Cant beleive I am asking this, suppose it's because me and dh are both scared of making a decision!!

basically he is working further away again. He got made redundant due to company closure in June. he then got offered what seemed like a great job but it is several counties away. it takes him 2 1/2 hrs min each way. It is killing us. Dh is constantly knackered, money is dwindling (due to petrol costs) and I just feel like I am bringing up the kids on my own His boss is a complete arse, and without going into too much detail, my husband has found out that boss has been slagging him off behind his back to other staff members that my dh is in charge of

dh has been offered another job (also in the same county as this one!) It would mean we would have to move but it is a very good job, not as senior but good prospects, a good pension scheme, relocation money and basically it would sort him for the forseeable future. They are going to send him a written contract mid november. They dont want him tostart until january by the look of things.

So dh wants to give up this job he has and take the rest of the year off. We have redundancy cover on everything. My Mum seems to think we wouldnt qualify for the cover though as he would make himself out of job. Is this true?? She thinks we wouldnt get benefits either. I think this is ridiculous because he is basically working for next to nothing atm and surely the benefits office dont expect you to work hundreds of miles away? Does anyone know if we can claim?

and would you all take the risk of having a couple of months off. basically in that time we could get our house ready and up for sale and dh could still carry on looking for a job round here (and hopefully get one!) Please help, I feel really mixed about this

If your husband gives up his job, he will not qualify under his redundancy package. He would not be eligible for benefits either, for the first 6 months.

I wouldn't give up the job until he has at least seen the contract for the new job. Also, with Christmas approaching, do you really want to lose your sole source of income?

oh bugger if he got the sack would we get redundancy cover?

his contract is only temporary atm, does that make any difference?

yes congrats on new job> Agree with the others on benefits etc BUT does he have any holiday entitlements that he could use up and might he get a dose of flu or something at this time of year???

fio2 · 04/11/2004 07:55

he has just been off for the last week with a viral infection but tbh I think it was exhaustion, he looks so ill. it is frightening me

OP posts:
pixiefish · 04/11/2004 08:05

perhaps a touch of a bad back then???

fio2 · 04/11/2004 08:11

oh gawd i dont know

i cant beleive you have to wait 6 months to sign on. What on earth are you suppossed to do in the meantime??! apart from look for a job of course

OP posts:
hercules · 04/11/2004 08:37

You cant claim if you willingly leave your job as benefits are foe people who cant find work.

hercules · 04/11/2004 08:39

pixiefish

pixiefish · 04/11/2004 08:40

but hercules- I thought I'd read somewhere that fio2's dh had a bad back???? Didn't I??? must have been someone else then.... of course you can't do that fio2

fio2 · 04/11/2004 09:24

but hercules he cant find work in close proximity to our home, surely that would count?

OP posts:
fio2 · 04/11/2004 09:25

he is not leaving because of a bad back! just want to clear that up. What if he gets the sack? what would happen then?

So long as you are absolutely sure of the new contract in Jan, is there anything temporary locally that you get by on until then. perhaps driving for tesco, or shop work- anything like that. perhaps a xmas job? 2 1/2 hours travelling is bad! Don't know if that would meet your committments though.

fio2 · 04/11/2004 09:34

well hopefully he could get a labouring job or something locally and I could work too then, at the moment I cant work because he is never here and it would cost too much to pay someone to look after my children because my daughter is severely disabled and would need alot of care after she finishes school, if that makes any sense whatsoever

getting the sack is not the same as being made redundant so your policy might not cover it

could he possibly ... ask company to send written contract ASAP (congratulations by the way) and get a job to tide you over that's nearby .. maybe something not in his field .. how about retail for over christmas (they're always looking for extra christmas staff) .. as long as you can cover monthly expenses will it matter if things are tight if he's sane

don't know if that helps but its an option

fio2 · 04/11/2004 09:40

no thats what I think twiglett. Oh lord i hate being an adult and my husband seems so disillusioned atm

I am so wound up by this all, so sorry if it seems like I am snapping. i am not meaning to. i appreciate the help

OP posts:
fio2 · 04/11/2004 09:41

just another question.

He got made redundant in June and has took on this 3 month 'temporary' contract. if he leaves at the end of the contract is that making him self unemployed or not? and if his boss asks him to leave at the end of the contract does that mean he has been given the sack?

OP posts:
fio2 · 04/11/2004 09:42

it was the end of July, he got made redundant not June! he got told in June! my brain is mush today

so the redundancy cover wouldnt count?! what is the point of having it, it is useless! and you wouldnt get benefits either? it really is pants. We have never ever claimed before thats why i havent got a clue what I am talking about!
