Does anyone sing in a choir?

I've always wanted to join a choir (not a church one, I'm a heathen), but am too much of a scaredy cat to go on my own. Any choir singing mumsnetters out there? If so, how did you get into it and can you recommend me a friendly choir in London?

SM, I would be interested in singing in a choir, but am just worried about the time it might require.

Jura, your choir sounds very interesting! I can sing and sightread, and I am an alto. But does it involve a lot of travelling? I have a little one, and my DH often travels.... but it would be so nice to sing again!

jura, that choir sounds wonderful. I think I know which one it is...Maybe in a couple of years when baby dd is older [wistful emoticon].

Yes acnebride please have a look here - Oxford Gospel Choir

It would be great if you could come along!

We are a really informal choir and are always on the lookout for new members.

I used to sing with a Choir in Birmingham. It was great fun but they did have an audition.. I had to leave as my work rota meant I couldn't make enough rehearsals

Dh is a singing teacher. He is friends with one of the women who won Operatunity. You couldn't have wished for anyone nicer to have won it and it has totally changed her life. Howevr she still comes back here to sing with the local male voice choir in her village and to rasie money for local charities.

Definitely look on British Choirs on the net. here - the choir I conduct (though not a lot of use to you as it is not in London) is unauditioned, but does lots of challenging repertoire - we've done things like Rachmaninov Vespers, through to Wind in the Willows by Rutter. So there are choirs that don't require you to sit a stiff audition!

eemie - I sang wiht the Camden Chamber (not Camden Choir) but greatly disliked the conductor who had a foul mouth and then wiht the Canonbury Chamber for 7 years - I'm not sure I'm eccentric though - my father in law still sings wiht them after 20 years.....
For big choir fun space monkey you could try City of London Choir in the city Conductor used to be Hilary Davan Whetton lots of vocal technique and great concerts at the Barbican adn Albert Hall.

Good luck space monkey my weekly sing is my life saver and a real oxygen high. I wouldnt miss it for anything. And the gang I sing wiht are lovely (slightly subversive back row of the sops)

Would love to offer my dulcet soprano to the MN choir but am sadly not London based any longer.

I've just joined a choir (in Wales, so no use to any of you). I've been wanting to get back into singing for years, but was nervous about joining one "cold" - it's so nervewracking to join something established where everyone knows everyone else already.

Luckily enough, the Eisteddfod (Welsh cultural event) came to Newport this year, so I joined the Eisteddfod choir, which is put together just for the Eisteddfod, and is made up of people local to the area. I figured that everyone would be new, so it wouldn't be so hard.

It was fab! The best thing, though, is that I met loads of people from the choir that I have now joined (which was established from the Eisteddfod choir from the last time it was here). The Eisteddfod choir was led by the musical director and accompanist (sp?) from my current choir, and lots of the people in the E (can't be bothered to type that word again! )choir are members of my current choir. So once the E was over, I plucked up the courage to join. THe audition was a bit nervewracking, but not difficult, and I enjoy it so much.

We are one of the choirs singing at the opening of the Welsh Milennium centre in Cardiff in a couple of weeks. Massed choirs, in total 2,500 people. It's going to be fab.

motherinferior, his initials were IM.

Bubbly, I know who you are then! I was there (CCC) when you had your first dd, you brought her to a concert when she was two weeks old, and you were still there when I had mine. I married a baritone.

Agree with you about the conductor of Camden Choir, still better known for his rudeness than anything else but not nearly as bad as he used to be. It helped that most people in the choir didn't take a blind bit of notice.

motherinferior · 11/11/2004 16:44

Brain not working sufficiently, Eemie, but it was a fun choir. I did enjoy it.

fairyfly · 11/11/2004 16:47

Miai (totally forgotten how to spell it) they came round are school and auditioned people. Loved it apart from the burgundy A line. Found out recently Sykes was in it too

honeyflower · 11/11/2004 17:24

Spacemonkey, you might want to try the Hackney Singers, who meet round the back of Mare Street, so easy to get to from Islington. I used to sing with them years ago, they are very welcoming and inclusive, and generally very 'Hackney' IYSWIM. Have a look at their website .

spacemonkey · 25/11/2004 14:37

I am going to see if I can pluck up the courage to go along to the Islington Choral Society in the new year. They are a non-auditioned choir who rehearse near where I live, sound v friendly.

Have just checked out their programme for next year and they're doing the Mozart Requiem next summer. Sigh. I'd LOVE to sing that!
