Am driving to Southampton on Saturday for first time. Need to go to John Lewis so am hoping to park at West Quay. Does it get very full, will I find a space easily (am very very bad at parking). Aim to arrive between 11 and 11:30am. Any advice gratefully received [hgrin].

HOw long are you going to be? There is free 2 hour parking in the local area. Is infront of mothercare/boots etc superstores and a 2 minute walk from JL. Also all open air and nice size spaces.

If it is full West Quay is fine, although very big so make sure you remember where you have parked.

I have a nursery advisory appt thing, where i meet someone at JL who tries to talk me into buying all their stuff... Imagine I will be a couple of hours in total once I have had a wander round. Never been to Southampton before , and live in Winchester now so want to get a feel for it. Presume the free parking goes quickly tho does it? Do you know what road that is, so I can stick it into my sat nav so I don't get lost .

Thanks for your help, thought i was going unanswered...

here is a map i got for you. West Quay retail park. Is literally across the road from JL, they have lifts directly into store for you.

Love Winchester btw THat is where i am having baby. Am due end of Dec, when are you due?

Piggy · 01/11/2007 13:44

I would suggest you get there half an hour early, park at West Quay and have a hot chocolate in the restaurant. You'll need all your energy for what will be a massive shopping trip!

MamaMaiasaura · 01/11/2007 13:47

hmm JL cafe is lovely and cream tea's there are yummy. If you are going to be mjore than 2 hours park in West Quay itself. Only gets really busy there weekends and school hols.

Egg · 01/11/2007 14:43

Ah thanks, you are both very lovely. I will, very likely, go for a nice hot choc. Awen if you are a couple of weeks late I might see you in hospital! I am due 2 Feb but with twins, so they will undoubtedly be a bit early, but hopefully not in December!

I saw your bump on your profile, it's fab. I need a new pic of mine. Did you have your first DC at Winchester too? Sorry, being very nosey .

not too far then. I'd best go and get ds from school and get my lazy bum off of mnet!

Egg · 01/11/2007 16:53

Thanks for all help re parking etc. Looking forward to a shopping trip without DS (or DH!). Is Southampton nice? We are so close but having been here about 10 weeks I have yet to go.

Awen Mr Heard is my consultant too . I am seeing him next Thursday after my next scan. Have only met him briefly. Am pleased you are going back again to same hospital as means it can't be too bad! I had DS at chelsea & westminster but we are much too far away now.

Twins are boy and girl they think. Will have a proper check next week just to be sure. Mr Heard does not like people finding out the sex apparently tho.

Well if any of you are around on Saturday I will be the one with the belly sitting sipping copious amounts of hot choc (and probably eating cake) in JL restaurant about 11am, and again about 2pm before I head for home (will stretch out my trip for a few hours to enjoy the time alone).

yes i would definitley park for free outside mothercare world / argos etc and all 'those shops'

it is as otherh have said literally across the road from John Lewis... you cross over the road and go directly into the john lewis back entrance type thing! and its free!!!

MamaMaiasaura · 01/11/2007 20:22

DIdnt realise you were shopping on a Saturday. Definately get there earlier as been getting very busy in town of late.

Mr Heard doesnt like you finding out but if you ask the sonographer they tell you anyway

Dont know wether to strop at cod now as southampton born and bred here for a fair few generations. Also afaik southampton is classed as the city with the most green spaces. THe common is absolutely fantastic for the kids, have hawthorn centre there etc. Actually there is alot of kids int eh area in general if you want any pointers.

That is because most of it got bombed in the war. There are a few nice buildings left but most of it got flattened and alot of people died. That is why they dont build on the parks in the city as was air raid shelt that got hit. My grandmother luckily didnt get in as it was full.

It hasnt got the archtectural beauty of winchester in terms of the ancient buildings admittedly but it still has alot of the old walls and there is alot to see and do imo. So there
