What would you have in your ideal kitchen ?

I'm trying to get a list of things together for kitchen designer's visit and was wondering if there was anything (apart from the obvious pan / plate storage) that you wish you had in your kitchen

So far I have
.. a place to keep bits and bobs that aren't necessarily kitcheny (kids health books / medicines etc)
.. storage for long-term things like juices (we buy in bulk)
... utility cupboard for mops / brushes / ironing board

brain dead ...

One of those big pull out larder things.

fio2 · 10/11/2004 16:12

well at the moment twiglet I would be happy with a working sink, a plumbed in hob, plaster on the walls and a few cupboards!!

Hulababy · 10/11/2004 16:13

Special corner cupboards, where you can access everything and it is useful space, unloke most normal standard corner cupboards.

We have a useful drawer under the oven too, which is normally wasted space.

What about one of those hidden away wooden chopping board - they look like very narrow drawers, but pull out to reveal real use.

SoupDragon · 10/11/2004 16:13

A practical solution to the old corner cupboard conundrum. My "carousel" thingy is pants.

sweetheart · 10/11/2004 16:13

a built in wine rack!!!

HJ · 10/11/2004 16:13

hidden bin, wall cupboards that reach the ceiling so you dont have to dust em!

SoupDragon · 10/11/2004 16:14

Oooh yes, Hula, I like those "kick board" storage drawers that make use of wasted space.

zubb · 10/11/2004 16:14

I'm going through this at the moment, as we are having an extension built with a new kitchen. Definately want a big larder and a dishwasher.

fio2 · 10/11/2004 16:15

I like those deep drawers that you can put your sausepans in

Hulababy · 10/11/2004 16:16

If kitchen is big enough, I'd love one of those islands in the middle.

Bozza · 10/11/2004 16:17

We had L shaped corner cupboards with double hinged doors. They were brilliant. Then we moved.

fio2 · 10/11/2004 16:18

see its all a matter of taste isnt it. i hate island as i would just keep walking into it!

Hulababy · 10/11/2004 16:19

Built in appliances, but would love a big Smeg fridge on show as well.

Gingerbear · 10/11/2004 16:22

Somewhere to put the blender/ food processor/toaster/george forman lean mean fighting grilling machine.....

microwave NOT on the work top

Pull out skinny larder thingy (to store tins so that you can actually get to them

A cool / dry place for veg and fruit(not quite a fridge temperature)

Flip down TV (saw one of these in a showroom and thought it was wonderful)

Stuff I wouldn't bother with:
Telescopic towel rail
'Built-in' anything (except oven/hob) - fridge, dishwasher, wastebin, ironing board, chopping board.
Under or in cupboard lights - ours when on show just what a dirty mare I am cos I haven't cleaned the glass in the cabinets for AGES

handbagaddiction · 10/11/2004 16:22

Definitely go for the hidden bin. also - what about some airy storage for vegetables?

Prettybird · 10/11/2004 16:24

An American syle fridge freezer. I just LOVE ours!

The pull out larder things are great - but think about getting more than one. My one is SO overloaded!

Pull out bar things for tea towels. Somewhere to put trays/chopping boards.

I only remembered about the ironing board too late

Twiglett · 10/11/2004 16:24

a goody cupboard
a medicine cupboard
pull out storage around sink (that looks like a cupboard)

keep going

a 1 1/2 sink is uesful

Titania · 10/11/2004 16:26

a cage with a lock on for the kids........

Blu · 10/11/2004 16:28

Enough plug sockets at work top height
I miss my big wall grid on which I hung utensils and pans for easy access - but I guess that's a matter of taste / preference.
Am v

Nikkichik · 10/11/2004 16:30

dishwasher - we are living in rented and ours is in storage as no room for it - I really miss it.
Yes to the wine rack - out of kids way though! - but it would have to come with the wine and be replaced magically on a regular basis!
Cutlery drawer with compartments
book shelf for all those recipe books your Mum/mil gives you!!!!!

Twiglett · 10/11/2004 16:33

a sink that's big enough to lay a roasting pan in it flat

good drainage and somewhere to stack plates after washing

somewhere for extra plates and glasses

somewhere to store all the gadgets that we use for a month then clutter up

somewhere to sit and eat

OP posts:
bakedpotato · 10/11/2004 16:35

double sink with waste disposal/big draining board

mixer taps (well, obviously, but...)

make sure your fridge is at eyelevel. nothing worse than bending down to get the veg out of that drawer.

Gingerbear · 10/11/2004 16:42

my built in dishwasher makes the surrounding cupboards v hot, the laminate on the door and worktop have started to delaminate due to the steam when you open the door. The built in fridge is a PITA to keep clean, and the door keeps 'dropping' and won't shut properly.
Concealed waste bin = vvv unhygienic and even if you clean regularly, the cupboard holds a peculiar pong.

Granite worktops look beautiful but are difficult to keep sparkly clean. Ditto stainless steel appliances.

Twiglett · 10/11/2004 16:42

already got a US style fridge-freezer .. its staying ... reminds me need to be able to pull it out easily to get access to filter .. and somewhere to store filters
