like magdalene...who decided to pronounce it modlin or whatever it is.

There are loads of these words in UK.

Someone should make a board game of it.

Any good ones near you?

OK, here's a challenge (not open to any Gaelic speakers we may have here):

EARRAGHÀIDHEAL agus BHOID

clue: it's part of Scotland

HOburn
MARLYbone
PLAHstow

And Gudge (not Goooodge) Street.

For those of you not from Landan.

Threadworm · 31/12/2007 16:56

Are you sure it's pronounced Gudge Street?? I must Guggle that to see what the internet has to say on the subject.

WendyWeber · 31/12/2007 17:06

lol, threadworm - I was a bit surprised at Gudge too.

serenity · 31/12/2007 17:28

Well I'm from Sunny Sarth London and agree with Marlybone and plahstow, but waver between Ho and Hole burn (it's kind of a smudge between the two) but definitely have always said Gooooodge Street.

wheresthehamster · 31/12/2007 17:30

I've always said Goodge to sound like 'good'.

WendyWeber · 31/12/2007 18:10

Ohhh, would that be a short northern "u" in Gudge then? (Where you from, MrsS?)

So it would sound like the oo in good, not the u in rude?

(I would still say it like rude though. Being a Suvner and all)

newnamefornewyearbookwormmum · 01/01/2008 17:11

Goodge to rhyme with rouge .
