DS1 has toothache!!!! Pain killer advice please

Been sent home from school with toothache
And the dentist can't see him but will leave a prescription to pick up for anti biotics, as she saw him on Monday and now thinks it might be an infection.

He has had Nurofen and is still crying in pain, he is 11 and I don't know if he might need an adult painkiller???? Any advice.

Can take paracetamol too. Calpol do melts which he can chew or just melt on his tongue if the idea of vast quantities of pink gloop is too much for him.

Kimi · 24/01/2008 12:19

Calpol and Nuofen then.

I let my dd have proper paracetamol for 12 and over and she's 11. That was on GP advice for really bad migraine.

He could try swilling soluble para/ aspirin round his mouth for toothache as well

gigglewitch · 24/01/2008 12:20

If he is a good size and weight for his age, then possibly! most adult ones say from 12 yrs but that is going on the very safe side. I have to say if he were mine I'd be tempted to give him grown-up paracetamol, perhaps soluble so they are easier to swallow and get to work quickly, but I'd also be tempted to head for the chemist with him if possible and ask the pharmacist - armed with his height and weight info.

Kimi · 24/01/2008 12:23

He is 5 feet 3 and umm solid shall we say.
I think I might try an adult paracetamol.

If he's 5'3 and 'solid, he sounds very like me and I take lots of painkillers!

He will be fine but if in doubt, ring your GP.

gigglewitch · 24/01/2008 12:26

Assuming he is having both nurofen and paracetamol, which can be taken together as u know, just make sure that he drinks plenty of juice or he might (paradoxically) end up with a headache

Kimi · 24/01/2008 12:30

Make that 5 feet (never been good at hight) but still a good height and weight I think, not a small for his age child.

We have brushed teeth, mouth washed and now I am looking for the paracetamol.

God I think toothache is the worst type of pain.

Ring the pharmacist at your local chemist - they will tell you what he can have based on his age and weight. Clove oil is also supposed to be good to rub on and can be used as well as pain killers.

Kimi · 24/01/2008 12:36

Only got bloody disprol is that ok

OP posts:
Wisteria · 24/01/2008 12:38

tell him to swill it round the bad tooth for as long as possible then swallow it - poor love, it's horrid.

Jennster · 24/01/2008 12:42

Aspirin not to be taken by under 16 not 12, and also not if already taking nurofen as both are Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatories.

Soluble Paracetamol swilled round mouth won't do much (it's the anti inflam properties of aspirin that they say you can do that) but obviously you can swallow it!

Disprol is USUALLY paracetamol, check the ingredients.

Kimi · 24/01/2008 12:53

Do not exceed stated dose. Immediate medical advice should be sought in the event of overdose, even if you feel well because of the risk of delayed serious liver damage. Do not take with other products containing paracetamol.

Last had calpol at 7.30 am then Nurofen at mid day.

He has cried himself to sleep.

I will pick up the anti biotics and speak to the pharmacist when I pick up DS2

Hope feels better soon kimi

Kimi · 24/01/2008 16:21

ot penicillin now, pharmacist said not to give him adult pain killers, but to give the calpol and nuofen together.
I hope they have a cancellation tomorrow and can see him, although if it is an infection they can not do any thing till it is better.

Poor little soul, nothing worse then seeing your children in pain is there

Don't know how he got an infection as tooth brush is new, lots of mouth wash etc..

Might be in for a long night me thinks

Thank you I will look for some.

He looks so sad bless him.

OP posts:
Jennster · 24/01/2008 16:36

It's oil of cloves lol and think they might have changed the age of the co-codamol, but bear in mind it has a full dose of paracetamol in it so leave 4 hours between doses and no more than 4 doses in 24 hours

Jennster · 24/01/2008 16:37
