It’s Thanksgiving – What are you thankful for?

(well, it is on Thursday)

There was a thread like this last year and it was lovely?

I am thankful for:

My DS, obviously ? he is truly the most wonderful thing ever ? I never imagined I could love anyone as much as I do him.

That I am alive ? there were times this year when I almost wasn?t. It is so good to be able to sit and say that I am glad to be here

All the people, both in RL and MNers, some of whom have become my good friends in RL too, for helping me when I really needed it. For setting me straight, talking to me late at night when I desperately needed company, for supporting & encouraging me when it looked like all was lost. And, for making me smile and laugh. I don?t think I could have made it without you.

So, what are you thankful for?

Not that we celebrate Thanksgiving in the UK - and I'm married to a Canadian, whose family celebrated it last month - but anyway...

I'm thankful for the safe arrival of my beautiful dd3 (particularly following the sb of dd2 in 2006), that my family are all happy and healthy and that I love - and am loved by - far more people than I deserve.

Happy Thanksgiving to you all

BrassicMonkey · 21/11/2007 02:30

I'm thankful:

that I was born in a country where I have opportunities

for the true friends that I made this summer and the old friends, who were there when I really needed them

for my health

for my lovely little boy who amazes me every day with his enthusiasm for mundane things

and lastly, for MN...of course

DS (4) made me smile when they did this at his school. They had to explain thankful to him, but when many kids put toys and such he said that he was thankful for:

Mom and Dad
His sister
Grandma and Grandpa
His friends
School
Playing

It almost made me cry.

DS is too young to understand this but I am sure, if I asked him, he would be thankful for cheese

Here is last year's thread

The still-sleepy little 2-month-old (aka ds2) dozing off now at my breast. And the lovely doctor who delivered him after a fast and, at the end, potentially dramatic labour

The fluffy-haired 2.6-year-old (aka ds1) curled up asleep under his stripy blanket in the bedroom. And F who knitted him the blanket with such love despite us not being family or even friends really

Being able to breastfeed both

The not-so-hulking great 32-year-old (aka dh) quite probably snoring his head off in our bed

The lovely darling friends we stayed with last week

Our cheap and (but) gorgeous flat

dh's PhD funding

The German state for maternity benefits which are enabling me to take a year off with ds2

A lovely boss who took me on pregnant and made my life generally a lot less of a worry this year

The Berlin botanic garden which I will be taking the boys to later, for ds1 to run and kick leaves to his little heart's content

The ability to cope with sleep deprivation

MN for sharing my shit last year and my joy this.

berolina · 21/11/2007 06:48

Oh, I must add my Senseo machine. I hear it calling merrily from the kitchen now. Would be lost without.

scienceteacher · 21/11/2007 06:49

I am thankful that we have come across another year fit and healthy.

I am thankful that DS1 is doing well in his GCSE/AS courses, and that DS2 has settled in well to his senior school.

I am thankful for having found a great school to work in, where I can actually be a teacher.

I am thankful that we got to go to DH's family reunion this year.

Minum · 21/11/2007 06:57

My wonderful DH who makes me happy every day

DS1 who is funny and articulate and perceptive

DS2 who is adorable and entertaining and so sociable

Autumn colours

Because I can walk down to the Thames whenever I want

That for several weeks every year I can be at home and in control of my own time

That Advent is coming

it was Thanksgiving in October, wasn't it ?

Blandmum · 21/11/2007 20:28

I'm thankful dh is still alive.

This time last year I wasn't sure that he would make christmas.

OverRated · 21/11/2007 20:35

Hana, Thanksgiving in the US is always the 4th Thursday of November, which is tomorrow. Canada celebrates theirs earlier.

Martianbishop, I did think of you when I started this thread. Some of the things I am thankful for seem trivial in comparison.

Blandmum · 21/11/2007 20:38

Thankful is god!

doesn't matter what for.

I'm just glad he is still with us. He is rough atm, but we are hoping to restart some treatment soon. I'm thankful for that too

Blandmum · 21/11/2007 20:38

good!

onlyjoking9329 · 21/11/2007 20:39

i am thankful that despite everything else going on the kids are looking forward to christmas.
i am thankful that i have my lovely DH and kids around to love and share things with

expatinscotland · 21/11/2007 20:41

whenver it comes to Thanksgiving, i always think of this passage from the brilliant book 'Cold Mountain', where Ruby gives her view about the Civil War:

'She had heard stories of the northern country and had come to understand that it was a godless land, or rather a land of only one god, and that was money. The report was that under the rule of such a grabby creed people grew mean and bitter and deranged until, for lack of higher forms of spiritual comfort, entire families became morphine-crazed. They had, as well, invented a holiday called Thanksgiving, which Rub had only recently got news of, but from what she gathered its features to be, she found it to contain the mark of a tainted culture. To be thankful on just the one day.'

kimi · 21/11/2007 20:56

What a lovely thread.

I am thankful for my two beautiful sons.

I am thankful that they love me even though I shout.

I am thankful for my wonderful DH who loved me enough to let me leave and is still my best friend even though I do not deserve his love and loyalty.

I am thankful that me lovely sister is winning her fight with the cancer that turned her life upside down.

I am thankful for my mother, who has fought so hard to overcome so much illness, but will always be there for me.

I am thankful for my friends in real life who give me so much pleasure, and try to understand my mad life.

I am thankful for New DP who dose his best to understand me, tells me I can be anything I want to be and looks inside to find the real me.

I am thankful for the posters on MN who have taught me life is not black and white and I need to stop judging myself.

I am thankful my children have parents who love them, are safe in their beds tonight, have full tummies, are warm and do not live in fear of abuse or worry where the next meal is coming from.

I am thankful that I am blessed.

hana · 21/11/2007 21:04

OverRated, I am Canadian, thus the wink!

OverRated · 21/11/2007 22:49

Hana, I didn't realise

Ok, not good at big, mushy lists, but am in my typical pre-Thanksgiving euphoria (it was my favorite holidays pre-kids), so here goes:

I am thankful that oh so many years ago DH took a chance on a miserable, depressed someone who had totally given up on everything woman and married her, standing by her after all of her "friends" and family abandoned her, giving her a life that she still can't believe she's living to this day. And even more so that he's so involved in his children's lives and makes a wonderful dad.

I am thankful for my healthy, happy DS and DD and for the fact that even though I never thought I wanted to, I get the privilege of being a SAHM and enjoying every day I have with them.

I am thankful for my in-laws who have shown me nothing but love and support and stand by me for who I am, and accept me.

I am thankful for my house. I know it is dumb, but it has lots of windows and is light and bright, and has such a good feeling to it. I love being in it on cold days listening to the rain and feeling so warm and happy.

I am thankful for my friends. Everything else would be enough, but they are the icing on the cake.

And because every serious list needs a frivolous item, I am thankful for cake, and pie and cookies and just about every other dessert. I have the worlds worst sweet tooth.
