Hmm - nothing beats the smell of a real tree, but:

  1. You will still be picking up needles in July
  2. They are a nightmare (and a danger) with young ones around
  3. Not environmentally sound
  4. A lot more hassle than just getting an artificial one out of the loft
  5. There are some nice artificial ones about - I am quite fond of ours.
  6. It doesn't hurt putting decorations on an artificial one!
MarsselectionboxLady · 05/12/2004 20:09

naff!

KateandtheElves · 05/12/2004 20:09

Neither.

(I mean, they're not naff but they're not necessary either.)

I once read a story about a christmas tree who was left in the cold to die at the end of Christmas. I felt so sad that I vowed never to buy a real tree again.

Eco wise, fake trees still use oil and metal resources, and at least real trees can be recycled. What happens to fake trees when they are no longer wanted - landfilled and never biodegrade.

Am not a vegetarian BTW.

KateandtheElves · 05/12/2004 20:13

Miaow, to answer your points.

  1. All you have to do is vacuum under the tree, takes about 10 secs.
  2. Why are they any more dangerous than fake trees?
  3. I don't really know about this, but I do know that our town collects them after Christmas to be recycled.
  4. Less hassle IME. I picked one out and they delivered it and put it up in the stand.
  5. I'll give you this one. Grin
  6. I've never been injured by either.

All out, super-fake, no pretense of being real trees are ok. But otherwise a bit naff.

We will have a real one (always have, always will!). Miaou, I think they're farmed and grow quickly, so it's not too bad for the environment.

KateandtheElves · 05/12/2004 20:14

And Coddy, I don't think I'm on the fence. I don't think they're naff (although they can be of course) but I prefer real trees.

codswallop · 05/12/2004 20:15

It was a nice fence though

JoolsTide · 05/12/2004 20:15

we always used to have a real one about 7' - nightmare to get home - but lovely smell and all that - but what a nightmare afterwards - all the bloody needles (even the ones that say 'no drop' well they bloody do!)

so we bought a fake (7') it looks lovely but its a nightmare to put together and take apart - I'm not bothering this year I'll just put my garland over the fireplace and thats it!

codswallop · 05/12/2004 20:15

I quite like ( cowers) those white fake ones

Grin

A warm, sunny fence of course.

JanH · 05/12/2004 20:15

My MIL has one of those little white table-top trees, she's had it at least 20 years, the decorations are probably older and she folds it up with them on and tinselly bits are dropping off. It's so naff it's indescribable (but sweet in a dotty MIL sort of way).

KateandtheElves · 05/12/2004 20:15

Now that's naff!

codswallop · 05/12/2004 20:17

they look stylish in john lewis!!
what about ehe pre lit ones?

OP posts:
KateandtheElves · 05/12/2004 20:18

Can't say I've seen them in John Lewis.
