Help, my dd has had pneumonia and has a susceptibility to get it again so I'm paranoid about warmth! But she wont wear her winter coat! I'm thinking of a fleece jacket and a ski jacket as I thought they were light weight - not cheap at all the ones I'm looking at and there in the region of 100 quid for both. Am I over-reacting? Am I loony? She may not even like the damn coat. But , most of the kids coats I've seen just look like fashion coats and not proper winter kit. (I sound like my grandma..) What coats are your 3 year olds wearing? Can I get away with sewing Dora the Explora patches on her ski Jacket?

boden do v warm downfilled jackets - they only go to waist though, you might want one that goes past the bum - think next do 3/4 length ones

Have you looked on the little trekkers site? They have good outdoor gear that is not too expensive. There are a few things to think about:

  • windproof is warmest. You can get fleece jackets with windproof linings or just put a raincoat over the top. Any bog std fleece will do for one season, as long as you put a windproof and waterproof layer over the top.
  • more expensive jackets will also be breathable as well as waterproof. This stops your kids getting all sweaty.
  • those down jackets that Gap and Boden do are very warm (I've got one!). But they can be too warm sometimes, so the kids chuck them off. Also not guaranteed waterproof. A fleece layer is less likely to be removed (no guarantee though).
  • a ski jacket will be insulated, warm and windproof, and hopefully waterproof as well. But again not as flexible as layers. Beware some cheap coats appear to be insulated but not very well, so they are bulky and cold.
  • hats, gloves and scarves make a big difference! Knit a woolly hat and make her keep it on.
  • classic duffle style coats in wool are also warm but my DD won't wear hers (too itchy).
  • if your DD is like mine, then pink is usually a winner. Or in her case if her brother wore it first.

Have looked on ebay for the gap ones- they are currently going for 16-18 gbp in her size, so inc postage 20quid or more. Have a feeling its going to be really cold this winter though.
Taking it off wont be a problem- dd cant undo the zip on her coat yet (20 mo)

Dd2 has a cod ome, with a lovely flower lining, in ple pink, form Woolworths, of all places.

And she has another waterproof style one ofrm Next which is a bit big though.

Got a coat from TKmax in the end I needed something urgently, not what i wanted really as she needed to like it, so it's warm but pretty and ok for nursery running about a bit at break times. For home I have ordered a soft shell jacket and have an outer if really wet, as well as base-layers and thermal fleece just need some fleece trousers and waterproof trousers...

This is the jacket
Girls Softshell jacket

A great alternative to a heavy jacket. This Softshell jacket by Regatta is very warm with a water repellent and wind resistent finish. Perfect for many outdoor activities including horse riding etc as the jacket is less bulky than normal outdoor wear. It is also very soft and comfortable to wear
