Which advent calender?

I was just wondering which advent calenders your all getting your little ones? I can't choose between a white buttons one or a kinder one (which looks really nice. Jamie didn't have one last year as he was only 6 weeks old so we are really looking foward to this year.

I always like to get a Thornatons one for each of them with their names iced on.

unicorn · 17/11/2004 14:16

I think Oxfam (fairtrade) are doing some, may get one of theirs this year..

fairydust · 17/11/2004 14:18

we get a free thorontons one as my mummy works there - then i have a cadburys one as i don't like thorntons.

Easy · 17/11/2004 14:22

FD, I'll have your thorntons one .

We have a big felt father christmas with 24 little pockets in, which I fill with little chocolate figures and sweets and hang up on 1st Dec.

jamiesmom · 17/11/2004 14:25

I didn't know thorontons or oxfam did them, I like the santa idea bet the kids love that

Yes, M&S are doing lovely little chocolate figures of santas, snowmen and Christmas crackers this year, just perfect for the pockets.

wilbur · 17/11/2004 14:35

I prefer advent calendars to still reflect the advent/nativity story so I've got ds one from Divine chocs - lovely illustrations on the front and the chocolate is very nice too. I think you can get them pretty much anywhere.

jamiesmom · 17/11/2004 14:36

Easy - bet you love shopping for the little chocs to put in the pockets

Couple of years ago I found a gorgeous 3D one in Amsterdam - you folded it to make a fairytale cottage with the 24 windows over the four sides (five if you include dormers in the roof). Searched everywhere for similar again last year but no luck. Anyone seen this? Any ideas?

PS wasn't a chocolate one. Am mean & don't let them have that.

enid · 17/11/2004 14:49

playmobil!

motherinferior · 17/11/2004 14:50

Divine fair traded chocolate one from Traidcraft.

Two of them, actually.

I have bought a wooden advent tree so instead of choc DD can get to hang mini decorations on a tree. Drawers with decorations are also big enough to hold additional chocs if required.

Sonnet · 17/11/2004 15:07

ooo jura - where did you get the Quentin blake one from please???

Bozza · 17/11/2004 15:25

I always buy a picture one. But MIL always supplies a choccie one. Generally this is a Kinder one but this year she has upgraded to Milky Bar. She has also sent DS and DD one each. DD is 6mo so guess who will be eating those chocs. Last year my sis bought DS a Divine one so if she does that again we will end up with the Nestle one sat next to the Fair Trade one unless I stick the scrooge-mummy (aka picture) one in the middle.

zubb · 17/11/2004 15:29

we've got a big santa one (sounds a bit like easy's) that has 24 parcels on it. Last year ds1 had cars every day, and this year it's dinosaurs - very festive . Ds2 is only 1 so not having anything this year - next year they'll do alternate days.
They have a chocolate one at their childminders but she hasn't chosen it yet.

pootlepod · 17/11/2004 21:41

oooh, where did you find the kinder one? A few years ago, got a kinder one from France which had full size kinder eggs and other chocolate bars behind it!
Thing is, didn't have kids then so it was just for me. Put on a bit of weight that year.

Bubu · 17/11/2004 22:07

My Dad has bought my DS a football one - from his favourite football team - my Dad's favourite football team that is, DS is only 15months and won't be eating the chocolate!! I've made one for my mum, just bought 25 little things, including chocolate and wrapped them all up in a basket with numbers on them for the days!!!

Hulababy · 17/11/2004 22:13

DD will probably have a white buttons one I guess, although I like the Playmobil ones. But she is a bit young I think - maybe next year.

I'm making one which will probably be finished by the time bean is leaving home!

its a set of wooden drawers which i'm decorating, each drawer has the date and a little christmasy decoration on the front. I'm going to put something to go on the tree, a chocolate and a little pressie for each day inside.

Kinder and Thorntons advent calendars? What next?

Sorry, just think things have gone a bit silly.

I had been looking everywhere to find an advent calendar that actually had any nativity related images on it at all with no joy.

Eventually they appeared in Woolies - they have got chocolates in but I don't care because it is a proper "advent" calendar with a nativity theme.

It really annoys me that these are so difficult to find.

jude2105 · 18/11/2004 15:53

We have a small tree (about 18") and then hung from a nail is a big scene of fireplace/christmassy stuff (printed on material) with 24 little christmas stockings on it - one for each day. In each one i place a little decoration (was a struggle finding so many little decorations but we're there now!). Don't bother with choc one at the moment - but who knows what the pressure will be like as they grow older?!
