Two things. We were in a shop yesterday buying dd a bag of crisps (had been very good at the shoe shop) and the saleswoman complimented me on her nice manners (smug mummy!) And this morning ds (almost 16 months) walked right across the kitchen for the first time, holding a fridge magnet in each hand. AT LAST!

I'm feeling proud of my older children. Two weeks ago we heard that a dear friend of ours in the UK was terminally ill and he subsequently died six days later. Without any prompting from us, (out of the loop in Indonesia) Ds2 and Dd1 went to the funeral on our behalf and Ds1, who lives in LA, arranged for flowers to be sent to our friend's widow. One of those moments when you realise it has all been worthwhile!

Bursting at the seams! My dd, 14, has exceeded all expectations in her SATS. So thrilled I could cry, she has struggled a bit at school this year, her Dad adn me split up and we have moved house three times, but she has done brilliantly, much better than all her teachers thought she would! Yippee!!

Wonderful news, you have every right to be proud!

DS2, who's 10, had 4 top teeth out today - baby canines and premolars - making space for orthodontics. He had to have injections in his gums at the front, both sides, and then in the roof of his mouth, both sides, and he didn't squirm or squeak, but he was holding a tissue in his lap and his knuckles were white!

The actual extractions were a doddle after that and the dentist was very pleased with him.

OTOH he has just appeared to show me his hugely swollen fat lip - despite being told by the dentist and me, several times, not to touch or bite it while it's numb, he has obviously being rubbing it or something and now looks as if he's gone a round or two with Lennox Lewis.

JanH, well done him, we must be shadowing each other, I posted a similar thing on Proud 2!

jan what a brave boy you have. All those shopping trips to Lidl must have toughened him up

janh · 13/08/2003 20:25

Thanks, fio and lou - yes, he is well 'ard these days!

lou, I just went and searched for your account, I am v v impressed with your 2 - they are so little to have gone through all that! I know you mentioned it with ref to not taking them to Gatwick in the heat but I didn't realise what they had been through - they really deserved their rewards! Has DS1 healed up now? What else will DD2 have to have done?

lou33 · 13/08/2003 20:49

Janh, thanks for asking. His teeth are fine now, just the broken arm to contend with! Dd2 is going back in december, then they will have another look and see if the tooth is worth keeping. She has always had trouble with it , so I guess it depends how much has decayed. She doesn't seem to be in any pain atm though.
