Hi Everyone, Can someone tell me what it means when it says mumsnet has saved my preferences.

I went to the area where you can ask them not to publish your posts or use them in anyway and I clicked not to but I also clicked the thing at the bottom that say SAVE MY PREVENCES. What does that mean? There wasnt anywhere else to click to send my request. Thanks.

Just a warning, be careful if you do take the one that delays your period. It was after taking that that I became pregnant. Must have altered my cycle a bit!

Rhubarb · 12/11/2002 14:56

I thought getting sterilised stopped your periods? I was thinking about that at one point. I should see another GP, she was just the only one I could see on that day. Definitely if something else comes up, I will plan in advance and get some tabs if my period is due. I have been told about the coil, but don't fancy anyone else messing about with me down there. It's bad enough when I try tampons anyway, psychologically I might as well have a horse up there! Ooh, bad image that! Better leave it there!

Alibubbles · 12/11/2002 16:05

Sterilisation doesn't stop your periods, you still ovulate, and if you are unfortunate you can then suffer from "mittleshmertz"( SP!!) which is ovulation pain. I do and it is excruciating, it lasts about 4 hours, and is one sided. Sopmetimes they get heavier too, thery don't tell you these things, or about the failaure rate but that's another story.

I'm looking forward to the day my periods stop!

janh · 12/11/2002 19:55

Well, Alibubbles, that is a good day - up to a point - I was sterilised 9 years ago, when DS2 was born (C-section), and my periods got heavier and heavier until I was a major flood alert for 3-4 days out of 26.

Then just under 2 years ago I started chemo which knocked out my ovaries after one month - no more periods BUT hot flushes instead and I can't have HRT! (But I can take progestogen which does fend them off quite well and I must admit that not having periods is a huge relief!)

Rhubarb, darling, coils are tiny compared with tampons (never mind horses, you rude thing!), you would really hardly notice one, honest!

Lindy · 12/11/2002 20:19

Alibubbles (& janh) - sorry to change the subject slightly but you kindly gave me some advice about sterilisation a few weeks ago; I am booked to see the consultant on Friday. However, your comments about heavy periods really worry me - I have never (& I know I am very lucky) had a heavy period in my life, don't ever get PMT, in fact never even 'know' if I am due to have a period - so how likely is sterlisation to change that, in your opionions?

Thanks in advance.

Rhubarb · 12/11/2002 20:39

Blimey, that's me put right off sterilisation! The coil doesn't sound too bad, but as I'm still suffering the effects of that injection contraception (hence the really heavy periods), I'm going to wait until all artifical hormones are completely out of my system before I try something else. If I carry on like this I'll be a walking contraception encyclopaedia!

janh · 12/11/2002 20:54

grrr, Lindy, just wrote you a long reply and AOL cut me off...

Anyway, the gist was, I think my side-effects were down to age as much as the sterilisation - I was 42 when I had it done and going downhill towards the perimenopause, plus I had had 4 children - if you are younger and have had fewer childen then you are in an entirely different situation.

Ask your consultant anyway - good luck!

lou33 · 12/11/2002 20:58

Lindy I have found that my periods are slightly heavier for the first day then it's all as normal. I was sterilised last december and I feel very liberated!

Alibubbles · 12/11/2002 21:11

I think what janh says about youth has a lot to do with it as well. If I think about it my heavy periods did start about 4 years ago the peri menopause.
I am now 44 (45 on Friday!) and was sterilised at 30 and again at 34, but it is the best thing I ever did. The only problem I have is trying to remember when my period is due so I can plan if going on hols etc.

My friend was done last year (age 36) and has not had any problems, my mother was done at 40 and didn't have any problems.

I had to have a GA both times, I wanted it done under sedation and a local 2nd time, but the consultant said it was possible he would have to remove my fallopian tubes to make sure it worked this time. I have three clips one side and two the other, I look like a washing line inside!

Go ahead, you won't regret it!

Hi There everyone.....Im due to have a period next week and sometimes I go 24 days (which will be fine in time for my holiday as I will have finished by the time I go away) but sometimes I go 28 days which will interupt my holiday . What I would like to know is if I risk not taking Norethisterone and I happen to come on on the 28th day will it stop my bleeding more or less straight away. I would be so grateful for some advice...Thanks xx Michelle
