what age would you let your daughter have her ears pierced?

My dd is nearly 7 and apparently "all" the girls in her class have their ears pierced. (I don't believe her). She's desperate to have hers done now. I think she should be about 12 or older.
What do others think?

I got my ears pierced 10 days short of my 8th birthday.

My dd is 7 and I know that one girl in her class has hers done, don't know about any others. but she doesn't want her ears done and never mentions it.

We were in Claires Accessories one day and there was a girl sitting waiting to get her ears done so we waited to watch and dd declared afterwards that she never wants her ears pierced. I think she'll probably change her mind though when she's older. I'll be happy for her to gets hers done when she's about 11 or 12 if she wants.

My mum got her ears pierced at the age of 37 for her cousins wedding.

It was 16 for me and in fact i waited until i was 17. i'd be ok with ds having his done at 16, tho preferably only one ear or an eyebrow or a nose piercing. but at that age presumably he can do what he likes.

My parents did mine when I was about 5/6 months apparently (well at least I don't remember the pain!). No not liberal Hippies but Italians, who believe that wearing gold is lucky. My dd was given several pairs of tiny gold earrings by several Italians when she was born but must say that I haven't had her ears done. I do wonder if I am now allergic to nickel because basically I have been wearing earrings for so long (the gold-wearing stopped very early on and were swapped for cheap 'fashion' ones).

I'll do my DDs when she is 5/6. I had mine done when I was 6 and that was fine.

Obviously I will ask her if she wants it done, and if she doesn't I will wait! I remember very clearly wanting to have my ears done, and actually having it done and it fine. I adored wearing earrings as a child and still do.

have discussed this many times with dh. think around the age of 12 would be ok, in the summer holidays (start of) so they have a chance to heal a bit b4 schools starts again. any other body piercings (as long as not genital areas) 16, tattoos at 18. but thats only if they want them done.

ThomCatsAreNotJustForXmas · 03/12/2004 23:32

Well I was 7 when I had mine done but there is no way Lottie is having hers done at 7, no way. More like 14 tbh, will review that, pending begging and pleading and tears when she is 10 but right now I stand my 14 years.

hercyulelog · 04/12/2004 15:01

I will say 16 but if really wanted will give in at 13. My mum did the same for me. I cant understand why you would do it at primary age or younger.

Ds would def have to be 16.

13 if SHE pushed. I had to wait till 12 or 13. My sister ripped hers with hoops as a teen and needed stitches and then got an infected nose ring so i would NOT allow that risk as a younger child.
Just don't see the point at all

My sister works in a shop where they do babies!

MrsBigDrumsADrumming · 04/12/2004 15:13

I've got a Spanish friend and she told me that it's the norm to have babies ears done literally at or straight after birth! When I was in Madrid this summer I actually saw a little girl, maybe 3 months old if that with HUGE diamong studs!

I was 15 when I had my ears pierced and the first lot went horribly wrong as it got infected. Just tell your dd what happened to me and that should put her off... my ear lobes got pussy and my father had to cut them at the back to relieve the pain! I didn't even feel the cut, that's how painful they were to begin with.
A year later I had my ears pierced again and this time it went o.k.

Don't know what age exactly I'll make dd wait till, but probably the longer the better. My friend's older girl in Israel just summoned the chutspe (however that is spelled ) to have her ears pierced and all went well.

As for other piercings... definitely 18!

I told my girls that they are allowed to have theirs done at 13. DD1 is 17 and waited untill she was 15. DD2 is nearly 15 and is scared of needles so isn't going to have hers done! DD3 is nearly 13 but hasn't said anything yet.
I work in A nursery and several little girls have had their ears pieced I personally dont like this. This is because its not safe only the other day a 4 year old got her ear ring tangled in one of the dressing up dresses.we

i imagine about 12 if she asks. i remember begging my mother when i was about 7, i think i was about 10 when she allowed me to have it done. she wasnt too pleased however when i came home at 14 with two more and then again at 15 with another two! (which i did myself, ouch!) ive got two holes in each ear now and one at the top but i havent worn earrings for a long time so i imagine the top one has healed up. i had my first tattoo done at 17 but she wasnt too bad about it when i confessed as it was very small and on my hip, where it cant be seen. theres no way she would have permitted it though if i'd have asked first!

tatt · 06/12/2004 05:41

wouldn't let mine have hers done while I could still stop her. However she's a wimp about pain and doesn't want it done now she understands what is involved. It probably helps that one of her friends has persistent infections, despite treating her ears every day. The friend, however, loves her earrings so much she puts up with the infections instead of letting her ears heal. My son things such things are silly but when he's older I'd be even less likely to allow him to have it done as he's better at sport.

There are stick on earrings if they really want something on their ears.
