Talk to me about Newquay, please!

Thinking about booking a week in Newquay for myself and DD in the Summer. (having just discovered cheap flights!)

I've had a bit of a look around and it seems as if there is quite a bit to do and it looks child friendly (which is always a good thing)

So was just wondering about other's experiences, before I go ahead, and also if anyone has any recommendations for accommodation!

TIA

Newquay, cornwall?

Seems to split these days between traditional hoildays - old folk eating chips out of paper, buckets and spades etc - and the young surfer hols. It can be a bit rough, IMO, and noisy. Lots of litter.
However, it is in a beautiful area, there are things for kids to do round about (sealife on the beach iirc).

cece · 28/12/2007 12:04

Do not do it - Newquay is full of drunk teenagers. Maybe fly there and move a bit further along the coast to a nicer bit.

yulemoonfiend · 28/12/2007 12:07

fly to Newquay and rent a car and stay somewhere else. - cornwall is gorgeous, Newquay is fine for a day trip to the zoo, or the waterpark but don't stay there with young children IMO..

yogimum · 28/12/2007 12:08

We stayed up the coast near Padstow. Went to Newquay zoo for the day. Newquay is known for been a party town so could be a bit noisy.

LIZS · 28/12/2007 12:08

We went mid summer and Newquay itself was a full of fish and chip shops, teens on a working summer btiching about each other, ice creams and shosp selling usual seaside tat etc. The Aquarium is expensive fro a raniy horu or tow but you cna often find discount vouchers. The area is lovely thoguh. Sands Resort is along the coast a few miles with organised activities for kids, indoor & outdoor pools and a small spa for adults. Watergate Bay a little further along (great beach for surfing , hotel right next door) then further again Bedruthan Steps Hotel before you reach Padstow (lovely harbour). There is the Camel Trial for cycling, boat trips, National Trust properties inland , steam train centres and so on.

yogimum · 28/12/2007 12:09

We stayed at bedruthan steps hotel. It was lovely.

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 28/12/2007 12:21

Thanks all, I'll have a look into the areas round about then!

I could fly into Newquay and then travel along the coast a bit!

Will look into the suggestions given so far. Thanks!

Newquay Airport is not far from any of the places mentioned.

Sarahjct · 28/12/2007 21:37

Love love love Cornwall but not a fan of Newquay TBH (no offence to any Newquayians!). Stay somewhere else and visit is my advice, otherwise I think it'll be very rowdy and noisy.

We usually stay in Perranporth which is just up the road but a lot quieter. Huge beautiful unspoilt beach as well.

FlossALumpOfPud · 28/12/2007 21:39

another vote for perranporth. We stayed at the haven camp there - I can't say I'd recommend it as such, but its ok for families with kids.

moljam · 28/12/2007 21:41

cornwall has much nicer places than newquay.perranporth is lovely and falmouth.newquay is lovely but gets very busy and the clubs which can be bonus for some holiday makers arent so for others-like family holidayers!
we live in north cornwall-near us is boscastle which is very beutiful but not alot to do tbh!

NKF · 28/12/2007 21:50

We went to Cornwall last year and were massively disappointed. Very crowded and not as pretty as its fans make out. And pricey. Awful food in most places. I'd never go again but I'm sure there are pockets that are worth visiting. Maybe the Eden project or something.

fullofchocolatemoonfiend · 28/12/2007 21:56

north cornwall is the way forward...

moljam · 28/12/2007 22:00

fullofchocolatemoonfiend are you in north cornwall?
NKF you obviously didnt come to right places!

NKF · 28/12/2007 22:01

You're probably right. But you know how it is. One bad costly holiday and you say never again.

moljam · 28/12/2007 22:02

!!

coby · 28/12/2007 22:05

Definitely fly into Nequay and leave ASAP.

As others have said, it is rough and rowdy and there are much nicer places. What sort of holiday are you after? I am on the North Cornwall / Devon Border and travel around the area a fair bit.

Lots of nice places down here, just depends on what you are after...lots of dismal areas too.

pmsl at 'north cornwall being the way forward' - obviously not visited my bit then

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 28/12/2007 22:05

Thanks all, I think I will book up the flights just now as they are going really cheap (£6 return plus tax) and then look into accommodation and all the different places!

Thanks all!

DH has been holidaying there since he was born and is now 27.
We now take the kids to Cornwall as DH knows it like the back of his hand.
We usually stay in Perranporth too but we used to caravan in our 2 berth but now with the kids we go and stay in statics as our van is too small.
We usually have a day or 2 in Newquay, mainly so DH can go in all the surf shops as he surfs and do some surfing there.
He is in bed atm as he is poorly otherwise I could tell you loads of lovely places to look, along with secluded beaches to explore that mostly only locals know about.

coby · 28/12/2007 22:08

I know people who have been coming to Bude every year for 30 years. We have nice beaches I guess but 30 years in one bit of Cornwall - you'd miss so much else (it varies a lot).

Staying anywhere around Eden Project in Summer will inc your journey times a fair bit - no motorways down 'ere you know!

cece · 28/12/2007 22:21

Now Bude is nice. I enjoyed our holiday in Portreat as well. Last year we stayed near Camelford, but you would need a car to get to the beaches. Our favourite beach last year was Harlyn Bay

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 28/12/2007 22:21

Thanks, we will be coming at the very end of June (28th) as that is the start of the scottish school holidays, so it may be a bit quieter then??

My DP is coming now too (was originally planning on just DD and I) so we will probably hire a car (I can't drive) so that will make things a little easier!

I'll have a look at all the places mentioned!

moljam · 28/12/2007 22:24

cece -thats where i am!you do need car-i dont drive therefore get bored!

cece · 28/12/2007 22:28

Really! We stayed in Lanteglos.

fullofchocolatemoonfiend · 29/12/2007 10:46

moljam, sadly no - would love to though. we spend a week or 2 every year camping round Tintagel, Bossiney etc. Trebarwith Strand is one of our favourite spots on the planet

Mind you, travelling from oop north takes so long, we mostly go north cornwall as we are too knackered to drive any further.
We have friends in Penzance.
