Grape Warning! Please read!

I just bumped into a friend who I haven't seen since before the Summer holidays. She has a ds the same age as ds2 - almost 3. Over the summer he choked on a grape (was wolfing them down, like they do). She tried everything to shift it and, realising it wasn't budging, called an ambulance - he was turning blue and almost unconscious by the time it came. He's fine now - but I thought I would pass on the warning.

She asked me "do you cut grapes in half?" and - smug Mum that I am - I said yes. I always do: I read somewhere that grapes and cherry tomatoes are a choking hazard. But I reckon if she didn't know - then it's worth passing on.

Did cross my mind that if one was to pinch grapes in a supermarket one should carry a knife in order to cut them in half first - and that could be construed as going with intent to steal But we won't go there again, eh?

Oh bloody hell I did sort of know that...but cherry tomatoes too? HELL!!

popsycal · 14/10/2004 14:31

when my ds's were little I not only cut them in half, but peeled them as well.

whimsy · 14/10/2004 14:34

Im a bit worried about giving DS grapes. Last year a little girl died in the west midlands, after choking on 3 grapes. Nan managed to get 1 grape out as did abulance man with the 2nd but she died in the end. I'm sure she was only 18mths

jampot · 14/10/2004 14:37

i also heard a similar story about cherry tomatoes my son loves both grapes and cherry toms and although he is 8 I do still worry

OldieMum · 14/10/2004 14:37

DD fancied some cherry tomatoes for breakfast this morning (tomatoes are her favourite food). I gave her some whole ones and she spat out the skins of several, after biting into them. They could have been a choking hazard, I realise now. So thanks for the warning.

i have alwyas, and i do mean ALWAYS cut grapes for DD (or anything that looks a bit big and difficult to get a grip on with her teeth ) because my dear grandfather died by chocking on a grape. i'll never forget that. he had all sorts of illnesses and a grape killed him! as simple as that. my poor gradma couldn't save him unfortunatelly, they were on their own, he was quite a tall man, she was quite frail and couldn't do any proper first aid on him. i cringe everytime i go to birthday parties and children are being offered incut grapes and always make a point of telling the hostess they can be dangerous.

Branster · 14/10/2004 14:44

well, i actually used to peel the grapes for dd as well when she was little

whimsy · 14/10/2004 14:46

If I can remember rightly they gave her a little bowl with them in, and she just put too many in

marthamoo · 14/10/2004 14:46

That's really sad, branster And about the little girl who died - maybe that's when I registered that you should cut them in half, because I do remember that.

throckenholt · 14/10/2004 14:48

I cut them in half for my 1.75 year olds but not for my 3.25 year old - what age is safe to stop I wonder ?

golds · 14/10/2004 14:48

A friend of my sisters, her little boy who was 3 (same age as my ds - at the time) choked on a piece of apple, unfortunately she was unable to save him, he died before the ambulance arrived

throckenholt i don't think there is a safe age as such. as you can see from my posting
you'll just know when you can trust them
or buy softer ones if you can find them?

snmum · 14/10/2004 14:51

there was a little girl in stoke on trent last year who died choking on grapes

suzywong · 14/10/2004 14:52

too sad about the kids choking

there is a public information style ocmmercial on Australian tv at the moment about how vital it is to know what to do in the event of a choking child

Would it be inappropriate for me to tell the story of the mixup between the peeled halved black grapes I gave DS2 for breakfast and the surpising emegence of my mucus plus when I was 37 weeks pg with ds2?

bundle · 14/10/2004 14:52

about 8-10 do every year, mostly on things like grapes

bundle · 14/10/2004 14:53

yum yum suzywong, that's why we always buy green ones

suzywong · 14/10/2004 14:57

it was very shocking, it looked EXACTLY like a big black peeled grape but was warm. It came out as I was struggling to do up his shoes and he stood on it (will never never tell him that) and the strangest thing is I had pants on. DS2 didn't start coming out for another 2 and weeks

suzywong · 14/10/2004 15:09

attention seeking thread killer - moi?

marthamoo · 14/10/2004 15:29

Oh suzy, not the grape story again....

OP posts:
suzywong · 14/10/2004 15:32

only to get your attention my darling MM

seriously though, this is a very important issue

I wouldn't know what to do if I heard those tell tale choking sounds, would you?

and how come you never msn anymore, hmmmmm?

marthamoo · 14/10/2004 15:38

Whenever I log on there is no-one there! I shout into the ether at the top of my lungs and my voice just comes echoing back to me
