Help what coat is your 3 yr old wearing?

Help, my dd has had pneumonia and has a susceptibility to get it again so I'm paranoid about warmth! But she wont wear her winter coat! I'm thinking of a fleece jacket and a ski jacket as I thought they were light weight - not cheap at all the ones I'm looking at and there in the region of 100 quid for both. Am I over-reacting? Am I loony? She may not even like the damn coat. But , most of the kids coats I've seen just look like fashion coats and not proper winter kit. (I sound like my grandma..) What coats are your 3 year olds wearing? Can I get away with sewing Dora the Explora patches on her ski Jacket?

My 3yo is wearing a warm coat from mountain warehouse. Was a bargain in sale at £12 plus matching snow thingy dungarees (both fleece lined)

I would go for something like that rather than a "fashion coat" TBH

If you let her choose it with you, she may be more likely to accept it!

Go to a shop like Mountain Warehouse, theres loads

IdrisTheDragon · 24/10/2007 12:11

DS will be 4 next month and has a duffle coat from Woolies. Cost about £12 I think and keeps him lovely and warm (when he wears it of course....)

Bellie · 24/10/2007 12:14

dd is wearing a fleece or her duffle coat from woolies. The fleece cost 10.99 and the duffle coat about 12 in the sale.
She has also got a fifi hat and scarf - which we always start out wearing and I then end up carrying!

witchandchips · 24/10/2007 12:15

My son has a v thick cardie/jacket and a gillet. Worn with hat and scarf it seems to keep him warm without harming is ability to be manic boy outside

Anna8888 · 24/10/2007 12:17

I'm paranoid about my three year old's warmth too, as we walk to school and back every day, she plays outside at school and we do most of our shopping on foot (with buggy or scooter for her).

I bought a "proper" navy blue double breasted (so double warmth on her chest and neck) and padded pea coat for 150 euros. I bought a size 6 year old, though, and it's supposed to last...

tarantula · 24/10/2007 12:21

I tend to go for layers so rather than one thick coat I'd go for vest, shortsleeve and long sleeve tshirts, jumper, fleece or wooly jumper and then a windproof. Mind you it rarely gets so cold in London that she needs to wear all of those. Waterproof dungarees are also great for keepign them warm We got ours from tchibo. TKMax is great for fleeces and ski jackets too.

Washersaurus · 24/10/2007 12:27

DS1 wears a beautiful handmade fleece jacket, with car print fabric lining, and applique cars on front and back with colourful car buttons on the front . (took me months to make the bloody thing so he WILL wear it, damn it!

Seriously, I am more a fan of layering, with a long-sleeve vest under the clothes, rather than a big thermal type coat.

Anna8888 · 24/10/2007 12:37

Washersaurus - except the layer thing falls down when they go to school IME. School insists on one coat and minimal accessories because otherwise it takes them all morning to get the children undressed/dressed to go the park/undressed again/dressed to go home.

rebelmum1 · 24/10/2007 12:38

Cheers everybody, she already has base layers I thought I'd go for layers but she wont wear the wind-proof layer - which one do you have? I tried the choosing the own coat thing and we have a white skimpy coat with perfect angel written on the front.. I might just staple her into a ski jacket... and stamp dora on it.

Thanks anna that's true everyone else has just one coat at nursery and it's double trouble trying to get her into two coats for them and me.

DD1 (2.9) is wearing a fuschia pink duffle coat with padded lining from tk maxx for 16quid. she helped choose it so does keep it on.

nailpolish · 24/10/2007 12:43

wrapping your child up wont protect them from viral infections such as the cold or influenza

they are airborne and are passed through touch or coughing/sneezing

if you are on a budget i recommend
this coat i have one for my 3 yr old and one for my 5 yr old. very warm and a bargain too!

Anna8888 · 24/10/2007 12:43

rebelmum1 - we have windproof and rainproof jackets from Napapijri - they are great and the children love them - in fact, we had to break our cardinal rule of not dressing all the children the same because the boys fell in love with my daughter's Napapijri jacket and insisted we bought them identical ones.

My daughter has navy blue (school rules) but it comes in pink

nailpolish · 24/10/2007 12:46

i bought these coats i linked because the school insist on brown coats. dd1 was happy though becuase the llining is pink. and it has fab pockets (large and fasten) and a big name tag on the inside

hth

rebelmum1 · 24/10/2007 13:03

Thanks nailpolish agree it's not ultimate protection but if you already have a cold and also have a weak chest (damaged by pneumonia), damp, drafty and cold conditions exacerberate the problem. Believe me I know.

Nailpolish that coat is a tenner i'm astonished! I'm about to spend 100 quid. It's a combined inner and outer so should be warm... are my eyes deceiving me?? I don't mind spending money if it will do the job but I don't want to spend money if it's unecessary. Is it warm? i can stick her in thermals too if needs be.

dd2 is wearing a gap parka, similar to this but in brown

down inside, fur on hood, but you can take thhat off

really snug, has cuffs round the sleeves to keep chill out

£39 BUT dd1 wore it before so have had moneys worth

rebelmum1 · 24/10/2007 13:15

The only downside is the despatch time 19th November ..

OP posts:
nailpolish · 24/10/2007 13:25

yes a tenner isnt it great! dd1 wears it to school with her shirt and cardigan underneath and shes v cosy. she usually has a scarf on too. the hood is snug to keep ears warm. fleece lining all over, with soft elasticated wrists

i fidn the vertbaudet catalogue has lots of bargains like that

i bought the dds one each mainly as 'spares' but they wear them a lot

if you dont like it you can always send it back

MrsMills · 24/10/2007 13:26

DS2 is wearing this. It is also available in brown and pink. Don't know if you have a shop near to you though. But I can highly recommend it for keeping her warm and dry.

TellusMater · 24/10/2007 13:33

DD has an OshKosh jacket from TKMaxx. Warm and waterproof. Bargain.

EachPeachPearMum · 24/10/2007 22:02

Hi nailpoilish- I looked at that vertbaudet coat previously for my dd. Is it really toasty? Am worried because I feel the cold terribly, and I think she is going to be the same. Was tempted by the gap ones but 40gbp put me off a little!

DelGirl · 24/10/2007 22:07

I've seen a couple of nice ones in Matalan if you have one near you and they're only £10. I was tempted to get one for my dd but she has 2 coats already
