Contraception - anyone had the implant/injection instead of taking the pill?

I have been given the pill Femulen today off my doctor, which she says to try for 3 months and then if it agrees with me to go for either an implant or an injection. Don't know any friends that have had these so am looking for pros and cons please.

Do NOT want anymore children thank you very much, but don't want to go the sterilisation route and dh is a bit squeamish on the snip.

im on the injection. I havent had a period for over 5 months now. I like being on it. It doesnt suit everyone though. A lot of people experience irregular spotting while on it.

spacemonkey · 20/10/2004 14:26

i recommend the mirena coil!

hoxtonchick · 20/10/2004 14:26

how about a mirena coil oliveoil? i'd never heard of them before mumsnet, but lots of people seem to use them happily.

hoxtonchick · 20/10/2004 14:27

spooky, sm we posted at exactly the same time!

spacemonkey · 20/10/2004 14:28

I had the depo provera injection after ds.

It was good because I could totally forget about contraception and with a newborn, that was just as well.

But I did get really frequent spotting which was just rubbish and inconvenient and messy enough to interfere with sex - grrr. Changed to oral mini pill, still got spotting, but not as much, then back to combined pill when I stopped b/f.

hth.

popsycal · 20/10/2004 14:38

i ahd the injection

screwed up my hormones and took nearly 2 years to conceive after coming off it

there was a thread about depo provera injection a while ago

worth a search

oliveoil · 20/10/2004 14:41

hmmmm, see I had my doubts about the injection, seems a bit permanent, ditto the inplant thing.

I don't want anymore children but I am not keep on being hormonally all over the show.

Not sure on the coil, don't fancy the idea of something being fitted internally.

The newborn is currently doing a good job of contraception herself, wailing at inappropriate moments .

Know what you mean about not liking the idea of the coil OO, but it really is hassle free contraception, the hormone level is much lower than with the pill so no side effects and it makes your periods virtually disappear after a few months!

oliveoil · 20/10/2004 14:45

How big is it? I envisage some medieval torture style thing!

How long do you have it fitted for, ie do you have to have new ones fitted monthly or whatever?

Should maybe have asked my doc this

OP posts:
spacemonkey · 20/10/2004 14:46

it's much smaller than you might imagine, and once fitted you keep it in for 5 years (unless you want to ttc that is, in which case you have it removed and you're fertile again virtually straight away)

oliveoil · 20/10/2004 14:50

Hmmmmm, may consider it but still not 100%, the pill sounds easy, just pop each day.

I started a thread on this recently - I can't take combined pill, and wouldn't remember to take mini-pill at the right time, and also hate the thought of a coil (illogical I know). I have done quite a bit of research on Implanon, and decided to go for it - If you do get a bad reaction it can be removed immediately (unlike depo, where you would be stuck with the effect for 12 weeks) and as I've not had problems with hormone based contraception before it would be unlikely to happen with implanon.

Wallace · 20/10/2004 22:17

I have just started using the contraceptive patch (hopeless at remembering to take pills). Felt a bit sicky at first, but okay now. Each patch is on for a week. After 3 weeks you have a patch free week.

shalom · 20/10/2004 22:22

my friend had the injection and it took her nearly three years to concieve. shes got a patch now but there have been stories about pple dying and getting paralysed from that -i warned her about that as well.-Personally i have the coil fitted and you just have to forget abot contraception and you don't have to worry about any type of chemicals going in your body--or better still abstience is the best type of contraception!!!

Fran1 · 20/10/2004 22:46

the injection works for me

have used it for at least 5 years now i think (before and after pg) i must admit i love it don't suffer too bad with spotting and love not having periods!!! Before i went back on it after having dd i had about 3 periods and couldn't cope.

The only possible downside for me is my weight is hard to control, but that could also be due to overeating, having a child and getting old!! i just prefer the injection excuse

I was aware of the length of time it can take to conceive so i came off it, expecting to take at least a year to get pg, and i got pg that very next month!

Probably no help to you, but i think these threads just prove how different things suit different bodies!!

miam · 20/10/2004 22:54

Had the injection and it was the only thing that stopped me getting pregnant - and after the initial spotting for the first 8 wks, no periods to boot! Except.... put on lots of weight (boo hoo) so had to stop it, and got pregnant almost straight away grrrr. Tried the implant but again put on weight, although they tried to persuade me it wasnt the implant causing weight gain. It was awful getting it removed - it had moved and they couldn't find it!!! But it worked - didn't get pregnant and had no periods either. Got pregnant again within months of having it removed grrrrrrrrr!!

MarmaladeSun · 21/10/2004 16:07

I had the injection and have regretted it ever since. I put on 2 and a half stone in 2 months, despite being on a diet and going to the gym. I still can't shift it now. I wouldn't have it again under any circumstances.

dmo · 10/05/2007 21:54

had the injection for 10 yrs found it fab but doc said i had to change so got the inplant put in last night but fainted twice at health centre, been fine tonight till i took the banage off and fainted again
did antbody else feel like this? still feel abit sick but in bed with feet up on laptop

EllieKthePA · 10/05/2007 21:59

i had the injection but they wouldn't let me stay on it for more than 2 years as i was under 25. now i've had ds2 i have to start looking at contraception again so i'll be watching this with interest!

Rubystar77 · 10/05/2007 23:31

i had 2 shots of it, had no periods for 2 years, basically tried for baby for 4 years had to have fertility treatment for dd1 and by miracle got preg with dd2 3 months later. i blame the shots of depro for not ovulating all that time, am now on yasmin pill, its really good, no side effects, and am 1 stone lighter than normal weight, dd2 is 5 months.
i personally don't agree with shot, made me very moody, fat and not a very nice person....

dmo · 11/05/2007 07:31

i've already got 2 dc's so dont want any more but also we dont want to do anything permitate as i'm only 31

ProfYaffle · 11/05/2007 07:52

I've just had the implant, only 2 or 3 weeks ago but no problems so far other than I've got a period On the mini pill I didn't get one for a year or so. A couple of my cousins have it for months now without any problems.

It works for me because I can still bf dd2, don't have to worry about forgetting to take the mini pill and can leave it in place til dh has the snip (long waiting list here)

Twinmummyx2 · 12/05/2007 08:57

I had the injection years ago..it was great no periods for the whole time i was on it and no side-effects at all!
