Does anyone sing in a choir?

I've always wanted to join a choir (not a church one, I'm a heathen), but am too much of a scaredy cat to go on my own. Any choir singing mumsnetters out there? If so, how did you get into it and can you recommend me a friendly choir in London?

i'm just off essex road in N1

I am full of admiration, I would dearly love to have the confidence to stand up and sing

Ooooh, spacemonkey, I used to sing in a rather eccentric Highbury Chamber Choir round your way. It's still going, I believe, so I could find out about it for you (Blu has my email address).

I think we should form a doo-wop style girlie MN choir, though.

spacemonkey, those courses are tailor-made for you then. There was a huge range of basic musicality on the course that I attended and every single one of us felt able to do that by the end. I'd say that for all of us it was much more than just singing lessons.
I LOVE Musicality - "If that's Warren, I want to be the rabbit", indeed. But then I always was a shocking fag hag.

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 14:06

I will definitely enquire about the city lit courses marina, they sound wonderful. Azure, do you want to come with?

I loved it too, and indulged in the most inappropriate fantasies of West End stardom

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 14:07

maomao · 10/11/2004 14:10

I used to sing in choirs when I was young. I really loved it (and sometimes I still do it in my dreams!).

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 14:10

maomao, would you like to do it again?

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 14:13

maomao · 10/11/2004 14:29

I hope too! Not sure what time Davros is going, though.

Juliehafrancis · 10/11/2004 14:41

I belong and run a gospel choir in Oxford and it's fab. I love it!
I did singing professionally before being a mummy and it's my only way of continuing with my passion.
I would definetely advise you to go for it Spacemonkey. The whole audition process is normally very relaxed (in fact our choir doesn't even have one!)

Lots of luck. Hope you find a nice choir

Jules x

Juliehafrancis, how cool is that --- a gospel choir! Do you perform in Oxford?

essbee, I'm trying to guess what you played in your incompetent band....

Spacemonkey, yes I'ld be keen to join you at City Lit. I think it's near where I work. Looks like most of the courses started in September, though. BTW, I love "Musicality" too.

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 14:56

Azure, I'll get in touch with them and find out - they might do short courses that start in the new year? Will let you know

motherinferior, if you sang in the Highbury Chamber Choir then I've probably heard you. The concert I went to was good but it was about 10 years ago. A friend of mine sang bass. The Canonbury Chamber Choir was even more eccentric btw.

acnebride · 10/11/2004 16:15

what a lovely thread. hope you make it spacemonkey.

anyone in west london, i used to belong to the Addison Singers who are on the British Choirs on the Net list. Well worth checking out, they do the most interesting music i've ever come across and the ability level is certainly varied!! they also do basic classes, vocal technique classes and a chamber choir if you feel you want something else.

spacemonkey, i went to a couple of concerts at the Union Chapel by Songlines who are a fantastic bunch, non-audition I think, run by an amazing woman called Sarah Jewell. They use the Kodaly method which IIRC basically means not reading music but being conducted through the tune. Much easier than it sounds and very physical. Have no idea how to get in touch with them tho so not much use!!

Juliehafrancis, i'm living in oxford and starting to think about joining a choir again - do you have a link about your choir or can I CAT you?

motherinferior · 10/11/2004 16:16

You will indeed have heard me, Eemie. Who was your friend?

I'm far too far away to join in most of this but just had to say I also love love love Musicality and can't wait to see it again tonight. Completely agree Marina, the bloke is fab. I loved them (the trainers) singing that song at the end.

May I just mention I saw the two women who won Operatunity walking down the street two weeks ago? Shameless namedropper, me

spacemonkey · 10/11/2004 18:36

I will certainly CAT you jura! Thank you
