My ex SIL was like that! I could not believe it. She was always commenting on how her dd was attractive, slim, had nice small bum - she was 9 at the time!! FFS - of course she had all these things.....I really think she is mad.

OrmIrian · 21/11/2007 12:29

Perhaps the little girl had a problem with her body image and was convinced she was fat. As are quite a few young girls. Mum was just trying to make her feel better?

Wheelybug · 21/11/2007 12:30

MY MIL comments on how 'slim' and what a good figure dd has - She's 2

suwoo · 21/11/2007 12:31

She's a twat . I get very cross about this sort of thing.

lomond · 21/11/2007 12:33

What an idiot!

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 12:33

she's probably not a twat.

moljam · 21/11/2007 12:36

bloody hell!!!my friends 7 year old is becoming a bit concerned about her weight which i worry about as my dd is her best friend.its so sad that adults are pushing there views on children about weight issues.
i agree silly woman.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 21/11/2007 12:37

Whilst it is very stupid to speak like this woman did, I will hold my hands up to flattering DD1 when she is trying on clothes. This is more to do with the fact that
a. She is almost 13, and very conscious
and
b. She is under the (mistaken) impression that she is fat, because there are skinnier girls than her at school. She is a good, healthy weight and has an athletic build, but carps on about her 'chunky' legs. Cripes! I would kill for long, athletic legs like hers, and will tell her so when she is trying on new clothes, telling her how good she looks.

It is hard enough to get her to wear anything other than jeans and hoodies that shroud her body.

That's what I meant grumpy. It would be nice if you could reassure your DD by telling her that size didn't matter but sadly I suspect it wouldn't work.

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 12:44

To be fair 'skewed' idea of beauty ie being slim isnt going to come solely from her mother - more from society at large. I dare say her mother wants her to be a weight that is good for her health as do I for my dd.

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 12:45

calling her a twat on the basis of this is what really annoys me about mumsnet.

where's the need?

yes I agree with that, it is up to us but I dont believe she is doing any long term damage to her dd by saying some jeans make her look thin. I dont think anyone is in any doubt that obesity can cause all sorts of health problems and so I think it maybe good to ingrain in our children that being perhaps not thin but slim (insofar as the right weight for their bone structure ie no excess fat) is a good thing.

I speak as someone who is considered obese and who is desperately trying to address it at 36 before it becomes dangerous to my health if it isnt already and as someone who will do everything they can to ensure good health for her child which includes encouraging healthy weight.

And sorry didnt mean you said twat it was someone else.

allgonebellyup · 21/11/2007 13:08

oh for fucks sake, this really winds me up.

Who are these STUPID women making comments about their daughters' figures??? They should be shot.
I will never ever make any comments about my dd's body, she does a lot of gymnastics and gets praise for all her muscles, which she loves(??)
One of the other mums said "well, your dd is "bigger" than all the other girls", and i added "yes, its solid muscle, from sport, so what?"

If anyone dared comment on how lovely and "slim" dd is, i take real offence. She is 8 ffs. She is slim, yes, tall - yes, and muscley. Why do you HAVE to comment on it???????????

She is a child.

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 13:09

you already did. Make a comment about dd's body I mean. In that she's very sporty and toned.

allgonebellyup · 21/11/2007 13:24

ok

my problem is with calling children "skinny" or "thin".

whats that all about????

yes i agree said woman is a TWAT

TWAT

TWAT

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 13:29

You seem to be taking the stance that if she was not thin the mother would be saying nothing or being critical. Maybe the child is natural thin. It isnt a crime to be thin. Maybe she wanted to look like her big sister in her 'skinny' jeans so the mum was just playing along.

How the hell do we know?

At least there is one thing for sure, we all have behaviour twattishly in someone's eyes sometimes...

OrmIrian · 21/11/2007 13:31

Would it have been as twattish to say she was pretty, or blond, or any other comment about her looks?

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 13:31

not least me for that crime to grammar lol

Is it fio? Those are both value judgements about their looks.

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 13:34

so if they had said you look so pretty that would be ok?
