Grew up in a DM household so now read Independent during the week, Guardian on Sat and Observer on Sunday! But....also read the DM every day as my parents buy it. I like to get a balance!

And yes, I probably do live up to a Guardianista stereotype in many ways. I like to play the 'Daily Mail Sweepstake' - you have to bet how many DM pages you can read before you lose the will to live.

Weirdly enough I grew up with Guardian reading parents and now read the Times. Weird because I'm far more left-wing than my parents and always have been. I do know that Murdoch is the devil incarnate, but I just like a lot of the columnists in the Times, and I really prefer Times 2 to the Guardian equivalent. I also loathe some Times columnists and hate their views, but I quite like disagreeing with them anyway, I think it's good for me

Well.......at home my mum and dad have the Telegraph. This is because the sport section in there is better, according to my dad (coverage of cricket being important ).

And so I have got used to the Saturday Telegraph with all its sections. We generally get a paper only on Saturdays, although DH gets a paper every day.

He reads the Guardian. I am starting to feel that my allegiences are veering more towards the Guardian and I do read it sometimes when he brings it home.

Gobbledigoose · 03/12/2004 19:20

Read the paper? Like when?

Gobbledigoose · 03/12/2004 19:21

Only one I read is my local one cos I like to see if there's anyone in it I know!

Otherwise, I get The Times headlines delivered to my email account in the mornings.

littleweed · 03/12/2004 20:45

shoot me down in flames but in teh week I read the mail? why? I don't like red tops - don't really want to see topless women adn don't like articles full of one syllable words adn very short senteneces. don't like broadsheets - a pain to unfold, adn if I'm honest I quite like knowing if Liz Hurley has had a lip job, adn clebrity gosip - even if it is dressed up to be 'shocking' adn writeen about by someone ressembling a diapproving maiden aunt. I like to think I'm intelligent enough to disregard al teh women hating claptrap it comes out with adn just read it with a very open mind. also it takes me longet to read than teh telegraph so better value for money.
read teh telegraph on saturdays and times on a sunday if that redeems me at all!

hana · 04/12/2004 02:25

The Metro sadly.....yesterday's news. It's what DH brings home!!
And always the Times on Sunday

winnie1 · 04/12/2004 03:30

The Guardian & The Observer. Have tried several times to wean myself off The Guardian as it can drive me insane but I have always failed miserably. Parents bought right wing tabloids so it was inevitable imo... I like the Independent and sometimes read The Times. Do like The Sunday Times now but haven't time to read more than one Sunday paper... although given the chance I would probably read them all. I love newspapers. How sad is that?

NotQuiteCockney · 04/12/2004 04:58

I have a t-shirt saying "hated by the Daily Mail". Obviously read the Guardian/Observer on the weekend, and fit the stereotype. Breastfed DS1 to 18 months, bicycle everywhere, organic veg, childcare co-op.

I only allow myself windfall red tops - won't buy them, but am happy (and shaking with mirth/fury) to read them if I find them somewhere.

Oh, and Guardian is apparently not going tabloid, but midi, like Le Monde. Who knows though, all the other papers have changed their minds so much.

NoMoomAtTheInn · 04/12/2004 07:31

NQC - lol at 'windfall red tops'. Xh used to buy the Sun or the Mirror at the weekend and I'd rant for a few minutes about not wanting those rags in my house...and then sneak a good old gawp as I put them out for the rubbish!

Gobbledigoose · 04/12/2004 08:12

Just out of interest, why are we all so snobby about papers?

Quite a few people I know - intelligent, professional types, read the papers you'd expect (Guardian, Independent, Times etc) but at weekends always by NOW too for entertainment value.

DH often buys The Sun, apparently for the sport (though I'm sure the tits on page 3 help it go down too ) and he reads the problem page for a laugh! He doesn't buy it for world news - he gets that from elsewhere and knows far more about current affairs and all the history behind stuff than I do.

So I don't think we should judge anyone by the paper they read. Not saying anyone here does but I have seen it on other threads.

hunny · 04/12/2004 08:14

Moved to Germany this year - our local shop sells the Indie and the Guardian (European versions) - much prefer the Guardian as it has much more local UK news (even in the European version) but I also read the Indie online as they have some good interviews. Also read the Mirror online to catch up on celeb gossip.

Tinker · 04/12/2004 14:34

Not so much snobby about papers but won't buy any Murdoch rags. Won't buy other red tops since don't see how I can criticise the coverage of, say, Denise Fergus' grief being expolited/paedophiles being 'named and shamed' if I also buy the paper and supply the demand for such garbage. Mail and Express too xenophopic and full of hate. Have a friend who buys the Mail for 'know your enemy' reasons. Of course, I'll always read it when he leaves it here after babysitting

Tinker · 04/12/2004 14:36

BIG downside in Indie going tabloid size is I can't use it for drawing my fire any more . Thought I would be in a minority about this but there is actually correspondence going on in the Letters page about just such a crisis.

SilentBite · 04/12/2004 14:37

Guardian

Used to read the Indy but the sport is tooooo crap!

Sunday Times

Because I can't get a paper every day and because it takes me a whole week to read it anyway!

I tend to read it in the same order too: Back page of News Review first, followed by rest of News review, then Style, Magazine, Home, Main section then Culture (books only). Then if I'm bored I read Ecosse and Travel. Anyone else read theirs in a particular order?

And I am now particularly attached to the ST because that was where I heard about you lovely lot...

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 04/12/2004 14:55

Snap MiaowyChristmas, although the Style section isn't really my thing. I read the ST too (mainly because dh wants it) and start with the Review, followed by Main section, magazine, culture section (book reviews) and possible Travel and Homes. The rest is pretty boring but dh reads the business and money sections (like the true man he is!)

MiaouyChristmas · 04/12/2004 14:59

the only reason why I read the Style section Lonelymum is because I like a good laugh!!!

ItllBeLonelymumThisChristmas · 04/12/2004 15:02

No it has gone beyond that for me. I just can't believe the stuff in it. What is that Vanessa Wilde (is that her name?) column about? It just doesn't appeal TBH.

joashiningstar · 04/12/2004 15:41

Guardian on the week
Observer on Sundays

have relatives that read Ths Sun (blleeerrrgghhh) absolutely refuse to let anyone bring things like the 'Sun' into my house - a girls got to have some principals you know .

zebra · 04/12/2004 15:42

Am very amazed by mothers who find time to read newspapers.
