Because anything that isn't grocery shopping is miles away from the house, and it isn't practical/cost effective to make several trips getting what I need during the week and DH needs on the weekend. That and my child doesn't hate it, he loves large areas with lots of people he can jabber away to, and DH doesn't mind going at all.

kateandthegirls

they have stopped allowing people to smoke in the shopping cnetres in this town, except one cafe upstairs.

i take my kids shopping on a saturday if i've been too busy during the week. they both love shopping, maybes it because we always stop for a cup of tea/juice and a cake when we go out.

Well, I am never ever taking DS shopping ever again after what happened last week. When it was just him on his own it was great ... but since DD came along it never works ...
I was in desperate need for some clothes (wasn't a Saturday I have to add) ... took DS and DD, knew exactly which shops to go to for what I wanted, knew that an hour was the absolute limit for DD who can't bear to be still in her buggy.
It all started so well. DS entertained DD outside the changing room in one shop while I did a Superman impression and tried on 3 pairs of trousers and 4 tops in 30 seconds. Bought one of each and then dashed out to the next shop. That one wasn't too bad but DS decided to push DD around the shop and got her buggy trapped under a clothes rail. So she is tugging all the clothes down on top of her and he is shouting "Mum, mum, DD is stuck!!" at the top of his voice just as I was in my bra and knickers and was struggling into a pair of jeans far too small ...
The third and last shop was a disaster ... I found a cubicle big enough to fit the buggy in and told DS to wait outside it. So I am getting undressed, singing "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" at the top of my voice like a prat to DD to keep her amused while DS does commando crawls under the door into the cubicle and back again. He was being quiet and amusing himself so I ignored him. Finally he comes under the door for the 4th time, kneels up next to me just as I am taking off a pair of trousers, puts both hands on the top of my legs, wobbles my thighs shouting, "Ooooooh, what lovely big fat wobbly thighs you have Mummy!!!"

I died inside when I heard sniggers on the other side of the cubicle door!!
The whole trip was about 40 minutes long and I have vowed never ever to go clothes shopping with children again!!!

captainCOD · 24/10/2004 10:13

caligula what you said about old pople needing someone to talk to was also true for me when a sahm wiht ds1!!

ScummyMummy · 24/10/2004 10:19

Oh Ghosty- what a trip, honey!

Enid- ditto. We usually have a lovely time.

motherinferior · 24/10/2004 11:01

DD1 has been trained - took a while, I must say - to enjoy clothes shopping with me, and indeed says hopefully, 'aren't you going to try something on', or 'hey, groovy boots, mum'

Shopping with her dad, however...

Ghosty, lol, - that reminds me of the last time (and I mean the LAST time) I took ds2 in a changing room with me (Next) to try on a top.

"Ooooh Mummy...BIG NIPPLES!"

He couldn't even see them - he meant my boobs!

iota · 24/10/2004 13:08

my family love shopping -they inherited the shopping gene from their father.

We often go on a Saturday - undercover and safe, so ds2 (3) can walk/run freely and I can put my shopping in the buggy instead of having to buy an old lady shopping trolly like MissusWoman has.

We go to all the boy stuff like Game, the Legos shop, HMV, the Disney dhop, the entertainer, Woolies toy section.

We stop and have lunch out somewhre exotic like Pizza Hut and try to civilise the boys a little.

If I want anything for me like clothes etc, I go on my own in the week when ds1 and 2 are in school and nursery.

iota · 24/10/2004 13:09

and the boys spend their pocket money, so it's educational as well

SofiaAmes · 24/10/2004 20:52

I remember one embarrassing saturday morning when my ds (age 2.5 or so at the time) went running through Conran's shouting Mummy let's go see the FAGGOTS. I had just told him we were going to see the FABRICS, but he wasn't pronouncing things too clearly back then....
