real one - we never had a real one when I was a child, we had a silver one with branches that stuck out perpendicular to the "trunk". He says real ones are not environmentally friendly, drop needles, don't last as well blah blah blah and he will not budge. So, yet again, we have our increasingly bedraggled looking, listing drunkenly to one side, fake one. I have some lovely things on it though....

I have managed to obtain from dh an undertaking, however, that come the January sales, we will go out and purchase a new, and better fake tree. I am still a bit pouty about it, but less so now.

Gobbledigoose · 05/12/2004 22:08

Got an 8ft fake one and it's gorgeous - bought a really expensive one from John Lewis and it's really bushy. Real ones have a fab smell, there's no denying it, and we used to love it as kids going to get a real one but I'm afraid it's just not practical and with so much else to do, the fake on is just easier.

Put it up today and it looks spectacular.

dawniejinglebellbop1 · 05/12/2004 22:10

Mine is fake but it does look very real - cost an absolute fortune when I bought it about 8 years ago but has stood the test of time very well and has worked out very cheap in the long run. Christ I sound like Ebeneezer Blush

ThomCatsAreNotJustForXmas · 05/12/2004 22:14

Fake for me. Done real ones for years but pine needles and Lottie aren't compatible. Our fake one looks fab and it's much less grief packing it up in the loft that getting rid of a dead tree that's dropped it's needles all over the carpet.
