Hi Everyone, Can someone tell me what it means when it says mumsnet has saved my preferences.

I went to the area where you can ask them not to publish your posts or use them in anyway and I clicked not to but I also clicked the thing at the bottom that say SAVE MY PREVENCES. What does that mean? There wasnt anywhere else to click to send my request. Thanks.

threeangels this means that the site has recorded the details you have entered and the options you have chosen.

threeangels · 04/11/2002 19:56

Thanks SimonHoward. Does this mean my posts will automatically become sealed from publishing or is there something else I need to do? I do appreciate your help.

OP posts:
SimonHoward · 05/11/2002 05:48

They should be sealed as that is the message I got when I changed my preferences to not print anything I say.

Azzie · 05/11/2002 05:52

What are you doing up at this time in the morning Simon? Thought I was the only one who got up early and sneaked time online .

SimonHoward · 05/11/2002 19:47

Azzie

Unfortunately I was up at 05:30 to get ready for work as I am doing 12 hour shifts starting at 07:00 currently.

And hating it big time.

URGENT QUICK QUESTION!!! I am due to go to a ball tomorrow evening, the first one I have ever been to. I have bought the most beautiful dress for it, and have been doing preparations for ages. dd is off to her grandma's to stay overnight so a lovely romantic evening was in order. However, would you believe it but I started my period just this morning! I was due to start last Saturday, which would have been ok, but because I started today, it means tomorrow it will be particularly heavy, especially at night, and I really do have heavy periods!

Now a while ago my GP gave me some tablets called Duphaston, to stop my bleeding as I had been bleeding for four weeks (due to mini-pill which I am no longer on). As it happens I never took them. But now I am very tempted to take them if it will stop me from bleeding. I have looked them up on Netdoctor and there doesn't appear to be any adverse side-effects, but then it doesn't give any info on using them to stop a period!

I haven't taken one yet, but will do this afternoon. I just want to know if anyone else has done this, and do you think it will be ok to do just this once. I really don't want the evening to be ruined by me nipping off the toilets every 2 minutes, wearing what will amount to a nappy (no kidding) and not being able to drink (I end up fainting or being violently sick when on a period if I drink a little too much). Too much preparation has gone into this night for it to be spoilt now. So all opinions welcome, what should I do?

janh · 06/11/2002 10:15

Oh, Rhubarb, this is NOT FAIR!

If you were given them to stop bleeding then presumably they should work whatever stage you take them at? If nobody on here knows (though I bet somebody does!) could you ring a pharmacist and ask for advice?

Lots of luck - have a lovely time - get some piccies!

Ghosty · 06/11/2002 10:18

Rhubarb ... have no helpful advice but really feel for you ... those special nights are rare enough without being spoiled by something like this! I would ask the doc or the pharmacist if I were you ...

Have a good night ... am very jealous!

SofiaAmes · 06/11/2002 10:28

rhubarb, please ask a doctor or pharmacist. The last thing you want is to get ill from the pills.
ps have you looked at the mirena coil thread (sorry if you have already commented on it), the coil might be the solution to your period problems in the long term.

Rhubarb · 06/11/2002 10:34

Have had a quick search on the Net for info on these tabs. They can be used for women who suffer from heavy periods, so I think I will include me in that and start taking them today. BUT I'm not so sure that they will work for tomorrow, speaking to my b-i-l who is a nurse, he said that he cannot envisage any medication reversing the effects of a period which has only just started. So I may end up wearing my lovely dress and sexy underwear with a nappy after all!

I might just give NHS Direct a call to see if they can offer any advice, however am worried it may seem trivial to them. Yet as any woman knows, if you have planned something special for months, for this to happen at the worst possible time is just such a nightmare that you will almost sell your soul to stop it!

Wish me luck! If I do find anything to stop periods from day one you can bet your life I'll be selling them on the black market!

pupuce · 06/11/2002 12:53

What about tampons and a light but heavy duty pad... and just change it every 1 hour or so...

SueDonim · 06/11/2002 14:18

Actually, there are tablets that act pretty fast. A friend of mine who had big probs with the menopause was given something to take for flooding and they worked in a few hours. Also, my teenage dd takes mefanamic acid (Ponstan) for heavy painful periods and they work within hours too.

Hope you have a good time, Rhubarb.

LEWEI · 06/11/2002 15:07

I was prescribed Tranexamic Acid for heavy and prolonged bleeding, they worked quickly and i didn't suffer any side effects. Hope you find something that helps

Rhubarb · 06/11/2002 20:52

Don't suppose you two have any of these tablets left do you? I'd be willing to pay! I've taked 2 of mine now and there are no signs of the period even lightening up never mind stopping.

I could use tampons Pupuce, but I don't like them. Also, as dd was away all night, this was supposed to be a ROMANTIC night! How can you have romance when you are wearing what amounts to an incontinence pad???

Dd is seeing the GP tomorrow for her cough, I might just lie and say my period is really heavy and ask for some Tranexamic - or would that be really naughty of me?

janh · 06/11/2002 21:24

Rhubarb, I looked your tablets up too, they are progesterone (or progestogen) and are supposed to be taken for 2-3 weeks before a period to make it lighter, so they I don't think they could work instantly, unfortunately.

If you plan to crash in on your DD's appt it might be diplomatic to ring the surgery first! Both to ask for the time and to make sure the GP has your records (or do they have them on a PC on their desk now?)

Tranexamic Acid or mefanamic acid (Ponstan) both sounds like they might help you. Good luck again!

SueDonim · 07/11/2002 06:30

LOL, Rhubarb! Sadly, the mail takes 2-3 weeks from here to the UK. But in contrast to the UK, I can buy mefanamic acid tabs cheaply over the counter here. I can also buy 10 amoxycilin capsules for 50p in our corner shop. Maybe there's an opportunity for me to start a business?

Rhubarb · 07/11/2002 14:28

SueDonim I think you should definitely set up some kind of drugs market here on Mumsnet for those pills!

Well I went to GP today and mentioned it to her (yes Janh they do have pc's on their desks). She said there is nothing wrong with taking Duphaston and that it should ease my bleeding almost immediately, but it hasn't. She also said there was nothing else she was willing to give me (cow!). So I am now resigned to going to this ball with period.

It sounds trivial I know, but my periods make me feel really down, I wear black, I feel dirty and smelly and it's just downright uncomfortable! I get that sudden gush whenever I stand up or cough - you know what I mean! I wanted so badly for this night to be a cheerful one, with dd at her grannies, I wanted to feel good about myself, and sexy. I just knew something like this would come up to ruin it. And the bugger of it is that if it had started on time, like it normally does, it wouldn't have been a problem at all! And I know dh is not looking forward to going anyway. So I just feel like staying in, going to bed early (no booze as my period means I will either vomit or faint) and feeling sorry for myself.

And if God's listening - well I'm thinking of becoming a Pagan so there!

Alibubbles · 07/11/2002 21:59

Rhubarb, email me on [email protected] and I'll get some in the post to you first thing tomorrow. They do work immediately, you can take them three times a day, it wouldn't hurt to take two at once. ( I used to dispense for Boots and I always buy and up to date BNF - Brtitish National Formulary - the pharmacists and doctors bible)

What a mean doctor, she could easily have given you a script for these over the phone, I always use them when I go skiing, as I have been sterilised I can't use the pill to delay the dreaded!

SueDonim · 08/11/2002 05:13

You must be glad to know your Dr is sooo sympathetic, Rhubarb. IKWYM about the periods, it makes you feel so bad. When I had a coil I had days when I couldn't even leave the house, not that I wanted to, with what felt like a pillow between my legs. I hope you do get a chance to enjoy yourself, maybe the period will lighten up very quickly.

Rhubarb · 11/11/2002 14:51

Thanks Alibubbles and Suedonim, sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, but I haven't been on the 'Net since my last post. I did go to the ball after all, my period didn't lighten however, I just tried to shrug it off and stored some heavy duty pads in my handbag, luckily our table was right next to the ladies toilets!!! They've must have know I was coming!

It did go well, considering. It wasn't as stuffy as my dh feared, he even danced with me a couple of times! I managed to get a fair bit tiddly without anything embarrassing happening. Can I just ask you Alibubbles for the tablets full name? And can I get them from the chemist? I might stockpile some in case there is a next time.

Tissy · 11/11/2002 14:59

Rhubarb, Mefenamic acid, AKA Ponstan is a prescription only medicine (I've got a copy of the BNF too!), so you can't buy them over the counter. Why not make an appointment to see another doctor in the practice, and ask again?

SueDonim · 12/11/2002 02:18

Glad you had a good time, Rhubarb. Maybe now is the time to seek out a more sympathetic doctor, before the next ball.

Lizzer · 12/11/2002 12:47

Hey they Rhubarb! Glad eveything wasn't ruined, Bit of a bugger though... I'll email you v soon

Alibubbles · 12/11/2002 13:39

Hi Rhubarb, glad all went well. Both mefanemic acid (Ponstan) and Tranexamic Acid (Cyklokapron) are script only, so ask your GP. I don't see why they shouldn't give them to you. I just phone up my GP and say I'm going skiing and due a period can I have some!

I can't take Norethisterone, which can delay your period as it makes me sick - I have also been sterilsed so don't take the pill so can't use that to delay a period. MA and TA work well, I had a little stash and would have sent them to you if we'd had enough time.

Alibubbles · 12/11/2002 13:40

OOps, repeated myself about skiing and sterilisation! Sorry!
