People that can sign passports

My mum is about to send off for her passport. She needs to have it signed by a "proffesional" person and I suggested her friend who is a nurse.

My mum's husband however insisted on taking the passport form to work with him to get his boss to sign it. His boss is a director of a construction firm and he thinks that makes him a proffesional person.

I could be wrong...but I don't think he will class as a "professional person".

I told my mum I'd ask on here though and assured her that one of you will know!

crosses fingers

There's a list somewhere of who's allowed to do it. I can't remember them all but I don't recall gaffers being on it. It has to be doctors, journalists, chartered surveyors ... basically it seems they have to be in a middle class profession.

Here

Sidge · 08/01/2008 21:57

I can do it - I'm a nurse

I think as long as you are in the sort of profession where you are 'registered' in some way, you can do it. I have signed a few passports and never had them queried.

I know teachers can do it because I've been asked in the past. Ministers/ priests are also on the list.

Pod1 · 08/01/2008 21:58

Oops must learn to type more quickly!

hoxtonchick · 08/01/2008 21:59

does your mum's husband's boss (!) actually know your mum? 'cos he can't sign the form if he only knows the husband. i feel her pain, i've just sent my passport off for renewal & it's consumed weeks of my life getting it all sorted. my best advice to her is to use the post office send & check service.

I think they need to put their passport number on the application too.

Local Government Officer - wow! DH can sign, we never knew that.

Fubsy · 08/01/2008 22:04

Ive signed them, and not had any problems, and Im only a physio.

Note - as usual people in government wouldnt know a therapist if one fell on top of them, only doctors and nurses work in hospitals!

I didnt see vet on that list either - theyre pretty professional arent they?

Iota · 08/01/2008 22:08

Fubsy -I can't see Drs or surgeons on that list either

Iota · 08/01/2008 22:08

oops Fubsy

Iota · 08/01/2008 22:08

no I'm going mad I thought I'd misspelt Funsy

PortAndLemonaid · 08/01/2008 22:13

There's a catch-all "or persons of similar standing in the community", too. I've signed one when I wasn't in any of those specific categories and they seemed to accept it OK.

Thanks for the advice It looks like he could sign it after all...grr I hate being wrong lol

I got mine and the kids first passports last year and I remember the stress of it all too well...I had mine signed by a nurse and sent them through the post office. Must admit, once they were sent off my passports came within a week so I couldn't complain there.

Can't believe the price of them now though! my poor mum nearly had a panic attack when she realised lol

Its a crazy price isnt it, especially when really you have to get one ahead of time, in case you decide you want to go abroad and cant get one in time!

Piggy · 09/01/2008 12:00

I thought you had to know the person before you sign the application or am I confusing it with something else? I've signed lots of passport applications (solicitor) for friends.

bundle · 09/01/2008 12:01

I was told anyone with a degree could sign too.

McDreamy · 09/01/2008 12:02

I've just finished filling in DD's renewal as she is 5 next month. You have to have known the applicant (or the parent in my case) for 2 years.
