Its not thefact that the girl was skinny but the fact that the mother
her was PRAISING her for the being thin.

IF the mum wants an anorexic daughter on her hands in 5yrs time then she'll have one alright.

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 13:35

utter rubbish I'm afraid.

Sweeping statements ahoy!!!!

allgonebellyup · 21/11/2007 13:39

Oh ok then.

Let's all praise our daughters for the way they look like twiglets and how wonderful it is to be thin. Fabulous, even!
Let's get them all to starve themselves because mummy thinks it is so important to be scrawny?

I am a size 8 and I HATE people commenting on how slim I am in front of dd. She picks up on all of it.

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 13:47

this is a comment made in a changing room about how a garment fits.

Can we get some proportion? Like I said, we dont know why she said it - could be for the reason I stated - could be that her dd (even at 7) feels conscious of her weight - could be that the woman is superficial and living vicariously through her daughter - could be that she wants her to daughter to be healthy and equates that with being thin

We dont know. I do know on the strength of this that shouting out 'twat!twat!' is pretty dire and hopefully you set a better example to your kids than that (if we're talking about good/bad parenting)

manchita · 21/11/2007 13:50

I think telling your children they are handsome or pretty is different to commenting on their weight.
The fact you believe they are beautiful is something permenant that reflects your love for them, and it's not praise, it is saying i think you are beautiful, no matter what.
I find adults putting thier opinons about weight on children v disturbing.
My dd is very petite, small boned and quite tiny for her age. People have commented on this since she was a baby.
She's been told - aren't you lucky you're so slim! (This when she was 18 months old!)
Most recent one was family member: You have a great figure in that dress, darling, it's imp for girls to be pretty and skinny like you!
(she is 4 )
Can we just let them be children a bit longer please!

manchita · 21/11/2007 13:51

Must say, these comments make me v angry and I have spoken to family member. I don't talk to dd about her size at all

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 13:52

I agree prolonged emphasis on weight and figure say in family/friends circles is probably corrosive to self esteem to a little girl but we just cant comment on this woman from this one example of her behaviour.

manchita · 21/11/2007 14:05

Yes, i think shouting out twat is a bit inappropriate and yes, b&f I agree we can't judge this woman on this one example.
I do think it brings up an interesting topic though-while it is imp for children to learn about healthy lifestyles are we damaging children who are a bit chubby (which is natural in some cases)by drawing attention to them?

suwoo · 21/11/2007 16:56

OK maybe I won't shout out the T word again for fear of annoying binkle, but some people are just so stupid!! I can understand the poster that is re-assuring her 13 year old and giving her positive affirmations, but 'praising' a 7 year old for being skinny is setting her up for a troubled road ahead IMO. We have to be so careful what messages we sent to our daughters, and to actually say this to her is outrageous. Would also like to say, that I don't praise my skinny daughter for being such (doubt she is even aware of its meaning) and neither do I use the T word in front of her

binkleandflip · 21/11/2007 16:59

thanks suwoo - I'm a sensitive soul doncha know

suwoo · 21/11/2007 17:01

I was very angry as had just had row with DH, I meant it though

edam · 21/11/2007 17:02

What an idiot.

And FWIW being a little overweight is actually better for your health than being too thin.

colditz · 21/11/2007 17:06

Worra tit.
