Okay, so here is my general knowledge round of the pub quiz I am doing later this week. How many can you get right?

I want to test out whether I am making the quiz questions too hard or too easy. So I'm testing the general knowledge section out on you! If someone is with you, you may confer since there are usually teams of people at at a quiz - it isn't a solo pursuit

Rules are:

Give yourself 5 minutes only for all 10 questions (simulating quiz conditions), and no looking up any answers.

I will post the correct answers 1 hour from now.

The questions are:

1)Which animal performed the wedding in the Owl and the Pussycat?

2)To which flower family does garlic belong?

3)Although used as a nickname for US soldiers, what does GI actually stand for?

4)In which year was the first email sent?

5)In clothing care symbols, what does a plain circle signify?

6)Which is the only one of Richard Branson?s products not to have the Virgin name attached to it?

7)What does the V stand for in DVD?

8)From which animal does the perfume
ingredient ambergris originate?

9)What is the title of the person who gives the results of elections?

10)Nicholas Breakspear was the first and only British what?

If you want my opinion (and you've posted it on t'internet, so I assume you do ) this is not general knowledge, it is quite specialised knowledge.

I have LOADS of experience of setting pub quizes, and the trick is to ask a question that the teams either know, or think that they should know. For most of these, they will think "how the feck am I supposed to know that" You're not supposed to be trying to catch them out with questions that they won't know.

Unless your pub is about to be entered into Brain of Britain, I would ask some easier questions.

Hope I haven't offended anyone

handlemecarefully · 03/12/2007 10:31

Yes that makes sense Squonka.

I have other questions. I think I will start an alternative General Knowledge quiz on a different thread to see how that goes

Btw there have been some correct answers so far

OP posts:
FairyOnTopOfTheChristmasTree · 03/12/2007 10:32

I could probably get 3 or 4 of those right, and I do go to quite a few pub quizzes and do ok in them. IMHO I think the questions are a bit too specialised for a general knowledge round.

I managed 6 out of 10 (1,2,3,5,6,9) but should have got more. I couldnt remember when the first email was sent and didnt get Brakespear or perfume either tho I should have. Most of the questions seem to me to be pretty much of the type found in most pub quizes which tbh I'm pretty crap at cos my brain can never recall the proper info at the right time.

Actually GI stands for Galvanised Iron, but was mistakenly thought to stand for General ISsue and thus applied to all military things including soldiers (lots of references, here's one)

TenLordsaLapin · 03/12/2007 11:06

And garlic is definitely an allium, Allium sativum L from the Alliaceae family, as opposed to lilies, which are lilium from the Liliaceae family.
