Bought some today as i remembered watching 'you are what you eat' and these and sunflower seeds were recommended. But what was it about them? what do they do? can't remember now.

Good zinc content I think. Great for skin and immune system.

zebra · 02/11/2004 19:46

This might help ... very good for the prostate, apparently

alterego · 02/11/2004 20:19

.... I de-seeded our Hallowe'en pumpkin at the weekend and knew that pumpkin seeds had been extolled on "You are what you eat". But they just didn't look appetising so I threw them away If only I'd waited until reading this - then I would have known to roast them.

JiminyCricket · 02/11/2004 20:24

Munchy Seeds! Get pumpkin, sunflower and sesame seeds, mix in a little marmite and boiling water (just enough to dampen them and spread the flavour through) then toast for 5 - 10 mins (until dry) They are gorgeous. Lakeland sell something similar ready made.

WigWamBam · 02/11/2004 20:25

Marmite?

That's put a nasty taste in my mouth (yuk)

subs · 02/11/2004 20:47

i been putting them in salads and on casseroles - with sunflower seeds, toasted pine nuts and sesame seeds.... yummy - and those sprouted beans as well - i so easily persuaded...

Kayleigh · 02/11/2004 20:48

Marmite. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

doziduck · 02/11/2004 22:29

didn't know i was supposed to roast them, i've just been troughing them straight from the bag

Libido, it will be a miracle if pumpkin seeds give me any kind of libido..i'll let you know, i intend to eat some every day and along with my fish oils and agnus castus (for the terrible pmt) I should be a whole new woman

I was wondering about planting ours (after DD1's succesful sunflower). Do I dry them out and plant in the spring?? Have never done anything more complicated than bedding plants before!

KateandtheGirls · 03/11/2004 12:04

Doziduck, I would guess that the ones in the bag have already been roasted?

Pidge · 03/11/2004 12:24

If you want to roast the ones you get out of a pumpkin do you need to dry them out first? And how do you get all the pumkin innards off the seeds - do you wash them? And roughly how long do they take to roast?

I bet they'd be lovely roasted with a sprinkling of soy-sauce. For those of us who aren't marmite freaks! We used to do this with cashew nuts and they are yumsome.

SofiaAmes · 03/11/2004 21:22

Ok here's a true american's super duper pumpkin seed roasting recipe. Take the seeds out of the pumpkin and hand clean off the gook. Put them in a collander and give them a good rinsing to take last little bits off. Then put them still wet onto a baking sheet or pan large enough that they are not piled on top of each other. Salt them well (salt sticks because they are wet!). Put under grill until toasted on one side, turn them over and toast on other side. Grilling takes about 10 min. or so. It's a bit like doing toast, you really have to watch carefully or they go from golden to burnt in 10 secs. And then eat. We eat them whole shells and all.

carla · 03/11/2004 21:41

dd1's teacher... bless her .. brought today on our day out, a bowl of something truly delicious. Pan (dry) some sesame seeds, no oil, til they'e toasted. Then add some (and this was new to me Tamari in with the toasted sunflower seeds. And then she mixed some raisins in with all. None of the other parents could resist it. Have a go!

KateandtheGirls · 04/11/2004 00:46

Carla, that sounds very like something my dad does, except he uses hulled sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds as well as pine nuts, and then adds the soy sauce as soon as they come off the heat. My kids LOVE them.

Pidge · 04/11/2004 09:12

Yum, thanks SofiaAmes!

carla · 04/11/2004 09:18

Ooops KATG! I must be dreaming - I meant to say sunflower seeds

sis · 04/11/2004 19:48

Does anyone know where you can get unhulled pumpkin seeds? I like the crunch of the shell but the shops only seem to sell hulled seeds!

SofiaAmes · 05/11/2004 00:54

out of a pumpkin....
Have you tried Little India in wembley? A lot of the stores seem to have all sorts of seeds for sale.

hana · 05/11/2004 00:58

try tescos for crunchy pumpkin seeds

sis · 05/11/2004 10:27

Sofia, but there is only so much pumkin a girl can eat! I live very close to lots of Indian shops but they don't have any pumpkin seeds with the crunch attached.

Thanks, Hana, I will try a tesco.

ZolaPola · 05/11/2004 10:35

Think Holland & Barratt also do them, or most healthfood shops - GNC etc
