God,I dont think Im a prude but the kids and I (age 9 and 4) were watching ITV at 8pm when an advert for 'News of the World' came on featuring a naked picture of Chantelle (BB) covering her tits with her hands.

Both kids (boys) started laughing and saying 'she's naked!!! hee hee, why is she naked mum? why are they showing a naked picture of that girl mum?' Now, Im usually very chilled and relaxed about most things, but im actually pissed off that i had to try and answer my kids questions about this.

Why were they showing those kinds of ads at 8pm on a sat night?

Am I being a prude?

No, not at all. I have radio 4 on all the time in the kitchen and when the DDs and I were making some cookies this afternoon, there was some programme on (think with Sandi Toksvig) where there was quite a bit of swearing - "wanker" was being bandied about, with a lot of laughing. But pointless to complain to Radio 4, we've tried (we complained about hearing the word "fuck" on an afternoon programme), and all we got was a smug reply saying that there's no watershed on radio and they can do what they like - basically, up yours, fuck you!

southeastastra · 17/11/2007 21:17

complain to radio 4? i would think they'd probably use your letter for a future satire

fireflyfairy2 · 17/11/2007 21:19

I agree with you, but think if she had her hands over her tits then there's actually very little they will do.

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 17/11/2007 21:35

i suppose it's just really hit home for the first time how powerful the media is in shaping my boys' view of women no matter how hard i try and instill a sense of equality.

I would have really mad. Why does she merit a news report anyway? Didn't a bunch of people die in cyclones? Isn't there global warming to discuss? The only thing I do when stuff like that comes up is I do explain to my kids why I object to the image or whatever and it can get some good discussions going.

pinkteddy · 17/11/2007 22:37

No you're not being a prude, totally unacceptable IMO. Surely that's what the 9pm watershed is all about? I'd complain to ITV and how about the advertising standards authority? advertising standards

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/11/2007 22:42

See, now my DD (4.5) didnt notice the naked lady......

That doesnt answer your question, but I think its interesting.

hunkermunker · 17/11/2007 22:43

Nor did DS1, VVV!

I saw the ad, and just thought "oh give it a rest, you wannabe thickie".

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/11/2007 22:45

LOL

I must spend too much time walking about naked

Or, maybe it's the 'extended' b/feeding

PaperChain · 17/11/2007 22:45

I am with you too Gertie

fireflyfairy2 · 17/11/2007 22:46

But, really they could argue that if you went to a beach on a hot day the children would see a bit more if a woman was topless?

I'm sure on a beach they don't cover their nipples with their hands.

I do have to agree though that she isn't newsworthy... but then it's the NOTW, when do they care if it's newsworthy or not, they're greedy for scandal!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/11/2007 22:46

Oh, I told DH last night, what I did when I got into bed on the eve of our wedding.

He PHSL

TinyGang · 17/11/2007 22:56

I agree too. I'm not a prude about much, (god what's the point anymore?) but anything that impacts on children is another matter.

I complained to C4 years ago because an ad for a teen programme on a Sunday morning was very graphic just as my dd walked into the room.

I got an over-friendly first name matey, 'right-on' reply which basically said f-off if I didn't like it or get down wiv the yoof.

hunkermunker · 17/11/2007 22:57

I had to think then, VVV - but now I'm PMSL too!

PaperChain · 17/11/2007 22:59

share with us all VVV?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/11/2007 23:02

I err... have a strange habit when I get into bed.

It involves brushing the bed sheet of any crumbs that may be there.

To do it in front of someone you dont usually share a bed with is bad enough in itself. But to chastise yourself on the pretext that you neednt have done it because the bedsheets had only just been put on is even weirder .

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/11/2007 23:03

Coupled with a look of puzzlement and a "er what are you doing?" made it even more embarrassing

PaperChain · 17/11/2007 23:04

oh lol!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/11/2007 23:05

I'm sure hunker will share a bed with me again though

hunkermunker · 17/11/2007 23:27

Er, yes, looking forward to it, VVV

I had utterly forgotten your mad crumb wiping - do you eat much toast in bed?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 17/11/2007 23:30

Nope

But DH occasionally eats biscuits......

lljkk · 19/11/2007 10:24

Er, it's just an ordinary naked body. Is that so shameful or shocking, not like she was actually doing something with the body. Even your boys just found it merely funny to see, because they know it's highly embarrassing for adults to show it all off to the world.
